Does Your Child Have More than One Swirl/whorl on His/her Head?

My son has two that look like wings on the back of his head. I read only 5% of the population has more than one swirl. Does your child? If so...what are they like? This is just out of curiosity. I read that horses that have 2 swirls are more "complicatd" and many people who have the two swirls are ambidextous. My son is definetly more "complicated"!

What can I do next?

The swirl is more commonly known as the cow-lick for most. A lot of people have two, one in the front by the bangs and then the other at the back of the head. Some stick up like crazy and have to be tamed with products and others lie down nicely and never create havoc. I seriously doubt that the swirls mean anything except whether or not you will be a hat wearer when you grow up ;)

My oldest daughter has two swirls..one to the left, one to the right. She is super smart and designs navel ships in Virginia now. Growing up she was a handful, but no matter what trouble she got into, she always had straight "A's"...without studying. I kid you not! She never brought a book home in High School and slept through most of her classes...lol.

Oh...and I also heard that the swirls in the back of the head define whether or not the person will be right or left handed.

they are totally normal...im a hair stylist and swirls/whorls/cowlicks are very common...my husband has 2 in the back of his head and one on the side. They don't mean anything and theres really no reason for them...its just a change in the growth pattern

My daughter has two - right on the back of her head, 1 inch apart. What it does is give her a natural poof (the kind some people tease their hair to get). Add to that her thick, wavy naturally blond-streaked light brown hair and what you have is a 9yr old with hair that looks like it belongs on a soap opera in the '80s. She hates it now because it's hard to keep detangled and brushing is always a hassle, but someday, when her friends are paying $$$ to get theirs "done", all she'll have to do is roll out of bed. I swear, I've never seen a head of hair like this on a child before.

And she's super complicated and ambidextrous (writes with her left, plays tennis and violin as a righty). Don't know if it's because of the swirls, though...

My son has a figure eight swirl on the top rear of his head....he is left handed but also uses his right hand well...he has a sensitive side and a rough and tumble side but is a joy...complicated ...yes but aren't we all...he is also very creative and is a good soul. Enjoy him and it gets better as he gets older to get over the "complicated" nature.....

Interesting question! Never noticed this before but my 4 month old has 2 about 1 centimeters a part on the back of his head. I guess that explains why his hair stands up like a parakeet!! I don't know about him being complicated though! :)

My son has 1 in the front, another on the top, and another at the back, plus he has what we call a "widows peak" which he gets from my mother unfortunately. My son is very ambidextrous and that he gets from me thank God. LOL He also has the softest hair I have ever felt, even my cousins who are hairdressers say it. He is a freshman in high school and now wears his hair short and clean cut and he is also over 6 feet tall, nothing like me.

Swirls? Like cowlicks? My son has three!! Good Lord it's hard to do his hair. He has two on the top back of his head and one on the front (right at his hair line). Poor boy! His hair sticks up on one side and sticks down on the other. I haven't read anything about them being more complicated or ambidextrious.
My son is sooooo easy and he is CLEARLY left handed and left footed. Not good with the right at all. So, I don't know about that. lol

Well im 18, born october 27. I have two swirls that are very close to eachother. I do not know why I have them but I feel normal. I learn things pretty quick and finish things without tryning but im pretty sure all of us couldve been like that depending on how were raised and if we choose to FOCUS and LISTEN. I was a trouble maker around my friends and family and got myself into hecka trouble (psh), but at the same time I was like the nicest person you can meet. Its like I got two brains and two sides livin in one head. I smoke alot of weed guys and I still remember alot. Im very active and dominate almost every sport. Thats pretty much it.

Many kids with double swirls are completely problem free although My two youngest sons (11,12) both have the double swirl. my 12 yr old has since bitrh had sensory disorder. Bright lights, sounds, stimulation are all overwhelming to him. He is VERY intelligent, albeit a bit obsessive.
My 11 yr old was born with soft cleft palate and has experienced other midline anomally's associated with the double swirl.
The geneticists said the phenomena is caused by the left and right sides of the brain/body growing independently instead of at the exact same time as each other. the two halves normally join together around 6-9 weeks prenatal gestation. In cases where the development is independent, the risk of midline anomallies is greater.
It also means that there is usually not a predominant brain side resulting in abidextrous. Both my boys are ambi.
My youngest also has gastro issues, no compulsion control, ADHD and Tic Syndrome, possibly Tourette's. These are also being attributed to the anomally.

Many kids with double swirls are completely problem free though!!
