I am living in Grapevine and I'm new to the area. I have a black spot on my shoulder that I need to have looked at. I don't have health Insurance. But I can't hold off any longer and I need to have this spot looked at. My husband thinks it might be Melanoma. I need to know what are the facilities for Tarrant county. What is the best place to go in Tarrant County. Are there clinics, hospitals. I just don't know what's here and I don't know where to look. If you can also send addresses and phone numbers. That would be very helpful.

What can I do next?

Dear D. W,

I think Baylor Grapevine will see you, if you go to the emergency room. That's the closest hospital to you. If that doesn't work, go to John Peter Smith in Fort Worth. It's a longer drive, but I'm almost certain they will see you.

Please don't wait. The spot sounds serious.

Call JPS and ask to speak to a financial screener if you think you might qualify for low income medical care. If you do not qualify, but still want to use the County Hospital ER, go early in the morning. JPS is very good, but the wait time is ridiculous. They seem to hustle in the morning starting at 8am. If you show up in the evening, you will be there all night because all the Dr.'s go home at 8pm. I found this out the hard way in April. If you can qualify for the JPS Connection, and show up at the various clinics they send you to, the wait time is MUCH shorter. Good luck!

D.,

I found Dr. Nguyen who is located in Tarrant County several years ago. His phone number is 817=468-3131. I think they are still located off of Matlock. Their office is wonderful. Very friendly people. I had two moles removed and tested to make sure there were no issues.

Dermatologist Dr. Bond. He is here in Grapevine.

I'm not sure about the insurance part, but it would be worth your time to call his office and see what they say you should do. Hopefully they will see you and work out payments or something. Good luck, the best thing to do is don't let it go. If it is something then they can help you better if it is early.

You might want to give Baylor Grapevine Hospital a call...they do free skin cancer screenings once or twice a year. I'm not sure what time of year they usually do them, but maybe you'll get lucky and one of them will be coming up very soon.

Hi D.,

I can't help with the insurance information, but my mother also does not have insurance and has had various skin cancers. She found a product on the internet that only reacts when there is a skin cancer and it "eats" it away. We later found out it does the same thing as the stuff they use at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The product itself is inexpensive and if you are interested send me a message and I'll get you the product information. It has solved her problems...can't make any promises to you, but it worked for her.

Good luck! A.

D.,
Being a Tarrant County resident you may qualify for services through the county health system through John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital in Fort Worth. It is base on your income. You have to call and make an appt. to get "qualified" and then if you are approved they will schedule you an appt. Good luck and be patient because it is a VERY SLOW process. Hope everything turns out well. Take care.

Hey D.- I am from NJ-here three yrs now and the only GP that I would consider is Dr Drake- He is right there in Grapevine- North Country Family Practice ###-###-####-see HIM not nurse assistant-Tell him D. Sansone sent you!
He takes care of my whole family- DO NOT go to Care nows if you do not have to . I knwo three people that Have been misdiagnsosed and that are so snotty- they only mean people I have come in contact with.
Baylor is one of the best hospitals around they are rt there in Grapevine as well- but He can probably channel you to the proper palce if there is any need for concern. You are smart to get it checked out.

Hi D.

I am experienced in the Melanoma department - though I am uncertain about not having insurance, I do know that there was a program - www.skincancertakesfriends.org where you put in your zip code and find a Dr in you area that does free skin cancer screenings. It was in the Month of May however I checked the site and it seems to be a program throughout the Summer. It is promoted my Marcia Cross - a Melanoma Survivor and Oil of Olay. Please dont hold off on something like this. I have had three surgeries and done chemotherapy from Melanoma and it is NOT something you want to wait around on. If I had waited another month or two I wouldnt be here today. It was already in one lymph node by the time I had the first surgery so I had to have my neck dissected and do a rigorous - THREE TIMES A WEEK FOR A YEAR - chemo to be sure there wasnt a stray cell or two in my body. All while having three young babies at home. Please please try the website, or call around - I heard JPS takes their time, perhaps the GP someone recommended on here could refer someone who would work out a payment plan? But dont wait. Whatever you do, dont wait.

A lot of times, if you tell a doctor that you are self paying, instead of using insurance, then they will give you a discount. We were without insurance for a few months, and my son's pedi took off 25% for self-pay.

Good luck! I hope it turns out to be nothing.

Parkland hospital has various community clinics all over Dallas county for people who don't have health insurance. Check with JPS Health system in Tarrant county to see if they have any similar clinics. You can also try calling 211 and asking them for a referral (this is a free referral service for all of Texas. You just tell them what you're looking for and your zip code, and they should be able to tell you about agencies in your location). Also, Planned Parenthood provides health screenings and tests for little or no cost, depending on your financial status. Try contacting your local PP location and see if this is something they can do.

I would do as the other poster said and let the doctor know you're paying cash and see what rate they give you.

Dr. Lucy Li in Coppel on Bethel Road is very good or you could see her PA - Cheri.

There are lots of free skin cancer clinics.

I've had a melanomma and wouldn't want to diagnose one, but I can tell you that it's not the color that identifies it as much as the irregular shape of it.

This is what I'd look for..... Not a circle. Not all one height. Fades to reddish. Suddenly appeared. And if you have blue eyes, you are more likely to have skin cancer than non-blue eyes.

If you still can't find someone next week, let me know and I'll call a friend of a friend or a friend, who is a skin cancer doctor.... but he's over an hour drive from here, so try to find someone locally.

Here's a link to the JPS clinic in Bedford. You can also search around if another would be closer. The website breaks down all that JPS offers as well. Don't wait, have that spot checked as soon as possible.
