Gluten-free Snacks for a Birthday Party?

Hello, mommies! I will be hosting a birthday party for my daughter soon and 3 of the kids who are coming are autistic and their moms have cut gluten out of their diets. Besides fruit and veggies, what are some snacks I can serve that are gluten free? And what do I do about the cake? My MIL wants to buy it for us from a grocery store bakery. Do they make gluten free cakes?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

What can I do next?

You are so considerate and thoughtful! My son is also on the diet and it has helped a lot. First, check with the mom's of these children because they may already have some gluten-free casein-free (GFCF) cupcakes in the freezer waiting to take to the next birthday party or they may have already purchased the mix or all the ingredients to make up a batch just before the party. And they probably already have planned to bring an assortment of safe snacks that for their child to eat at the party.

If they don't have any plans on bringing their own legal cupcakes, then you can always purchase the Cherrybrook Farms cake and frosting mix from Whole Foods (make sure that it says GFCF on the front!) and make a batch for them if you are so inclined. They are easy to make and are very yummy. And you can also have your bakery birthday cake as well for the other kids who are not on the diet.

Also, over in Woodland Hills is a place called GF Meals (part of Your Dinner Secret) that makes everything that a child on the diet could ever want and everything that we have tried so far have been just awesome. Their website is www.gfmeals.com and you can order on-line and they can ship it to you.

As far as snacks go, here's a link from www.talkaboutcuringautism.org for a list of GFCF food and snack options that can be purchased at most grocery stores:

Again, I want to commend you for being so thoughtful and also for just being a good friend and setting an example for your children about what kindness, tolerance and inclusion are all about. Keep it up!

Wow! What a considerate thing to do! It's hard enough as an adult to attend parties and not eat. I know it's tough to figure out the "rules", but your effort will be so appreciated by those kids and their mommies!
You'd be surprised to find that there is a great deal of junk food that is GF. It's sometimes harder to find healthy stuff! Some ideas for GF snacks - Whole Foods have GF pretzels that are quite good. Costco has some nut mixes that my kids and I really like - Mrs. May's is the brand, I think. They are slightly sweetened clusters of different nuts. Vons and Sprouts sell GF rice crackers you can top with many different things. Fritos and many tortilla chips and salsas are GF as well. Just be sure that you don't have foods that aren't GF being dipped in as well. While you obviously don't want to overwhelm them with sugar, most candies are GF.
Vons has a GF yellow cake mix that is really good. Check out their health food aisle and you'll find a fair amount of GF stuff. I recently heard that Sprinkles sells GF cupcakes. Don't know if they are GFCF or not.
Good luck!

Hi T.,
My friend went to a bakery in Culver City to get her sons a gluten free cake. Here is the web site: http://www.sensitivebaker.com/
The cake was very good!

Jimbo's or Whole Foods might make a gluten free cake. If not, I just made one a couple of weeks ago and it was delicious! I actually didn't do a cake but mini cupcakes. I got the mix from Henry's. They have gluten free snacks there. Costco has Clif fruit ropes, they are gluten free - kind of like a fruit snack. Just look around, you may be surprised to find quite a few gluten free snacks/foods - I think/hope it is the direction our food is going!

Best wishes,
M.
