I use the one the Bridgette liked to from Sweet and Savory life. It's divine. The salt makes all the difference.
I was going to buy a cake for my sons' birthday, but my daughter wants to make her brothers a cake. Perfect. I bought Sesame Street Candles, but I still need to lay the base for the cake. I would also buy icing, but I thought it would be fun for my daughter to make the icing, and I want to decorate the cake too, so it's probably cheaper to make my own, then to buy multiple frostings.

Some may think this is horrible LOL I never give out my recipe and EVERYONE loves my cakes ;) I have even made some for 50th wedding anniversaries and all sorts of big occasions for friends and family ... Even one shaped like a louis vuitton purse! So here it goes this is my recipe
3 sticks butter softened
2lb bag confectioners sugar
pure vanilla
heavy cream, half & half, milk.. whatever you have on hand
mix butter and approx 1 tablespoons vanilla, more can be added later for more flavor. sift in the sugar approx 1-2 cups at a time.. keep tasting until you get the sweetness you want add a splash of milk or cream to thin it out a little if needed and if you need some more vanilla as well. Thats it .. Hope you try it/like it and good luck!!! :)
As a former baker at a major grocery store, just thought I would let you know that you can go into any of your favorite grocery stores (that have your favorite frosting or cake) and just buy the frosting or the cake part...and then go home and assemble it yourself, just an FYI. You can also but the pastry bags or the fillings, just about anything! Just tell them what size cake you are making and they will get you the right amount of what you are looking for!
I use this as a 'cheat' all the time. It is still fun for the lil' ones to frost the cakes! I have one store that I think has better 'cake' and another has better 'frosting'! Ha!
I honsestly look on the back of the confectioner's sugar box, and they usually have the buttercream frosting on it. I make it a lot, and it's really good! Make sure to use whipped or heavy cream not half n half!
1 cup butter
3-4 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla (or almond)
1-2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
This is the one I use more often than not when I need a buttercream.
I pretty much use CC's recipe...but also add a dash of salt..and only use Mexican vanilla extract...
People have requested icing shots for some of the parties I have catered...
the recipe should be on the box or bag of whatever powdered sugar you buy
Here's a link to the basic buttercream frosting that I use:

But for something truly delicious, I use peanut butter fluff frosting (on chocolate cake is oh so fantastic!!) Link:

I bet CC's is good! This is my chocolate go to:
6Tablespoons butter softened
Hershey's cocoa - 1/3 cup for light flavor
1/2 cup for med. I use this.
3/4 cup for strong
2 2/3 cup confectioner's sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream the butter with mixer. I mix the cocoa and sugar then add it to the butter a bit at a time with the milk to help it mix. Careful! The sugar mixture will fly everywhere! Ware an apron! Better yet, buy her one for her birthday!
Have fun!
