Favorite Books for Boys Ages 5 - 7 - Saint Paul,MN

I have 3 nephews, ages 5 years, 7 years, and 7 years. I would like to get them books for Christmas. I'm not sure what they'd like. I have girls. What are some of your boys' favorite books? I don't want to buy books with licensed characters (e.g., Disney Cars, Spiderman, etc.). Thanks.

What can I do next?

Captain Underpants is a big hit! They also like Magic Tree House, Harry Potter, and anything gross or unsightly, like Ripley's Believe it or Not books, Guiness book of world records, etc. A lot of boys also like non fiction like books about trucks, snakes, wildlife in general. The 5 year old probably has a wider range of things he likes, one of my favorites is David Shannon's is The Day I Became A Pirate or The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, I can't remember if that's Shannon or not, but it's great!

L.,
My son likes almost any book you read to him and he is 5. I got an idea from his kindergarten teacher to get book that relate to the child. This idea has been very successful because he is even more interrested. For example he broke his foot so I went and looked for books about broken bones, also he had a loose tooth so I found some books about the "tooth feiry" and loose teeth. He really loved how he could relate.
Hope this helps :)

Check out the Dan Gutman books for the 7 yo (Miss Smalls is Off The Wall, etc, and also, he has sports hero books). For the 5 yo how about animal, nature books, or Kipper or Frog & Toad for both ages?

I have two boys 5 and 8. We love love love Skippy John Jones books. They are so GREAT!! And lots of fun for mama to read. Mine also love "The day I became I Pirate" and "Pirates don't change diapers". Also lots of fun to read out loud...if you are into doing voices and such (which I totally am!)
"Stone Soup"
All Dr Suess books.
"Marty and the Mango"
"Do like a Duck Does"
"Duck rides a Bike" (I think that's the name of it)
Are the 7 year olds reading on their own? My son loves Nate the Great books and Fly Guy. Also, we are into Diary of a Wimpy Kid...but mom may need to read that for them.
If you have a Costco card...we went last year during Christmas and were able to get a pack of books for $10 and I think 8 books came in it. We still read those books a lot.
Good Luck

check out the website guysread.com - there are lots of suggestions. Most boys are interested in VERY different things than most girls. Hvaing one of each we got used to shopping on both sides of the toy store and bookstore!

"No, David" is pretty funny and I believe that the author has written more than one book at this point.

Depending on their reading level, "The Magic Treehouse" series is great! There are 44 books so far in this series.

I always like going to a ma and pop bookstore and getting their employee's opinions. Also, going to your local library and asking their librarians for what is flying off their shelves is a way to find more titles.

The "Captain Underpants" series was a big hit here (but may be too "old" for the 5 yr old). Even I would crack up over those books - lots of humor, especially related to school.

We also loved the "I Spy" books . . . (mine are 16 & 13 now).

Nice question! Good luck!

Have you heard of Barefoot Books yet? They are not sold in most book stores, but are available through direct sellers (Ambassadors) and online- www.ReadandGrow.com, and are FREE from licensed characters! YAY! They are "book lovers" books. Beautifully illustrated, with great messages, and fun to read! For a 5-7 year old boy, I would suggest The Barefoot Book of Knights or Pirates, as well as The Barefoot Book of Monsters!, and Tales of Mystery and Magic, or Ruby's School Walk. Fireside Stories is also another great one for this time of year. :) Your girls will love them too! Honestly, you will notice the difference when you see them. They are just very special books that every child deserves to have in their collection...

Also, I thought I would mention that they are offering free shipping on orders of $60 or more, AND, to help you save, if you enter the code SCSHFT upon checkout, you will get 15% off too! ;) So, enjoy! If I can be of any more help, feel free to message me.

Make Way For Ducklings was a huge hit for my kids at those ages. Also, look at anything by Beverly Cleary for the older ones.

My 5-year-old daughter loves "Punk Farm" and "Punk Farm on Tour" by Jarrett J. Krosoczka. The author's website (http://www.studiojjk.com/) even has songs from the picture books that you can download. He has written lots of very fun books, but these two are our absolute favorites.

That author also has a series of graphic novels (Lunch Lady) that the older kids may enjoy. I understand that movies are in development for both Punk Farm and Lunch Lady.

A few other books that are pretty gender-neutral that we have enjoyed:
"Gooney Bird Greene" by Lois Lowry (there are several books in the series)
"Mercy Watson" by Kate DiCamillo (currently six books in the series)
"The Littles" by John Peterson (LOTS of books)
"The Scrambled States of America" and "The Scrambled States Talent Show" by Laurie Keller
"Bean Thirteen" by Matthew McElligott (he has written several others that are great, but we read this one several times per day the entire time we had it checked out from the library).
