My 3 week old is gassy all the time!! He is constantly fussing and struggling to pass gas and to have bowl movements. He is breastfed and I have cut out almost everything from my diet, but nothing seems to work. I feel so bad when his little face is scrunched up and red and he screams sooooo loudly! Anybody have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all soooo much for your responses!! We have been trying the "Little Tummy" drops, and since they didn't work, I thought that no brand of gas drops would. We decided to try the Mylicon drops at your suggestion (it's only been a day or 2) and they seem to be helping atleast a litte - any little bit helps!!! I think I will also try the Gripe Water and see if that's even better. And a "fart song and dance" won't hurt either! Thanks again for the advice ladies, this makes it a lot easier being a first time (clueless) mom!

Hello!
My daughter was the same way. There are a few things that you can do to ease him up a bit, but he may still cry. There are simethicone gas drops (mylicon infant and others) that you can give. We would usually give them right before she ate until we knew the gassy signs better. We also made up 'fart' songs and bounced her through the episode. Granted the words to the song were to help US get through the screaming, but the bouncing and singing helpd to soothe her. We also made up a game called push out the farts (I Know, sounds crazy). Whenshe would get gassy, I'd help her scrunch her knees up to her chest and VERY GENTLY push down. She'd push one or two out and we'd clap and sing, and do it all over again.
The pain from gas for a baby is terrible and for some it is horrendous. There is not much that can be done to take it away, but like I said, we can ease it for them, and the crazy things are to ease us. It is hard to be a new mom, still in a daze, listening to your child cry when there is nothing you can do about it, so you have to do silly things to pass the time for you as well. You will be rewarded greatly from your son once the gassy stage lets up. For my daughter, it was about 2 and a half months. She began to love the six o clock hour that used to be the gassy time because we would soothe her. She was a year old on Wednesday, and we still use that time as special play time.
Also, I found that limiting stimuli, such as new people all at once, seemed to help the gas problem. If she had it quiet, but busy, she was ok. If if was a new and noisy environment that I didn;t ease her into, the gas was worse. For example, she was gassier if people came to visit for short periods and left, but if someone came to visit and it was a quiet visit (some playing, lower voices, etc) and they stayed a while longer, or if there was no change at all in our routine, she was less gassy (if that makes any sense).
I hope this helps some,
Jenn

My now 13 week old son was exactly the same...I stopped broccoli, cabbage, garlic, onions, EVERYTHING, NOTHING helped. So I reintroduced all those foods back into my diet and he was no better or worse for it. The weird thing that I noticed DOES effect him, Tomato products, sauce is the worst. But I will tell you he is just about fine now, he still has a hard time when it comes to pooping, but other then that, the gassyness just passed...good luck!! Oh try the sauce and tomato thing, but did you also try dairy?? I am sure you have but just wanted to make sure I mentioned it. And if you do not want to give your baby the Mylacon drops, there is a totally natural form of reliefe called Gripe Water and you can get it at any health food store or Whole Foods...its just ginger, fennel, a little tiny bit of sodium and chammomil...it works well!

Take care

Hi. My daughter was the same way. I had to eventually put her on Good Start Soy formula and I swear by doctor Browns bottles. They are a little pricey but they have this tube and stuff inside that makes all the air go out and is so good for the baby. I also used to use the gas drops for her Mylacon. If you are breast feeding and dont want to switch to bottles, I used to hold her flat and do small counter clockwise circles around her belly button. It seemed to soothe the pain and actually helped her relieve the gas.

Hi, my son went through the same thig--starting at about 3 weeks and it continued until i made SERIOUS modifications to my diet--and then it went away like magic.

For my son, it was no veggies whatsoever--no garlic and onions especially--and almost everything I make starts with garlic!LOL--I basically ate mushroom swiss burgers with a potato for months, but it worked, and we were all much happier. It cleared up at 5 mos and I could eat whatever I wanted. I remember it was pretty depressing over the spring and summer with all of the deliciolus fresh produce, but it worked--and it was worth it to have a happy, cooing baby instead of one screaming in pain--

i discovered his sensitivities when we drove a couple of days to see family and ate only fast food on the road--which i felt guilty about, but we had NO PAIN--then, as soon as i ate "healthy" he was in screaming agony--try to eat NO VEGGIES--and I mean NOTHING, don't even eat prepared salad dressings or sauces, cuz even traces of garlic were SO PAINFUL for myson-- and see what happens--for my son, there was a 10-12 hr delay between what I ate and his pain, so see if you can narrow it down--but it so worth it to ease his pain

also, try putting him on his back and "bicycling" his legs to get hyim to pass the gas--

hope this helps, and it will pass. good luck.

