Hello, I know this is probably a stupid question but my son has his first tooth that has finally come through his gum at 8 months, but it's really crooked . One side looks like it goes towards his tongue and one to his lip. I mean it's not all the way like that but it looks like its half way there. I know its his baby tooth but will this be a problem with all his other baby teeth when they come in does anyone know. Another question do you think his adult teeth will be that crooked since his baby teeth are kind of? Any feeback would be great. Thank you very much

This is very common, the lips and tongue will very likely guide the tooth into the correct position. It may happen with other baby teeth as well the the lips and tongue will help correct this problem. The same thing is very common with the adult teeth start to erupt. I hope this information is helpful.

Hi S. - Most people I've talked to say that the first teeth usually come in pretty crooked, but they start to straighten out over time. My 13-month old has four teeth and they all came in fairly crooked. At her 12-month check-up the pediatrician said it's now recommended that kids have their first dental visit around 12-months instead of waiting until they are 2 or 3. I had my own dentist appointment last week and the dentist took a quick look at my daughter's teeth when my appointment was finished. She said the teeth looked good and that most first teeth come in crooked. Hope this is helpful! It doesn't hurt to get it checked out if you're concerned though.

Hello, I know you've gotten a lot of responses, but I thought I would give you a slightly different insight. As a child I have the worst crooked teeth ever. We're talking teeth that were completely sideways, I had a double molar for a while, the works. The dentist told my mom I would need major braces and wanted to start working on them before my permanent teeth came in. We didn't have the money to do anything, so we didn't. When my adult teeth came in they were perfectly straight, I've never had braces and people are amazed when I tell them this. I know this doesn't guarantee your child's teeth will be straight, but I thought I would give you a little hope.

I know you have lots of responses but thought I'd throw mine in also. My daughter had an overbite on one side and an underbite on the other---I thought for sure she would have to have braces! Her permanent teeth have come in completely straight no over or underbites!! My son had perfect baby teeth and his permanent are coming in crooked but even they seem to be straightening!! So I wouldn't worry about it. I know it's hard---even with my experiences I worry about my 2yr old (3rd child)--his top teeth are crooked!!

S.,

I know exactly what you are talking about. My son's two bottom baby teeth formed a "V" in his mouth. The dentist said they would even out when the rest of the baby teeth came in, but they never did. He is now 7 and has lost both of the bottom baby teeth. Surprisingly, the replacement permanent teeth came in straight. Point being, you never know what will happen. But there are always braces!

I think lots of babies' first two teeth (which are usually the lower front two) point slightly inward... But this disappears after the other teeth start coming in and help "keep each other in line" so to speak.

HI S.,
I'm a dental hygienist and get mom's and dad's worried remarks all the time. The baby tooth will eventually turn because of the strong lips and tongue. Over time they will push it into normal place. And, don't worry about the adult teeth. They will have a mind of their own. The only time the baby teeth have an affect on the adult teeth is if there is decay in the baby tooth that is not fixed and forms an infection that can reach the adult tooth. SO, no worries for you. Hope that helps!!

My sister had crooked teeth - primary and secondary. However, my husband had crooked primary teeth and straight secondary teeth. I had straight teeth all the way through. I have a cousin who has straight primary teeth but crooked secondary teeth. So what I'm getting at is that teeth are individualistic. If you are concerned take you child to a dentist. Better to get kids there early so they don't freak out when they have to go to the dentist later in life.

Did you or your baby's father need braces? My husband has really crooked teeth and I had braces as a teen--my 13 year old is in braces too. I wouldn't stress to much about it though. My 8 year old had kind of buck teeth as a baby and they have straightened out--however now that she is losing her baby teeth her permanent teeth are coming in crooked. Thank goodness for orthodontics!! My husband gets his braces next!!!

Hi S.-

I have been a Dental Assistant for many years. This is completely normal. They will straighten out and is definitely no indication to how the permanent teeth will come in. Hope this helps!

i wouldnt worry to much about it right now. teeth are very genetic. so if you or his fater had good teeth your son should also and the same it you had crooked teeth. i would wait and see what the other teeth do once they start comming in before you get to concerned about this one. it could straighten itself out once more start to come in. my son had a huge gap inbetween his top two teeth but is getting less and less now that he has it top eye teeth also. im sure he will be just fine.

All my children's first few teeth came down like then then once more started to come in, they straightened out. My oldest has lost most of her baby teeth, and her adult ones are straight, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I was just reading about this in What to Expect: The First Year, and they said there was no relationship between the primary and secondary teeth. So if your little one has all crooked baby teeth, that's no indication of whether the secondary teeth will be crooked. It would never hurt to talk to a dentist if you're concerned, but that's what the book said!
