Eyeglasses for Son

My son wears glasses and we have an eye appointment tomorrow night. We bought his first pair of glasses at lenscrafter but they were very pricey. Can anyone recommend a good place to get eyeglasses for kids that aren't overly priced but hold up well? We do not have optical insurance.

Thanks

I have ordered glasses through Eye Buy Direct.
They are fast, they have a great selection of frames and I've got glasses from there for $7.95 a pair. For that price it's easy to have a spare back up pair for emergencies.

I found out about www.zenni.com from the mom of a baseball player on my son's team. Her son got a pair of prescription eyeglasses for $8!! They are super cheap on the site and when I looked at the women's glasses, they were trendy and cute. I kind of figured they would be out of style or kind of, well, ugly. I didn't look at the kids glasses, because mine don't wear them (yet). You can input the prescription information and they will send them out to you. Even if you just need a back-up pair, at that price, it's so worth it!!!
Hope it works for you - good luck!!

If you have a Sam's Club or Costco card I suggest looking there. My daughter has been in glasses for almost four years and that's where I like to go. She has actually only been in three pairs of glasses. It's three because she wacked heads with another little girl and they hit in just the right spot which made them break. Costco usually has a better selection but I think Sam's club offers a one year FREE warranty in case of damage. I may be mistaken and it may be Costco that has that. Check into that. Also, both places adjust glasses for free. I am always getting my plastic frames readjusted.

Their prices have been great. I paid around $100-$150 for each pair including the lenses. When her eyes change I just pay $50 for new lenses and keep the same frame. It's a good idea to have a backup pair however just in case something does happen.

Their eye exams are pretty good too. I think it's around $70 or $80. In the past, with insurance at other places I have paid the same. I do not have optical now which is why I go there.

Good luck!

Walmart you can get them for $40 plus they will replace them or fix them at no cost for any reason.

Edited: FYI the cheap walmart deal are a much better quality lens then he ones that come with the $8 zenni glasses plus lots of eye doctors recommend you don't use the cheap Internet places. Oh and they have a D rating with the bbb

My 5 year old daughter just started wearing glasses last June. We ended up getting her glasses at Walmart (it's where she found a pair she liked). They were really reasonably priced and they come with a 12-month guarantee. She has managed to break the same arm on her glasses 3 times and they have replaced the frame for free all 3 times. I have since bought her a really cheap back-up pair as well. I think her original frames were about $68 (don't remember, insurance covered them) and her back-up frames were only $9. The lenses run about $15 a piece without any of the special coatings.

go to www.twopair.com They offer two complete pair of single vision glasses including frames and exam for $69.95. I believe they are owned by Walmart and having two pairs for a kid is probably the best bet. I shop there for my girls. I wear bifocals and get mine at Costco. They have the cheapest cost for something more than simple glasses that I have found. (My glasses anywhere else cost around $600.00 but I get everything I need at Costco for $169 plus cost of frames.)

Hope this helps.

Have you tried Sears? They usually have an optical store. Around where I live, there is a a Sears Optical that isn't even IN a Sears store. It is JUST an optical store. The optomtetrists hours vary, but the store itself is open even when he isn't there. They make adjustments to your frames when they get bent for no charge (pretty frequent need with a kid). And they run special's often. That is where I get my glasses from. Mine are pretty pricey, but only because I have a really strong prescription, and I like the frameless lenses... so they look like coke bottles if I don't get the ultra-thin lenses. And I like the anti-glare and other goodies, too. It all adds up. But my prescription doesn't change much and I can wear a pair for 3 years. A kid, they won't last that long, and their prescription may change often... so the cheapie deals that they offer (two sets for $99 sometimes) might be the way to go.

What insurance do you have? Our sears optical retailer gives us a discount for having Geico car insurance. And just for having BlueCross BlueShield, there is a discount on certain services/purchases. Be sure and ask what they offer discounts for... it may have no relation to whether or not you have "optical" insurance. We recently took out dental insurance, and as a "free" bonus, we receive optical coverage with a sister company that we don't pay anything extra for. Be sure and ask your insurer for other things if there are any benefits you might be unaware of.

We got our daughter's glasses at Wal-Mart because they had some frames that she loved and fit her well. She has had them for almost five months and we've never had a problem with them. I read horror stories on-line about Wal-Mart optical, but they were very helpful and very reasonably priced.

Does your son have medicaid? If he does, then his glasses will be covered by medicaid, I know because my son has medicaid and has had two different eye surgeries and now wears glasses. Find your local DHS (Department of Human Services) office to apply. Good luck!

Costco. We don't have insurance either and I called a multitude of places and Costco had the best prices.

We have used Walmart, and Lesncrafters, now we use the optical shop with our eye doctor, I know much more expenzive but they are shatterproof, and transitions, and I just feel much more comfortable them.
Plus they have not broken, we were always going back to Walmart to have them tweaked.
I did like the Lenscrafters glasses but we didn't have one in NC.
