Hello again Moms,

here's my situation. Both of my kids are sick with a fever. My son seems to be getting better already, it's my daughter that worries me. She had a temperature on and off for 2! weeks now. I keep calling the doctor, went to see the doctor, but they can't find anything. I just feel so helpless. There is nothing I can do but give her medications to make her feel comfortable. Has anyone ever have a similar situation? I think it's just crazy that they are not really trying to help her especially with having a fever for so long. She is so miserable.

Thank you in advance for any response.

P.

I don't know what to tell you other then there is something going on. I am a medical assistant and i know that no one runs a fever for no reason. Maybe you should go to a different doctor and see if they can find out what is going on. Good luck and let me know what you hear

As children can pass things back and forth, be very careful of having other children around....
Keep lots of fluids in her.....
As long as she is not allergic to either tylenol or motrin, you can try this to keep her temp. down (A Doctor at Akron Children's Hospital informed me of this)you can give your child a dose of Motrin then 1 hr. later give her a dose of Tylenol. Then you will repeat this if necessary again 6 hr. from last dose of Motrin...
So, say you give her Motrin at 4 p.m. at 5 p.m. you can give her Tylenol. Then at 10 p.m. she can have another dose of Motrin, and another dose of Tylenol at 11 p.m. !!!!

Other than that just try to keep her as comfortable as possible!!!! I know how hard it is, because my daughter whom is 14 mos. is sick all the time... And, just recently was sick for 3 mos. straight!!!!
Good luck!!!!

Has the dr tested for a bladder (urinary tract infection or UTI) infection? My daughters would have on/off temperatures and that's usually what it was. Read more about symptoms here:
http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/commoninfections/l/bl_uti.htm

They can easily test her urine, so try to get her to drink lots before her next appt, which should be very soon, in my opinion! You don't want an infection to get worse and cause other problems. You said she's miserable so I'm assuming the temperature is high when it spikes? Poor thing. Good luck.

P.,
She night be teething? Also, is she dehydrated? That will cause them to have stomach acid build up with some throwing up and a fever (that won't go away until they do an IV)Last year I had 2 with that problem and my daughter ended up having Rotovirus. I would ask for a chest xray. I used ot take them to a family dr. and he just kept telling me she was ok adn giving her perscriptions. After 4 weeks of a fever and throwing up I switched to a peditritian and they were pretty agressive about treating it..she spent 2 days in the hospital with and IV and came out 2 days later and was great. So, you might want to just take her over to Childrens. Good luck.

I agree, take her to another doctor.
It sounds like she has a virus but any virus that would last that long is not something she needs to get over on her own.

However, when you say fever, is it above or below 102? If it remains above 102 over fifty percent of the time it's pretty serious. If it's below that, it is probably not as bad, but still worth getting a second opinion over. All else fails they can run bloodwork to make certain everythings working normally.

hello P.

My question is how high is her fever? My stepdaughter had a fever starting on a saturday night...around 102-103 she was given tylenol and it would go down. As soon as it started wearing off it spiked up. Her mother and us took her to the ER on Sunday night and they said she had a virus and not to come back until she has had a fever for 5 days! She stayed home the next day but the fever kept going.Went to school on tuesday. still had a fever. wednesday afternonn they called her mom and she had 104.3 fever. She took her down again and this time they did an xray and found she had PNEMONIA. So I would say if your doctor has not done an xray to check for pnemonia try that. I hope they can find something so she can feel better soon.

The only light I can shed is to have the doctor check her blood. I had something similar prior to my pregnancy. It was a kin to mono - called CMV (cytomegalo virus). They can find it via bloodwork. You may want to google it to see if she has any of the other symptoms. I had a low-grade fever for weeks - almost a month and was very tired/fatigued.

Hope you find out what it is soon. It would worry me too!

