I was thinking pipecleaners or straws!
Any ideas on making a "stick bug" for a class project? We can't use sticks. We are thinking about clay, but the lets are so skinny. This class project is for a second grader. It has turned into a parent project.

Does it have to be to scale or can you go big? Why not use paper towel and toilet paper rolls for a nice, big bug. If it has to be stick bug size, how about pipe cleaners or pipe cleaners w/ clay?
Hope your son has fun w/ it!
Maybe paperclips. Unfold them and reshape. Or hair pins.
Try paper mache. You can place the coated strips on any form you choose. A styrofoam ball or crumpled newspaper. Do a Google search for the recipe. All 2nd grade projects are parent projects these days. Sorry, but you have to get used to it. Students are not actually responsible for their own work until Middle School.
Hope this helps,

Can he use popsicle sticks? Or small dowels? Or maybe toothpicks? Those are all stick(ish), so I don't know if those are allowed.
What about Wikki Stix? Those are moldable. Or maybe aluminum foil. Or maybe he could just cut all the pieces of a stick bug out of card stock and hold them in place with bradley clips, then the bug would actually have moving parts. Or maybe you could use some sort of food/candy...like Charlston Chews - glue them together with tacky or crazy glue and put some wiggle eyes on it????
Sorry, I'm usually pretty creative with this sort of thing, but I'm a little under the weather today.
Good luck!
make a stick bug out of sticks you could use glue and string to hold it together
You could use pipe cleaners. I would check Michael's craft store. I know they carry them. If those won't work, I'm sure they have something that will.
