Fondant Help Please

Hi, I'm planning a Alice in Wonderland cast party. I am ordering cupcakes from Sams club, just light blue frosting, nothing else. I want to make fondant circles and write 'eat me' on them and place them on top of the cupcake.

I have already bought the pre-made fondant (white) and fondant markers. What I need to know, is how early can I make these? I want the fondant to be on the harder side (not too soft to write on or to put on top of cupcakes). When should I put the fondant topers on (can it get soggy??).

Of course, I have lots to do before the event, and would love to do something ahead time....just not sure how I should do this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you!! I will ask for extra icing and adhere it that way. I do like the flag idea too, however since I have everything I need I will stick with fondant.

And yes, for anyone who has ever read or seen Alice in Wonderland, eat me is completely an appropriate phrase. Alice herself eats little cakes that say eat me. The drinks will indeed say drink me. But I did make sure with staff it was OK.

Thanks for the help!!

Diane B - Have you ever read "Alice in Wonderland"?
You should! Great book and a total classic! (as well as 'Through the Looking Glass').
You'd understand that 'eat me' (and 'drink me') are nothing suggestive or lewd if you are familiar with the book.
You can Google "Alice in Wonderland Eat Me cookies" and you'll find all sorts of cute ideas!

I find fondant gets a little chewy if it gets too hard - it'll be good but I like a little softer texture.

It's an Alice in Wonderland cast party. Eat Me is perfectly appropriate (although I'm sure the kids will giggle a bit). I expect you'll also have corresponding drinks that say Drink Me? It'd be a good idea if not.

Elena B has it right - I would write on the fondant first and attach with a dollop of fresh icing - most stores will provide extra icing in a sealed container for you if you ask. I'd prepare the circles, but then attach them that day. And personally, I'd completely forgo the fondant (I think it tastes awful, personally) and use cute little paper flags on toothpicks. But I don't remember - was it written directly on the cake? I know the drink was a tag on the bottle.

ETA: Of course, they're already running around repeating the phrase! It's a cast part for a play they've worked on for months and a line they've said for months. Pretty sure the giggles have probably all been worked out by now.

oh, i LOVE this! i'm a HUGE alice fan (the books take on increasing depth and resonance when re-read as an adult, especially if you're a mythophile- think persephone) and whenever i have time in may i have a mad hatter tea party and invite all of my best accomplices.

unfortunately for me, i SUCK at decorations, and think this idea is utterly adorable. i tried to do the 'eat me' with a piping tube and the results were........illegible. wish i'd thought of the pre-made fondant.

don't forget to put 'drink me' on your beverage dispensers!

one year (when i had help<G>) there were signs with mushrooms and caterpillars and white rabbits and dodo birds leading into the house. and a mad hat was required for admittance!

i hope your party is a huge smash.

I think the problem that you might encounter is that the fondant must adhere to the frosting. Fondant is usually applied directly over fresh icing, so that it doesn't fall off, and if you pick up cupcakes that are pre-frosted, the frosting might already have hardened a little.

You can make a disc of fondant, write the words on it, and then put a dot of fresh frosting on the cupcake and then stick the disc to the top of the cupcake. It can be done in advance. Maybe the Sam's Club bakery can supply you with a little bag of extra frosting for that purpose. You should probably inform the bakery that you plan to add a fondant disc to the top so they don't make a giant swirled bunch of frosting on the cupcakes, like the soft-serve ice cream in a cone.

But I have another idea. (Diane B, I believe she's referring to the Alice in Wonderland original book, where Alice finds small cakes with the words "eat me" written on them. The cast members, if they're in a play, will easily identify the reference of the words.)

In the book, the words are written in currants. It would be pretty easy to ask Sam's Club to make the frosting on the top of the cupcakes fairly flat, not a high swirl of frosting. Then you could cut up currants or dried cranberries or golden raisins and form the words "eat me" with them, by sticking the fruits into the frosting and using a toothpick to nudge the fruits into place.. It might be easier than cutting fondant circles and writing on them, and it's truer to the book. Just an idea.

I know nothing about fondant so maybe someone else here can help you with that. But I'm not sure I'd use the phrase "eat me" for anyone, and certainly not for kids. Am I missing something about why you think this will go over well?

ETA - Yes, I know it's from the book. I just wasn't sure that absolutely everyone there was totally fine with it, including parents, and that you had planned for kids running around repeating this, perhaps after the party at school. Then someone (or two or three) takes photos and puts them all over Facebook, and it mushrooms into a possible problem that comes back to bite you. Just asking that you think about it, that's all.
