Diaper Help

I used Huggies on my first child(whom is now 7 years old). Anyway, since that's what I used with him, I've been using them on my daughter (whom will soon be 7 months). I have been using them on her and use the wipes to wipe her face after eating. Well, she's developed this rash that is almost chapped on her cheeks. And at times, she appears to be a little pink on her "girlie parts", but it's not diaper rash, it's just a pink tinge. Has anyone had problems with huggie diapers before? And if so, what did you switch to? I also use huggie soap, lotion and liquid powder on her and have no problems with that. Is it possible she's having a reaction to the wipes/diapers, or could it be something else?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I was finally able to switch my daughter over to Pampers diapers and their sensitive wipes last evening. Just overnight, everything cleared up. It's just weird how I used Huggies all these months and she over the last week just developed problems with that brand. So here's to hoping that Pampers remains ok for her. And thankyou to everyone for their advice. And to those of you who had the same problem with Huggies and switched to Pampers. Great job to everyone.

I tried a few diapers in the beginning with my daughter (now 18 months old). The only ones that did not give her a rash or anything was Luvs. Huggies leaked on her and others (expecially store brand) gave her a rash. I have heard that Luvs have worked on a lot of babies. Maybe try that?! Hope this helps.

Hi A.,

You know I had the same problem. My son who is now 9 yrs old was able to use huggies with no side effects at all..But when my daughter was about two weeks old I started to notice the same symptons with her.. So it tried Luvs and that seemed to make things worse. Then I tried Pampers and almost right away the redness was gone.I also used wipes to clean all body parts, and with the pampers brand there was no redness at all..

Hope I was able to help,

My daughter is only 6 weeks, but I know the pinkish tinge you're talking about. We use the Pampers Sensitive wipes, but found that if we used even them too much without drying her off afterwards, she'd get redish-pinish down there. We now keep a roll of soft toilet paper by the changing table to pat her off after the wipes, so that the moisture isn't trapped by the diaper when you put it on. It seems to do the trick. We've also used Boudreux's Butt Paste when it's been particularly reddish, and it works great! We also use the Pampers Swaddlers. They're great! No leaks, and there's no reaction. Are you using the right size? Before we moved up a size, she seemed to be a little bothered by her diapers, too. Now there is no problem!

I definitely agree with what everyone is saying about using the wipes on her face. I keep washcloths downstairs where we are at the majority of the time and after feedings or whatever, I put warm water on the washcloth and wipe them down. After every bath, before going outside, or if their skin seems dry, I put aquaphor on their faces and just baby lotion on their bodies. Babies have such sensitive skin and the chemicals in the wipes, the heat in the house, and the cold weather outside is probably really drying out her little face. If she looks like she has a rash and her cheeks aren't chapped, it could just be what she is eating. My kids get that and the pediatrician doesn't seem worried about it at all.
I currently am using huggies because I was given 2 huge boxes of stage 4 at one of my baby showers, but I only buy the pampers cruisers and when they could wear them I would buy the swaddlers. They were the only diapers that would work. I tried some of the cheaper ones and the store brands, but they would always leak out of them or with the CVS brand that someone suggested I try, the absorbent crystal stuff came out and got all over one of my sons and he had a huge rash afterwards. Both of my kids have very sensitive skin and so we use the unscented, sensitive skin wipes and the cruisers and we don't have any problems.

Cloth! lol, cleared everything right up Super easy to put on, extremely cute, soft and fluffy, good for the environment, and exrtemely easy on the wallet. I haven't had a problem since. Its come an extremely long way from flats and pins. Infact I dont even own flats pins and plastic pants. I own stuff like fitted organic velour diapers etc. But in all seriousness........not a single rash since, and i and my baby enjoy diapertime.

i doubt i can actually convince you to use cloth.....lots of moms are very phobic about what the think it will be like (which is unfounded) BUT here are some other things you can do.

