Target and Bed Bath & Beyond are all advertising slip covers for loveseats and sofas. My furniture is from 1996 and not incredibly expensive, but they have been through kids, rabbits and dogs. Was thinking this might be a better option than all new furniture or living with it for years to come. Has anyone purchased these types of slip covers and do they work/stay in place?

I purchased mine from Bed, Bath & Beyond. It was hard to find one that would fit right. I like the fact that it is easily washable and love the color and material. This is also fitted on the inside, or the part that is tucked in, but I have found that if you sit on the couch, it is going to come "un-done". We had purchased one from Walmart, and it did not fit right and the material was not attractive.
One thing they always did on Trading Spaces was to get PVC pipe and stick it in behind the cushions to keep them in place. You put on the slip cover, tuck it in, then put the PVC pipe in the tuck behind the cushions. It worked for us on our old couch.
The slip covers called "Sure Fit" work the best in my opinion. If the bottom cushions come off your couch, I would get the 2 piece set where the cushions are in a pillow case type cover and the other piece goes over the couch.
And the pvc pipe works well to help keep it in from bunching up. Overstock has them for about the best price.
I have 3 children and furntiure bought in the 98 and we use slip covers. Really nice thing about them vs new furniture, if they get messy, you can take them off and wash them, put them back on and you have nice, clean furniture again. I plan to wait a few more years before buying new furniture and the covers will make that possible. They do come loose some, though I have found if you roll up magazines and rubberband them in a tube shape and put that down in the cracks, it helps the covers stay in place. You can actually buy things that are supposed to have the same effect, but why buy them if you already have old magazines sitting around. I would definitely look for covers that are machine washable--otherwise you lose that benefit.
We bought a slip cover for our sofa. Some friends gave us their old couch and it had an ugly flower print on it and so we bought a cover at Wal-Mart for it. Ours has elastic all around the bottom so that it stays on better and covers the whole back of the sofa. My MIL bought one for their couch after she liked ours so much, and got it from JCPenney's, but hers didn't cover the entire couch, and as a result, it doesn't stay on and ended up being a pain in the butt. I like ours because it's washable - I usually end up washing it every 1-2 weeks cuz of the kid, pet, spills and whatever else happens to it, but love the fact that I don't have to worry about ruining a good sofa because something gets spilled on it.
My suggestion? Look for one that covers the entire sofa, loveseat, chair or whatever and is definitely washable.
I got the ones from Target and I really like it and several people commented on how nice it look in the pictures our agent posted (we were selling the house to move). They fit my couch and love seat well, but you need two people to get it on and set correctly the first time.
We got one from Target to cover an old, ugly sofa. It worked fine for that time period, but once you sit on the couch a few times, the cover starts to get loose and baggy. I always thought that it looked cheap/collegy to have a slipcover, but ours wasn't an expensive one either. I've seen some furniture covered before and you can't even tell there's a slipcover on it. So, I guess it just depends on how much you want to spend on your slipcover. I think Ikea has some too. Good luck!
