I don't have a creative bone in my body and I'm supposed to help my son make a rainforest creature for his science class. Which would be the easiest for me to make? Any and all tips are greatly appreciated.

depends on how old he is, but I did some similar to this with my 2nd graders years ago. http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/23/c7/12/23c7... I hope the link works. It is a paper plate chameleon.

Or what about some origami frogs in bright colors like the poison arrow frogs?

If I was really struggling with this project, I would choose a snake. Use some clay or crayola model magic and be done with it. Almost anyone can roll a snake, right? :)

How about a tropical bird? You can buy styrofoam shapes in any craft store - use a round one for a head, and a larger round one or a large rectangle for the body. Stick them together by using any kind of thin dowel or a short, leftover pencil about 2 inches long. Buy colored feathers in different sizes and let him stick them into the styrofoam any way he wants to, covering the shape itself and letting the feathers fluff out. 2 goggly eyes and a piece of foam or cardboard for the beak, and then he can get a couple of forked sticks from outside to be the 2 legs & talons. If the 2 legs some slightly forward and the body/tail end is behind, it should stand up like a 3-legged stool. Otherwise use sturdy pipe cleaner legs (also from the craft store) and curl the "toes" around a 2-inch diameter branch from outside, as if it's a bird sitting on a tree branch. The craft store staff will have some good suggestions. Let the child do as much of it as possible.

Going with SB's idea... you could do any number of animals with modeling clay or playdoh even... a snake would be simple... but there might be a lot of those b/c it is so simple. What about an ant? A couple of body sections on a skewer (to hold it together) and some bendy pipe cleaners for the legs. Ant legs are hairy, right?

I would get pipe cleaners, google eyes, and some styrofoam balls/Pom poms. Then check out a rainforest book from the library, let him look for an animal, and try to create it. Give him some ideas, and maybe help him with it a bit... But leave most of it up to him. :)

I think a toucan would be fun. Bigish blue ball, with a smaller blue ball as a head and body... Pipe cleaner wings, tail, and feet.... Let him color a piece of cardboard for the beak.
