My daughter threw up all over her crib in the middle of the night!! It got all over some of her stuffed animals, it stinks horribly-can the stuffed animals be thrown in the washing machine without horribly ruining them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks everyone :)
washing machine on hot worked, she doesn't have many stuffed animals-so luckily the only one that got malformed was the lions mane & that's because i dried it on high-oops! she recognized him immediately & called him "roar" in a lion voice-so he looks the same to her-lol-that's all that matters!!

Yes, most can be thrown in the washer. I've done it myself for the same reason. Maybe put the washer on the gentle cycle.

Most stuffed animals can be washed. When i wash stuffed animals or fine washables i put them in a net bag or a pillowcase. This seems to work great. Goood luck. J.

it depends on how well they are made and what they are made of.
If they are well made and have standard stuffing in them , no beads etc, they should be fine you just have to make sure they get good and dry b/c they can grow mold if they don't.

put things in pillow cases and tie then shut and wash them a few times definitly on hot. hopefully the pillowcase will keep them from getting too banged up in wash. do same for drying.

Throw everything in the wash on hot and then dry on hot to rid of dust mites, ect...The stuff that can't withstand a good washing should be tossed anyway--it is just sitting there collecting dust and allergens. Hope your little feels better soon!

I regularly wash and dry my kids stuffed animals and they look as good today as when they were new. If there isn't any noise boxes, etc in them then you should be ok to wash. Been there, its no fun, good luck.

Most stuffed animals can be washed. I stick them in a pillow case, tie the pillow case and put them in the gentle cycle. I figure what the heck. If they smell like puke they are ruined so you might as well try washing them. I have two kids (6 & 3), so we've had plenty of middle of the night throwing up sessions and I've washed lots of stuffed animals. Unless they have batteries they usually do fine.

I wash my sons' stuffed animals pretty regularly. I use the hot setting and when I'm cleaning them after my boys have been ill, I add a little bleach to the wash too. For the animals that have plastic eyes, I either wash them in a pillow case or tie a hand towel around the face before they go into the washer so it doesn't destroy them and ding up the wash tub. I put them in the dryer on a low setting or just let them air dry.

I wash everything!! Yes, the animals might look slightly "different" after a good wash and dry, but if you have them in her crib, I don't think you expected them to be museum quality, did you? They will be fine. Just be sure to get them all the way dry. Only the ones with really long fur (a loin's mane for example) will look kind of "curly," the regular plush ones will be fine.

They can as long as when you put them in the dryer the heat is set to air dry or low. This way the longer fur on some stuffed animals won't melt.

i would wash on delicate and let air dry. I have done that with plenty of stuffed animals. Most look fine- a couple (the crappy carnival type) dont hold up. but, it is worth a shot

Hi T.,

I regularly wash my daughter's stuffed animals in our washing machine due to allergy issues. I have never had one ruined in doing so.

Good luck, and I'm so sorry to hear about the middle of the night accident. I totally feel your pain. :(

Take care,
L.

You could use a big netted bag you use to wash stockings, bras or delicate items in. I have a relatively large one that I used for that all the time when my youngest would wet the bed.

well, they would be ruined anyway if you did not wash them - what do you have to loose? :)
try cool water, gentle soap and trumble dry.
most will come out fine.

I agree- if it doesn't make it through the wash, it would have been tossed anyway because of the gross smell. I wash on hot and I dry them too. I usually do it a couple of times on low/med heat so nothing melts.

Poor thing. I hope she feels better.

I always wash our kids' soiled stuffed animals in the washer and dryer. I figure if they don't hold up (which all of them have so far) they don't deserve to live in my rough and tumble house hold. But I've never had any of them ruined, except that a couple of them I've had to sew a small seam here or there.

Wash them. If you don't you'll have to toss them in the trash anyway...vomit is pretty nasty.

We have washed our daughter's stuffed animals and all was fine. I would recommend that you use 'gentle cycle' and line dry. Good luck!

YES! I've been surprised at how well stuffed animals hold up in the washing machine (gentle wash... cold... with nothing much else in there). Even when they say "Hand wash." I often just wash them in cold water with a tinybit of baby laundry detergent and then leave them out in the sun to dry... they end up smelling great and holding together well! :)
