Hi! I am looking to get my father a new set of kitchen knives for Christmas. I am finding lots of brands of varying prices. Any suggestions of a good brand? I am looking to get a starter set of 3 to 5 knives for under $100. (I am talking about knives used for cooking - not steak knives or knives you would set a table with.) Thanks!!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I had no idea so many people loved their kitchen knives! I landed up going with the J.A. Henckels from Macys. With a coupon I had - I was able to get 4 knives and sharpener for about $140. Thanks again for all the help! I am sure my Dad will love them!

I love the knives that Pampered Chef sells. They have forged cutlery and stamped cutlery. I love the forged and you can get 2 knives for around a $100 and a lifetime guarantee.
I used to have Chicago cutlery - they don't hold an edge when you sharpen them - they are cheaper, but they don't cut well. I have one Henkel's knife - it is fabulous - but was very expensive.

I like the grip of the Rachel Ray set and I love the paring knife she makes!

I have also loved the Wustof line, that is solid metal. I think a singular chefs blade is also a very nice gift. Wustof is the premier line of German blades made by Henckel. ANY chef would love and appreciate such a thoughtful gift from this maker!

M., there are two types of chef knives: forged steel and stamped steel. Stamped steel is the cheaper of the two, but still very good. The best brand of stamped steel is Chicago Cutlery. I think you can find sets that include a knife block in the $100 range. Also consider getting a knife sharpener, unless you know how to sharper knives on a sharpening stone. The forged steel knives are more costly and include the high end german and swiss brands. When looking for knives make sure to hold them in your hand and practice cutting moves. You want the knife to feel balance and controlled. Good luck.

Though we only have the steak knives, J.K. Henckels makes a block set out of the same Eversharp design. They are incredible. Our steak knives are almost 10 yrs old and just as sharp as the day we got them and we use them everyday. Here's the block set that BB&B sells. It's reasonably priced, cheaper than other stores sales even.

My chef husband and I like JA Henckels. cutleryandmore.com has great prices. Right now they have a 6 piece Professional S series set for $130 which includes 3 knives, the block, kitchen shears and a sharpening steel. Or, a 7 piece Twin Signature series set for $120 which includes 4 knives, block, shears and steel.

Before I was a SAHM I was a restaurant chef. Most students at culinary schools are provided with a knife set, and it is almost always 'Chef's Cutlery' brand. I have a full set of these knives from school plus an arsenal of Wusthof and Japanese specialty knives. Although I slightly prefer the handles on my Wusthofs and the blades on my Masahiros, they are roughly 3-5 times the money compared to an equivalent Chef's Cutlery knife. The Chef's cutlery knives hold up extremely well and are very comparable to these much more expensive brands. I would highly recommend them if you don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars. You do not need a full set. I find that more than 95% of my knife work requires only 3 knives - a good chef's knife (6 to 9 inches in blade length depending on what you are comfortable with), a paring knife, and a serrated bread or tomato knife. You cannot always find Chef's Cutlery in the cooking shops, so I have included the website for you:

I second what Sherri said about Cutco. My neighbor recommended them to me. (She has used this brand for years... she's almost 70 yrs. old.)I only bought one for now because it cost me about $55. I've had it for a year now and I really do love it. Just be careful... I wasn't used to such sharpness at first!
You can buy some of their knives in pearl white or black.

Cook's Illustrated (a non-commercial magazine which features product testing and rating) recently recommended two chef's knives. One cost around $150. The other cost around $25. It was the Victorinox Fibrox 8-inch chef's knife. It's on my Christmas list, but I haven't used it. Don't forget the sharpening stone or steel.

Wusthof Trident are very good knives but you will pay for it. More reasonable but still good are Chicago Cutlery. Cutco knives are great but YIKES super expensive.

Get Henckels or Wusthof. They are pricey, but the best and will last forever if properly cared for and sharpened.