First of all I wouldn't freak out and assume your Pediatrician is an idiot. A fever is a natural immune response to fighting off infections. In a young child it may take their immune system longer to fight off a new infection. Is her fever very high? Does it come down when you give her Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen? How is she acting? Does she have other symptoms? I'm sure these are all things your doctor is taking into consideration. If it is a virus causing the infection then there is nothing a doctor can do other than treat the symptoms and monitor them for signs of other infections that they can treat, like a secondary ear or sinus infection, or complications. When my son was about 6 months old he ran a fever, on and off, for about the same amount of time. I kept in contact with the peds office and took him in about 3 times, they consistently checked his ears and sinuses and did a chest x-ray to look for Pneumonia. He finally just got better. They never found anything wrong specifically, just another virus that he had a harder time fighting off. Trust your gut. If you really think that there is something she needs treatment for, then go to another doctor or an Urgent care center. I would hope that it would take more to shake your confidence in your doctor than a persistent fever. Good luck to you, I hope she feels better soon.

P.,
Did you try to call Ask a nurse? Or call the E.R. and ask them? A fever even a low grade fever that holds on for more than a few days needs to be seen and taken care of by someone.
If you doctor isn't helping call another one for a second opinion.
Good Luck
I hope your daughter is much better by now

Dear P.,

My pediatrician told me when I first started taking my daughter to the doctor as an infant that a high spiked fever (101 or higher) was likely a virus and that the fever shouldn't last more than a few days but other symptoms might last 10 days to 2 weeks. He also said a low, continuous fever that lasted for more than a couple days was likely a bacterial infection that would require an antibiotic to clear up. My daughter is now 4 years old and I have consistently found this to be the case.

Also, anything viral that lasts more than two weeks did turn out to need antibiotics to clear up having turned into something bacterial. Anything that lasted less than two weeks went away without medication.

I agree completely with the other moms here - get another doctor. Trust your instincts!

Good luck and God Bless. E.

I know it's hard to watch your daughter run a fever off and on. My daughter aslo recently has been runing a fever off and on for about a month now,But i know hers is to do her low immune systems caused by her heart condition. She has asd of the heart. Though the fever hasn't been bothering her to much lately maybe cuz she does this every yr. The only advice i could give you is keep giving her fluids and tyenol to keep the fever down. The fever should eventually go away. I know it's the flu season also so she could of caught the flu and that can last 2-3 weeks. Hoped i was able to help you out a lil. If you feel her doctor isn't concerned enough get a second opinion. Trust your insincts. Cuz noone knows there child more then the mom does.

Hello moms-

I have never been in this situation with a fever that lasts so long. My suggestion- get a second opinion from another doctor. Talking to friends and family I have come to the realization that no two doctors are alike. They call it a science, but I think doctors have different opinions which drive their practices. Maybe another doctor will try a different test or medicine. (go out of the entire practice if you can). I hope this helps and I would love to hear how your daughter is feeling soon.
Good luck,
J.

P.,

First of all hang in there. Secondly I would find another peditrician. My son who is four now had the same problem when he was 3, it ended up being a bacterial infection in his blood and it took me taking him to the Cleveland Clinic and insisting that they do lab work and x-rays to find the problem!! My new dr. finally told me that a fever that lasts more than 3 to 5 days is not normal and to keep a journal of how high it gets and to let him know. So make sure you keep fluids in her and keep her comfortable. My son seems to do better with Motrin rather than Tylenol, you may want to try that. Good luck and let everyone know your outcome. If you need help finding a new Peditrician please let us know and I am sure someone can help!!!! Good Luck

Sorry to hear your children are not feeling well. Our pediatrician has me rotate between advil and tyenol when my boys run a fever and it seems to help a whole lot. Hope this helps.

Take her IMMEDIATELY to a new doctor, or the emergency room. Do what you have to do to get another opinion. Your pediatrician is an idiot, if he's telling you its okay to have a fever for two weeks. I have two children and my ped always said to bring them in if the fever last for more than 3 days. Two weeks is outrageous, I've always heard "fever" means "infection". There is a reason she's had a fever so long and if your doc cant find it talk to someone else who will. Good Luck