I hate to respond to this because i have NO good news for you, but I still breastfeed my daughter (15 and a half months) and she was the same way. I thought that if she had a different parent someone would have killed her. She literally cried 97% of the time she was awake, which was very often considering. It took her until she started walking around 13 months to stop crying so much. Whatever you do...dont give up nursing. Formula and cereal cover up what's really going on. Colic is caused by a premature intestinal tract, hopefully if you are lucky like most people it will go away within the first 3 months... if you are unfortonate like me...you will have to bare it for some time but love him just the same. Good luck.

Have you tried Mylicon drops? You can get them at CVS. They are for gas relief in babies. My 11 week old had the same problem and these seemed to help a lot. Good luck!

Hi J.,

Sorry to hear about your little guys troubles. I nursed all my kids. Can't really say I had your kind of problem. I changed what I ate and that seemed to help. Maybe you are eating something that you wouldn't necessarily think would be gassy? I know I have done that...I thought I was eating healthy...veggies and fruits. Come to find out some of the healthiest things I ate made me gassy along with the baby. I know garlic for me was a biggie. And too 3 weeks is a big time for growth spurts and baby changes. Maybe his body is just trying to adjust to things. What has worked for me...tummy massages ( Rub his tummy in circular motions while lying on his back)...it helps the gas to pass quicker. Also bring his legs up into a squatting position while he's still on his back. That also can help relieve gas. Finally, I have a friend who's son had alot of gas. She used Mylicon baby drops. ( Hope I spelled that right ) She told me it worked wonders for her son. Hope that helps! Hope the little guys feels better soon.

J.,
First, I love your name!!

Now, I'm so sorry to hear that baby is so fussy. You mentioned elimination of foods... most important are Milk and Wheat. First, milk. Be sure to eliminate as much uncultured dairy as you can. Dairy takes up to 8 weeks to exit your system, and with some babies you may not notice a huge difference for about 3-4 weeks, so hang in there.

My gut instinct on this though, from what you've shared is more related to how your feeding him rather than what's in your milk. Fore milk is extremely gassy in nature. It does not contain enough fats (found in the hind milk) to help level out the high energy nature of the fore milk. I would suggest that you try using one side for an entire feeding. Even if there is a break for burping, or repositioning. If his total feedings normally last 2-40 minutes, have him spend all of that time on the same breast. This will ensure that he gets the full benefits of the fore and hind milk, and that the breast has a chance to empty (not that it really does). Bowel movements in a breastfed child can be few and far between as well, so don't worry so much about him not pooping every day. Babies can go a week at times when fed mother's milk.

I HIGHLY recommend the Gripe Water. It is wonderful for everything from unexplained colic, to teething, to gassiness, upset tummy, you name it. Don't give up. You can figure this out. Consulting with a lactation consultant would be very helpful as well, since most Pediatricians have very limited knowledge when it comes to breastfed babies. If that's not the case with yours, drown them with questions... that what you pay them for. LOL! Otherwise, contact La Leche League, and they can get you in contact with one in your area.

If you want to talk more, feel free to get in touch.

Wishing you the best, and relief for your little man.

Blessings,
Rolinda

I have a 7 week old daughter and I had the same problem, until about 3 weeks ago.

From my diet I omitted all dairy, especially milk, chocolate and "gassy" vegetables. I supplement feedings with a formula I found made by Emfamil specifically designed for the gassy and fussy baby.

I also got a couple of the Dr Brown bottles. The Gripe Water they sell in the health store worked too.

We pump her little legs like she's riding a bicycle, bounce her, pat her back and keep her upright when she looks and sounds like she's having a gas attack. She also likes to be on her belly or her side better than on her back, we use the boppy to prop her.

After much recommendation from other mothers, I got the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block, the New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Baby Sleep Longer" from the library. It describes the babies first 3 months of life as the "fourth trimester" and really helped me understand what the new baby is really going thru. Highly recommended reading, really put the first couple months into better perspective for me.

Since I can't live without my cereal, I've tried Lactaid milk. It's not bad, a bit creamier than milk, but the taste is the same.

The baby and I are getting into a routine and it's getting better. She only wakes up one or two times a night now and that works wonders on my nerves!!!

my daughter was the same way when she was little. She is 6 months old and still has issues with gas but it is better than it was. I thought the hospital gave me the wrong baby thats how bad she was. She just screamed all day and night. Mylacon was my savior. I pumped it into her at every feeding and soon enough it started to work along with switching her formula. hope this helps good luck! :)
