Well let me begin on Friday I was cleaning my counters and I noticed that my shirt was wet around my nipples not thinking much of it I continued to clean. Later that day I was sitting down at my computer and noticed that my shirt was still wet, curious I squeezed my nipple and liquid came out and I am positive that it was colostrums as well ( it was yellowish and sticky). I have weaned my son from breast feeding almost a year ago and my milk completely dried up after 2 months of not breastfeeding. I just had my period on the 13th of May and the last time me and my husband had sex was about a month and a half ago, and I have been taking birth control pills. So I am very confused at why my breast could be leaking. I know that it's probably to soon to take a pregnancy test? Any advice would be helpful!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I waited to take a pregnacy test on sunday it just so happended that I got my period on Friday I wasn't able to go see a doctor until yesterday though and turns out that it was my birth control pills that were making me leak. I talked to the OBGYN and she said that she'll write me a prescription for a low dose birth control pill and I told her that I didn't want to be on BCP anymore. So she said you know your going to have a bigger risk of getting pregnant and I told her if it happens it happens.

I just had my yearly well-woman exam...the doc told me that after having children it's completely normal to have discharge from the nipples. As long as its not bloody, you are ok!

You should make an appointment to see your OB/GYN to rule out the possibility of pregnancy. You CAN get pregnant on the pill, which is only 99% effective under perfect circumstances. Anything can alter the chemistry in it to fail--antibiotics, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and hopefully not in your case, street drugs. And I had my period the first month I was pregnant with my now 16 yo son. If the doc rules out pregnancy, he may want to check your hormone levels to see if that is what is causing you to lactate. Best of luck and let us know what happens!

It is ok that you still have milk! After you have a baby your body has to reacclimate to everything that has happened so your hormones are probably still a little scattered. Your hormones habe a ways to go to get back all in order.

The hormone in your system that produces milk is called Prolactin and if your body makes too much Prolactin it will causes you to lactate. I have been told by the ladies at the Mammogram center that all woman have milk in their ducts but they just don't realize it because it doesn't always nessarily leak out.

Please feel free to e-mail me and I can try to answer any questions for you. All women make Prolactin in our systems at all times. I personally still lactate even though I never really breastfed my daughter 4 yrs ago because my body makes too much Prolactin. So unfortunately for me I have milk in my ducts and sometimes leaks even though my Baby Condo has been empty for a long time.

Hope this helps but feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I will be happy to help if I can. Good Luck!

M.,

I have a boy who just turned 4 years old in april. I stopped breastfeeding him 2 1/2 years ago. I still produce some amount of milk. I think it has to do with a hormone imbalance. Some people say it is normal. I went to a doctor and didnt get much answered on this. So if you do go let me know what you find out.
Good Luck

I had this problem before I even had kids. Turns out it was my birth control pill and being around nursing mothers. I went to the GYN and they put me on a low estrogen pill and things went back to normal within a week or so. It's worth looking into.

Take First Response Test works better than EPT. My friend just weaned her son in February (he's 2), she still leaked for a month after that and she was on BCP and had sex once too and now she's pregnant and due in December.

Good Luck!

After my first pregnancy I had breast milk for two years and didn't breast feed at all....I even had breast milk after having a breast reduction...my OBGYN put me on some medication to dry it up...that was the only thing that worked for me....I do not remember the name of the medicine as it has been about 5 years...hope that helps.

It can take up to 18 months for your milk to completely dry up. But you should be checked by your doctor just to be sure that their isn't something else going on.

There can be other reasons for the discharge. Talk to a doctor and get the correct answer. Good luck with school and your physical symptom. It may be nothing.

Take a pregnancy test because you might be pregnant without knowing it or just tell the doctor about it when you go for your annual physical.

Well, I have no idea what's going on, but I would sure love to find out. I weaned my son a couple of months ago and wasn't sure how long it would take to stop producing milk, so it's discouraging to hear you're experiencing this so much farther down the line. Let me know what's causing it!

I don't know why, but I can tell you that my breast started leaking two years after I weaned my first child and well before I got pregnant with my second.
Like I said, I don't know why, but you're not the only one to have had this happen.

Hello M.,
This has happened to be before and I think it is probably best to go in to see your Dr. I recently went in for my annual exam and while my Doctor was doing a breast exam I had a discharge from my breast. She told me that sometimes it may be a symtom of a pituatary tumor, which generally are not cancerous and can be treated with a medication but if left untreated can cause blindness. I had to get some blood work done and am waiting for the results. Previously when I had a discharge the Doctor sent me for a mammogram and it turned out to be nothing. I just think it would be best to check into it and make sure it is nothing. Good luck and take care!
