Would anyone recommend giving vitamin drops to an infant? If you do, which one would you recommend (Gerber/ Enfamil). My 9 month old is a fussy eater, he does drink about 26- 30oz of formula per day though. Thanks for your help.

He should be getting his vitamins from the formula, if you add in the extra vitamins it could cause constipation with the extra iron. I would ask his Dr before adding them.

As a dietitian, i gave my son liquid vitamin in his formula when he started eating table food b/c his formula intake decreased. And when i switched him from formula to whole milk, i began to give him the liquids vitamin by mouth with his biggest meal of the day, usually dinner for him
hope this helps

Talk to your pediatrician before you give your child vitamins! Let your son's doctor decide if he needs vitamins -- he may be just fine with what he's getting from the formula.

Hi Ann,
My Dr prescribed vitamin drops for me to give my daughter when she was little. She was actually on vitamin drops when she was a newborn. So no it's never too early to give them vitamin drops if your 9 month old isn't getting enough nutrients from the formula. Hope this helps. Happy New Year.

Ann, 26-30oz of formula is great for him. Formulas are usually made to be very vitamin packed. My pediatrician says you can give too many vitamins but they will usually come out of the body on there own. Even giving him diluted juice he can obtain vitams so I wouldn't go the vitamin drop route unless you really wanted to or thought he may not be eating enough combined with not drinking enough.

My Ped told me to give my daughter vitamins because she is a breastfed only baby (vitamin D does not come across the breast milk). I would talk to your ped first before giving vitamins. They aren't cheap. I think I paid $8-$9 for a small bottle of the Enfamil vitamins.

Infants only need vitamin drops if there are taking less than 17 ounces of formula per day (this is according to my ped.)

If your childs DR isn't concerned about it then I wouldn't worry. As long as he is getting plenty of formula then he is getting all the nutrients he needs. About the only time you need to start thinking about giving vitamins is when they are totally on talbe food and extremely picky eating.

My docs always said not to give them as infants since they get all they need from formula. I really can't see how it would hurt though... but I'd talk to the doctor and make sure you know the correct dose.