Invest in good butt balms (triple paste is great but $$, also try earth mama angel baby butt balm, and burts bees) Invest in some disposable liners (many are made of rice paper) that you can put between the diaper and your baby's butt (creates another layer between the chemicals in the dipe and her butt) and avoid anything scented or does not say extra gentle hypoallergenic. But in all honesty i would say its a reaction to her wet diapers since she is fine with it everywhere else. Try changing her every 2 hrs and let her have naked time for a half hour a couple times a day.

I used huggies one time....and it seemed to when i changed my daughters diaper to leave a crystallize type substance on her bum....well i didnt like that so I went to using Pampers Crusiers and Pampers Swaddlers...i loved them i recommend them to any one...they dont leak or leave any type of substance on the skin...now for the wipes i never used wipes on the face...the slight fragrance could be breaking her out...use unsented wipes...pampers make unsented ones....and for her face use a wash rag and water or the kleenex wipes that are safe to use on her face....

I use huggies with my second and did with my first as well. They were super with both of my sensitive skin kids. Diapers do contain quite a few chemicals though including some bleach to make them white so she could have a reaction to them. Wipes contain alcohol and are terribly drying so her cheecks probably are chapped. I do use wipes for the convenience to wipe my little ones' faces when we are out, but I keep a pile of small baby wash cloths in the kitchen which we use at home with just plain water. With the colder weather and heat on, the air is drier to begin with and so your daughter's skin is just not able to keep up the moisture. You could use the same at home for diaper changes as well to see if that helps with the redness there. The other diaper area remedies that worked best for me were a few minutes of diaper free time and Aquaphor. It's pricy but worked immediately with just a little bit for me. Mine are not quite as sensitive to bath soaps and such so we are not as consistent with brand there. They have been ok with most any of them. When my first was born, I was given a bottle of "Tom's" baby shampoo. It is organic I think and smelled like honey. I know they have a whole line of baby items as well as adults. I've seen it at strange places sometimes - like I'm thinking they had it at Borders Books - go figure! It was really nice, but like I said, I've seen it at strange places and not always on regular shelf when I'm buying those items so I forget or am just lazy so go with regualr brands most of time. It's supposed to be good for sensitive skin though and not have extra chemicals in it. good luck

Oh my goodness, that is exactly what happened to me, I switched my daughter to pampers baby dry, and wipes are pampers fresh, and natrual. My daughter had a reaction to the alcohol in the wipes, dried her up too much...and i switched diapers because of the fact of the brand "Huggies"....I do not use huggies anything.

My daughter has a tinge like that when we use any Huggie diaper or soap (we use the wipes just fine)...
We use Wal-mart brand diapers, White Cloud. They work just as well as any name brand diaper I've used...

Also, could it happen to be that the symptoms come at the same time?? Like feeding her a particular food (the pink tinge)and then wiping her face afterwards without drying (causing the chapping cheeks)??

Just a couple thoughts, hope that helps!!

Huggies wipes, even the sensitive kind, make my daughter chapped. I can't speak for the diapers as they have always leaked on her so we don't use them anymore. We use Pampers or Target's generic brand (very similar to Pampers). Try different wipes, like Pampers in the WHITE box, (I think they are called extra sensitive) and see if things improve. That's probably the easiest thing to do first. If you are interested, I have a "recipe" for home-made wipes. They aren't any cheaper, but they don't have alcohol in them and you know exactly what is in them because you put it there!

Has the problem on her face just started? Perhaps it's that the weather turned cold and things are dry in the house -that could exacerbate the problem. Try some extra moisturizer if switching wipes doesn't help.

My pediatrician recommended not using any liquid powder but didn't specify why.

Best of luck,
K.

Hi A., I have 2 children that are older now, but when they were younger and using diapers, if I used baby wipes at each diaper change, they would develop an irritation similar to what you're describing. Have you changed the brand of wipes? Maybe she has sensitive skin and the wipes are irritating her and drying her skin out. Good luck, hopefully this helped.

I would stop the wipes and use soap and water until things clear up and notice if it comes back using a different brand of wipes.

