Ear Wax Removal

Debrox is the method of choice when folks come to the pharmacy that I work at...looking for help. Whatever you do...avoid q-tips...I know it seems to be helping but if you have a huge build-up of ear wax you are just packing it down into the ear canal even more firmly when you use a q tip. I have also had a friend who SWEARS by the candling...but I think you have to go to someone who knows how to go about doing it...it isn't something you want to try on your own.

My husband has this problem. He has to have the doctor or nurse do the removal.

Ear candling is dangerous and does not work.
People have had hot melted wax drip into their ears, scorch their ear drums and then had trouble removing candle wax from ears (it's much harder than ear wax).

You can squirt wax out of your own ears with warm water (add a few drops peroxide) just like your doctor does it.

I've done candling, but it's scary! We do it in the garage and put tin foil over my face to protect it. I'd much rather have it irrigated at the doc. It's amazing to have all that crud out of there!

i have done ear candles. you don't need to be an expert, but you do need to take care, as you are dealing with fire. you can buy them at a vitamin store usually. DO NOT DO IT BY YOURSELF. do not lay ont he couch or near flammable things. pull your hair back. maybe do it at the kitchen table. you put the narrow end into your ear, while laying your head on your side. make sure it has a good seal. it should be fine, but some people have bigger ear openings (my father in law did this and it ears are very large, so we had to cut the end so it was a little bigger tomake a good seal. have your husband/friend light the end. be patient. they ususally do not drop ashes or anything, but make sure someone watches the whole time. leave it lit until it burns about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way down. then, take it out and blow it out over the sink. you can cut it open to see all the wax that has come out...gross, but pretty amazing!
