How much do you think is appropriate for an 8th grade and high school graduation? It is for my cousins kids. I was thinking $50 and $100? But im not sure what the norm is. What do you think?

What can I do next?

I don't give 8th grade graudation gifts. They didn't graduate. They moved up to 9th grade. For HS, it would depend on who it was. Cousin's kids $50 to 100 would be good.

My daughter graduated from college a couple of weeks ago, my brother gave her $200 but that's his niece and it was college.

Sounds good.
The best amount is the amount you can afford!

8th grade? Nothing. We only give money for HS or College. $100 is a good amount.

Sounds very generous so I assume you are close to the kids. 8th graders don't "graduate" really so I don't think it's as big a deal - and you are setting them up to expect a lot more at high school and even more at college. So be careful what precedent you set.

My son never got that much from anyone in the family so it depends what your family's customs are and what your financial comfort level is. If you have children and expect your cousin to reciprocate, be sure you aren't setting the bar too high for her.

in our family we do an 8th grade graduation. kids have always gone from one school to the next so it is a graduation. but it is not on the level of a highschool grad party. it is only family. and usually with exception of grandparents they get maybe $25 in the envelopes. grandparents always gave more. highschool grads we give $25 to friends $50 to really close friends and $100 to family members.

I was thinking more along the lines of:
8th grade - $10 - 20 gift card to Game Stop
HS - $20 - $50 cash depending on how close you are to them.

Generally, I don't give money unless I don't know someone. Even when I do, I usually give a gift plus a little cash. It may be that most of my friends and family are in more rural areas (not same cost of living as Chicago area), but I tend to spend $30-75 for high school graduates depending how well I know them or relationship to them. More than that for a college grad and no more than $25 for 8th grader. I hope I'm not being cheap, but I have kind of thought from others friends/family that was kind of the norm for their areas.

Typically, for an 8th grader, I would stick to a small gift of some type. The closest I'd get to cash is an itunes gift card or movie gift card. For the highschooler, I might do a combination of gift cards (itunes, gasoline, Starbucks Target) or a gift. My best friend's daughter adored a small Coach clutch I bought at the Coach outlet for about $40 and talked nonstop about it. When my cousin's daughter graduated last year, my mom and I together spent about $100.

I have given all my nieces and nephews $50 for HS graduation, nothing for 8th. That's the norm in our family. If you feel obligated to give something to the 8th grader I would suggest $25 or a gift card in that amount.

My siblings and I collect $100 per niece or nephew that graduates from high school. 8th grade graduation I would think $30, and high school, if I was doing it alone, I would go $50. If they were for my nieces or nephews.

8th grade - not a penny, maybe a card but seriously we even told our own daughter who will be in 8th next year that we aren't giving her anything and not even going to the stupid promotion night unless she is speaking at it.

High school - $100
College - $100 and a meaningful gift perhaps

I think you're right on the mark.

And about 8th grade, I live in a neighborhood where nearly everyone goes to Catholic school and have been together every since kindergarten. At this point, they all separate and go to different schools. In my neighborhood, they typically split up and go to one of ten different public or private high schools. In that case, I think an 8th grade gift is ABSOLUTELY appropriate because they really are graduating and moving on to a completely different chapter in their lives.

I have found that 8th grade graduation in the Chicago area is much more common than in some other areas of the country. You should give a gift amount that you're comfortable with and you can afford. If you're relatively close to these kids, I think $50 is appropriate. If you're not very close, do more like $25.