Hello! I've found that Huggies are not good for babies with sensitive skin. The hospital I had my kids at always sent me home with Huggies and as soon as I would get home, the babies would get rashes. I use Luvs diapers now on both of my children and neither of them have a problem with redness or rashes. For wipes...I can't use anything but Pampers Sensitive Wipes, they are soft and wonderful on my kids faces and bottoms. I have a 21 month old daughter and I still can't use Huggies wipes on her for more than a few days or she starts to get red. Hope this helps and good luck!!!

hi there...

i am not sure if this will help in anyway,,, but when my daughter was in diapers, i tried huggies (she has semi sensitive skin) and she always had a reaction, and i also didnt like they way they seemed to bead up when they got full... i always used sensitive skin pampers wipes and never had a problem (except they are expensive, but its better then a rash) and i have been faithful to pampers diapers then pull ups every since.

anyway, hope it helps... also, i always put vasoline on her after every change, it is a great buffer and also seemed to prevent rashes.

I use Huggies on my son and won't use anything else. My mom babysits my son and 2 other girls (one uses Pampers and one uses Kirkland brand). We have found that if any of the babies wear a diaper other than their brand, they get a rash. My son gets a rash with Pampers and Kirkland, Taylor gets a rash with Huggies and Kirkland, and Mackenzie gets a rash with Huggies and Pampers. Its kind of odd! I am thinking of pull ups or potty training now, my son tries to take his diapers off ever chance he gets!

My kids have sensitive skin and their hineys would get red if I used Huggies. They would also get red if I used any store brand. It was strange but true!! I always use Luvs diapers or Pamapers Cruisers. I never had a problem with their wipes, just the diapers. You may be having problems with the wipes just because it is getting colder out but if that is not the case, I would start buying the sensitive wipes. Good Luck!

Hi A.,

I personally used Luvs, they were cheaper and worked great. Her cheeks may be a tad chapped, try using a bit of vasoline on them for a few days and see how that helps, and just use a warm wet washcloth to clean her up when u can. Her girlie parts should be a tad pink, on the insides but it could be a rash if it's on the 'lips', ya know. I used Ivory soap on my daughter and rinse well, it's pure. I don't think Huggies could be the culprit as she would have a much bigger rash if she was allergic. Check with your doctor on your next visit to be sure.

HI A.. I always used pampers or luvs...I tried huggies once on my oldest and she was red all over after the first diaper change! But I will admit that my oldest has super sensitive skin...I even had to use the diapers with the velcro instead of the tape (yeah, she's almost 17 now and those were a new thing then!) because the adhesive would bother her even though it wasn't touching her skin. I also always used baby magic soap, shampoo and lotions. Try another small package of diapers and see what happens! Best wishes and Merry Christmas!

If the wipes are scented, she could have an allergic reaction. Try the unscented hypoallergenic/natural huggies wipes. Also, try a different diaper. I used Luvs as they were a better fit for my little one. Have you put any Desitian or other ointment on her? If it doesn't go away, call the doctor. He can check it out--make sure it's not a yeast infection.

Hi A.,
My name is R.. And have been using Huggies now for both of my 2 younger kids..my daughter is 2 yrs old and my son is 8 months. My son at times will get a small rash along his belly where the diaper might rub and my doctor has suggested to use a different brand of diaper. My son has very sensitive skin where he gets real bad dry patches which we have to use a steroid cream on them. But I haen't changed his brand of diapers at this time b/z it comes and goes, and it doesn't seem to irrate him at all.

A little about me:
I'm 35 yrs old, married and stay at home mom w/ 2 small kids and 2 teenagers.

I also had that problem with my daughters (twins) and it developed into a fine red raw rash. The doctor told us the girls were allergic to the dye in the diapers. Are your diapers colored? When the girls were born all the disposable diapers were either pink or blue. We had to switch to a store brand that came in all white. Also dreft detergent and the wipes... NO WIPES at all... I had to use a towel and water... for those times we actually left the house I used bounty soaked in water and put them in a ziploc. We were also told to leave the diaper off for about 10 - 15 minutes every time the girls were changed. (only when possible of course).

Good luck to you, I know how hard it can be.
