Last night my 2 year old son spiked a fever of 102.2, with no other symptoms at all. We took him to the ped. this morning and she found nothing wrong...Fever was gone and he was perfectly fine. I always thought a fever meant a sign of infection so I thought for sure he had a ear infection, flu, etc. Im a little puzzled as to why he would spike a fever so sudden. Dont get me wrong, I am happy he is feeling better and they found nothing else wrong....but Im just a little puzzled. It just concerns me I guess.....can anyone shed a little light on this ...Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys...Megan, we did check for strep and thankfully it was negative, so we were able to rule that out along with other things.....Shaun, Im sure you are correct, he may have had a touch of something and the fever did its job. He is feeling fine now, back to his silly playful self.

When my daughter was about 4 or 5 she began developing small fevers... Every evening around 5 or 6 she would have a low grade fever of about 100 - 101. Her ped ruled out everything imaginable & finally decided she had an allergy to some unknown substance that she came into contact with. She took Benadryl for it. Eventually it went away - it was just gone. Never noticed anything different - soap, soup, bug spray (we lived in an apartment complex with pest control), milk all the same. It just went away as mysteriously as it had come...

There's a huge misconception about fevers. Fevers are GOOD! 102.2 isn't a high fever in a 2 year old. Our pediatrician won't even consider seeing my kids for a fever unless it's at 104 or higher AND won't come down with Ibuprofen or Tylenol. OR if the fever has lasted more than 5 days. It could have been that your son had a slight virus, the fever kicked in and did it's job. So, his body is doing exactly what it's suppose to do!

Fevers come and go and are extremely common. It is not always necessary to seek medical care for a fever, and many infections, such as viral infections can't be treated anyways and have to run their course.

Here is a good overview of when it is necessary to call the Dr for a fever concern:

and what you can do at home to care for a child with a fever:

My 14mo old daughter just did the very same thing. Just finished antibiotics for an ear infection Friday, and Saturday she didn't eat much for dinner. Sunday morning she woke up with a fever, but we could tell she didn't feel good, she didn't want to play, just wanted to crawl up in our lap. We treated her fever and took her to the ped this morning (however, her fever broke this morning). She had a red throat, Strep test was pos. Sometimes, though, it is nothing. Fever is just the body's way of letting you know it is fighting off something. Could be your son fought off whatever bug was trying to get him down, or it could be that the symptoms haven't caught up with him yet. Either way, Good Luck! Hope it is nothing!!

My son had a low-grade fever recently, on and off for 2-3 days. Turned out after the third day to be roseola. The rash just showed up on his torso and head out of the blue after the fevers had stopped.

Happened to my daughter last week. Took her to the pedi and was told it was just a virus. I thought we fwver something was wrong too but this fever was 101 w/ no other symptoms for 4 days. Wierd but apparently fever with no symptoms can just be a virus and then it goes away and all is better. The virus is going around. Glad he is better.

I learnt something interesting from my pedi a while back. We have 5 kids and so could find myself living in his office if I was not careful! He said when kids are little their bodies cannot regulate temperature as well as adults (we all know that from having babies that need to be wrapped slightly more warmly than adults). Apparently that regulation only comes with age, sometimes up to age 5. So in an adult a fever of 102.2 is really high, in a kid it's not so bad, especially when not combined with other symptoms. Of course you want to do the right thing, but that set my mind at rest, and made sense to me.

Your child can spike a fever and then no other symptoms develop. Our body gets fever so that it heats up and fights off a virus or bacteria. It's possible that his body did the job it was trying to do. I also know two people who's kids went through a couple of years with these on and off fevers. Neither know why until this day but they outgrew it. During these years, they were hard children. It could be due to viruses they've been exposed to that are wrecking havoc on their immune systems. We may never know. Anyway, just something to watch for. Lastly, my kids have done what you experienced a couple of times. It is my belief that their immune system was just doing its job.

My son use to do that. He'd be fine, spike a temp of 101 or 102, then half an hour later it would be gone without doing anything about it.
I got use to looking how he was acting. If he had a temp but didn't act sick, I'd wait and see where it went and it usually disappeared quickly.
If he acted sick (doesn't matter if he has a temp or not), then I'd try to get to the bottom of it. My son always wanted to take a bath when he felt crummy.
If the temp stuck around, and then kept coming back after Tylenol wore off - it was time to see the Dr.

I'm sure others have said this, I haven't read any other post. Usually, not always, but usually a higher fever is viral and lower one MAY be infection but not always. This time of year it is more than likely going to be something viral and you may even see it go back up this evening but don't be alarmed.
