I have a foster child that just turned one on July 22 and I am not sure what to do with her hair. They don't know who her Father is and she is really light skinned so we think she might be mixed plus her hair is a mixture feeling of soft curls and then the more dryer typical hair. Her hair is short all over her head and really really curly. It itty bitty tight curls if you weave your fingers through her hair to her scalp and then her hair is really thick with soft curls on top and on the sides and it feels like my hair if I feel the ends. The back of her head is just starting to grow in from where she lays on it to sleep. I know that you do not wash it everyday and I put baby lotion meant for her hair. The problem is I can only get a small pinch in the back to clip a bow to. Is there anyone out there that can teach me how to braid her hair or any styles since all I know how to do is a pony tail and a French braid which is not what she needs. Thank you. L..

What can I do next?

L. first of all congrats on the adoption....i know it will be all worth it. first of all a little about me, my name is N. and my husband is mixed (more black than white) my son who is turning 6 in sept has nice hair when it gets long it gets curly...my daughter on the other hand has my hubby's hair but not as kinky just curls....i was told to put her hair in several pony tails (platts or something like that) that will make it grow and i put a moisturizer on called Pink you can get it at walmart.....and i also use a detangler (you can find in the baby section at walmart) to help with the combing....my daughter went from "i hate her hair" to i love the ringlets...good luck keep me posted and i hope all goes well...

Hi! I am the mother of an eight month old bi racial little boy. He has the same kind of hair as your little girl. I can't help with the braiding question, but I do find that using Baby Love childrens hair product in hair works great. They sell it at Wallgreens. Its designed for African American children's hair. I use a little on his hair when its still wet and just let it soak in. Takes a while to absorb. Than I don't comb through. That way his curls stay beautiful instead of getting frizzy. Hope this helps some. Congratulations on your Daughter!

Hi L., I first want to say that I think I is great that you are adopting a child. I would love to help you if you need some help. I have a two year old son. He has losts of hair for a boy and it is really hard to maintain. My mom usually does his hair in french braids but I have learned how to do it myself and I am really getting good at it. As for your little angel if you do know how to french braid I would put small one all over and make sure you wash her hair maybe once a week and buy some hair grow grease and make sure you grease her scalp all over. This help her hair to grow quickly. For our type of hair french braid are what you need to make it grow so that you can do all the real cute does later. Rubber band will make it brake off and you don't want that. If you have any other questions are if you like to see if I can do anything just let me know. Good Luck, D.

Hi L.:

I have 3 mixed children. 2 boys and 1 girl. My boys hair is more like mine (white) but my daughter's is like her father's (black). It is more coarse but with tons of curls. We use PCJ Pretty-N-Silky / They have conditioners, shampoos, and moisturizers. You can find these products at any store (Wal-mart, Target or Grocery stores). If you need any help let me know. I live in St. Charles but would be more than happy to help in anyway. My sister-in-law braids my daughter's hair and I have asked tons of questions regarding her hair. Let me know if you need anything further.

Hi L. I am a mother of a biracial child as well as a sister to one. You are describing my sisters hair to a T. Best thing to do for it is comb it out went and style it in braids or pony tails while its still wet. Use lots of conditioners. The leave in are great. Pony tails will work jsut fine as long as they are pulled tight and braided tight. That is exactly how my sister wore her hair for the first few years. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
