Diaper Rash in 3 Week Old

I have a 3 week old son with horrible diaper rash on his bum. We are only using cotton and water to clean him (no wipes) and using A&D and Desitin at each change (these worked great with my daughter). We also dry his tush before applying. He is breast fed on demand so he has frequent stools and wet diapers. Any suggestions on how to clear this up on such a little guy?

organic rosehip seed oil. It's magic, hard to find though and you want a good quality. I get mine at norabloom.com

Hi T.,
I did breast feed to my daughter. She had diaper rash when she was 1 month old. I used to clean her with water and wash cloth. Also, try Destin/ A&d with zinc or Balmax that really works for diaper rash. After you put the ointment leave the baby's tushi to the open air. DO not put diaper on.YOu can use the blanket or waterprof pad to prevent from pee or poop. You can use diaper night time. But you will see the result in one day. Hope this is helpful to you.

My son had a bad diaper rash at a week and a half that I could not get rid of. What finally worked was using hydrocortizone 1% (suggested by my pediatrician)and using cloth diapers until it cleared up. I also let him go diaper less a lot. I got great diapers online, fuzzy bums. They were easy to use, and after the rash was gone I still used them from time to time. Hope this helps.

I have used Triple Paste for my son and my daughter. it is a little pricey but when it gets really raw it doesn't matter the price. There is a little tube for $8 or a tub of it for $28. Sometimes you have to ask the pharmacist for it as they have it behind the counter. Babies r Us has it right on the shelf.
Good Luck

Hi! I have two boys, ages 2 and 5. Some people don't think it works but it did for me. The people at Daycare told me about it.

After the bottom is washed, applied petoleum jelly - Vaseline and liberally sprinkled cornstarch. I stopped using the AD- (which I used during their regular diaper changes as "preventive"), because the AD and Destinin has frangrance - which meant that it burned/stung. Hope this helps.

I used the desitine night time (purple bottle) and caked it on. This usually cleared things within hours. The A&D and regular desitine are good for everyday use, but at night and for rashes I swear by the desitine night time. Good luck

Boudreaux butt paste each diaper change--it'll keep any wet or mess off his skin to prevent further irritation. My baby had a long diaper rash that turned into bacterial infection!! So we went to a pediatric dermatologist who gave us medication for a week then the butt paste which we still use months after he healed. Its thick and great!

My little breastfed guy also always seemed to have a diaper rash. Tried the various ointments but they didn't really help. He also became colicky at around 3-4 weeks of age. When he was 2 months old I decided to try Activia yogurt to see if that would help (I eat it, not him). He has not had a diaper rash since and within a day or two no more colick. He's now a content happy baby. Had previously tried gripe water and Mylicon but they didn't help either. Activia was my miracle cure!!

It could be something thst you're eating. Dairy is a common problem with little ones. Eliminate it from your diet, I believe it takes two weeks to clear both of your systems, then see if the rash subsides. You can try this with a variety of foods to see if one is the problem.

Hi T.,
I would call the doctor, He could have a yeast infection from his stool. It happened to all my kids and he will need a special prescription cream to get rid of it. None of the other creams/ointments will work.
good luck,

try a little breast milk. I know it sounds strange, but it works!

I never tried it, but I have heard that applying breastmilk to the area and allowing it to dry does help. Breastmilk pretty much cures everything. On my son I used Desitin overnight creamy like the other mother suggested and I loved it; to this day it really was the only thing that worked great. If that does not clean up the rash within a day I would see your doctor; it may be a fungal rash. Good luck.

My dgtr never had a diaper rash until she was older - but the creams only seemed to make it worse no matter what I tried. So, I used straight corn starch - (NO talc - it's really not good for the skin or when it is breathed in). I would load the corn starch on her and it cleared it up each time very quickly. Good luck!

Dear T.,
The best remedy for diaper rash is the old-fashioned one - Cornstarch. I don't know why it works, but it clears up rash and keeps it away if you use it at every diaper change. It's cheap, easy, and right in your kitchen.
The first time my daughter had diaper rash, I tried it (my grandmother's advice). The rash cleared right up, and neither of my children ever had diaper rash. One experience was enough.
Good Luck, W.

Hi T.,

I just went through this with my daughter. She has had horrible diaper rash on and off since birth. She screams when I use Desitin or Balmex on her so I think the zinc really bothers her skin. I finally found Aquaphor from Eucerin and it works like a dream. When the rash is really bad I put her in a baking soda bath, then let her bottom air out 10-15 minutes after the bath. I put a thick layer of the Aquaphor on and it usually looks 100% better by the next diaper change. I have two other children who never had diaper rash like this one and I used Desitin on both of them. Who knows what the difference is but I am so glad someone on Mamasource reccommended the Aquaphor.

Good luck !

Hi T.,
I used Desitin on my first and second children. My mother insisted that corstarch works, but didn't work for my girls.
My first had a rash for almost a month, and the only thing that finally worked for her was plain vaseline, with a little powder to keep the vaseline from sticking to the diaper.
My 3rd, my son, had sensitive skin and would scream whenever I put chemicle stuff on him; A & D ointment, Desitin, and other stuff I tried. I finally had to resort, again, to vaseline.
With my last, I had vaseline, but I also then tried Aveeno diaper rash cream. That worked well for her.
I would also suggest to try to let him air dry after bathing and keep him without a diaper as long as you can. In between diaper changes, a baby wash clothe, with warm water should work without hurting him.
Good luck

If its blistery and oozy, in addition to just red and sore, it may require a prescription. My son had a horrible diaper rash and was actually given two different creams/ointments from the pediatrician. I think it turns into and infection at times (yeast infection)

There is an ointment at Stop and Shop (I am sure you can find it elsewhere too) called Triple Paste (I Believe that is the name). It works wonderfully. I think it is made up od A&D , Desitine, and Neosporin...whatever it is, it's great!

If the rash returns or even continues, I would suggest taking out dairy, eggs, and OJ from your diet (infants are pretty sensivitive to these foods). See if it clears. Then one at a time, add OJ in and wait a few days. Then add eggs in and wait a few days. Finally add dairy. If his rash returns, you can find the offeding food! My son had an AWEFUL, raw rash and that is how I discovered his dairy sensitivity.

Good luck.

For the rash, try what my wife & I used on our 2 girls, now 3 & 6. Put some baking flour into a small pot & cook over low heat until it turns a light brown. Let it cool, & store it in a covered container. To apply, sprinkle the flour on baby's bottom like regular baby powder.

My son (now 3 months old) had the same problem early on - we stopped wipes and did just water like you are doing. Our pediatrician recommended letting him "air it out".... so one day, we got my husband on the couch covered in a waterproof mattress pad and just put our son on his tummy on my husband's chest. It's a risk (haha) but I'm telling you, by letting him air it out for a few hours a few times - it really did clear it up within a day!

Also, our dr recommended NOT using desitin (if it has zinc in it) b/c he said that is better for preventative, but once they have it to stick with the A&D or vaseline. But who knows - i think if you air it out, it will help alot.

Good luck! (And congratulations on your new little wonder!)
