My father is in the hospital battling lung cancer. He lives in Arkansas and I have already been down there once to visit him and plan on going again soon. I cannot go right now due to many reasons. I have been calling, sending gifts and cards but I am running out of ideas of what to send or do. Does anyone have any ideas? Right now he cannot eat because the radiation is burning is esophagus so food is out. Any suggestions would be great. Thank-you!

As soon as I can work everything out I will be going back to Arkansas but until then I want to do whatever I can.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank-you for all the great ideas!! I am going to email all my siblings right now and tell them to email pictures and to write a letter or whatever they would like to include in a scrapbook for him. I have four siblings and there's 7 grandkids and 4 great grandkids so it should make a nice scrapbook. It will cost an arm and a leg to ship it (they live in a rural area) but it will be worht it!! Thank-you so much!!!

I'm so sorry.

When my step father was dying, his daughter from across the country visited and went out and got him a sleep mask, a pillow topper for his bed, a super fluffy pillow, etc.
Maybe a small radio, new CD, book?

My dad was in the hospital for years as well with leukemia. He enjoyed a chess board, his was magnetic, so he only played one side and the computer played the other side. He had playing cards, brain teasers like cross word puzzles, sudoku, magazines. Books on cd is a great idea b/c they are often too tired or weak to sit and read. Also, nice slippers, a robe, chap stick... all good things in the hospital. We also would have kids at church and stuff draw him pictures and cards, and had family and friends send him letters and photos as well. He loved that and decorated his room with them.

I am so sorry your father is going through all of this..

My best friend also has cancer right now.. With the radiation and Chemo she is mostly weak and tired. NOO food cravings at all so I totally understand about the food.

She was given an ipad and is really enjoying it.

I left her a few different books on CD so she can listen to them.

She is starting to get bed sores on her heels from sitting in a recliner so a nurse suggested a nice piece of sheeps skin to help.

Her husband purchased a new TV so a friend gave her a netflix subscription.

Acupuncture and massage is also soothing to her. She calls to schedule each week depending on how she feels.

Bird feeders outside of his windows could be nice.. also a squirrel bungie.. You hang it up place a corn cob on it and watch the squirrels go crazy!

Just calling him and letting him know you are thinking about him is probably the best.. He knows you have a family and will be there when you can.

I'm sorry your father is ill.

My dad is 86, in the last stages of kidney failure, and tomorrow he goes to the Cancer Institute to find out if he has leukemia. If he does we will begin hospice soon, as his primary physician, his kidney specialist and his urologist have all said his kidneys cannot withstand chemo or radiation.

The things he loves most are old pictures of the family, cards and visits. We scanned hundreds of photos and have made him collages, given him voice recordable cards (Hallmark, I think) and just talk to him, in person or on the phone when he's in the hospital, and since hospitals don't have much room for "stuff" we try to keep it special and to a minimum. Basically, they want to know you care.

You got some great ideas. I'll add only one- PJ pants. When my dad was in the hospital (also with lung cancer), we got him pj pants to wear with his hospital gown. That way he could walk aroud if he felt good, but also stayed warm and comfortable. Best wishes to you and your family!

When my mom was in the hospital for treatment of ovarian cancer, my sister bought her an Ipod and we all got her Itunes cards, she loved it. She used it during her chemo treatments to help take her mind off of the chemo.

My dad had a lot of time in hospital with cancer too. We brought him a laptop and DVDs that he could watch. He had a brain tumour and the first thing to go was his writing and hand control. So what did I get him when he went into hospital? A massive book of crosswords. What an idiot!

I am sorry to hear about your father. I would think that he might enjoy some hand-drawn pictures from your kiddos-- or a video recording of you and your family telling him how much you love him or what you love about him etc. I think that would be super personal and very much appreciated. Best wishes and hope you are able to see him soon.

What about a massage?
A CD or DVD of your family telling funny stories or jokes?
