Infant Homemade Baby Food - Oceanside, CA

My pediatrician gave me the go-ahead to start solids for my healthy 4-mo-old baby boy. I started him on organic brown rice cereal which went over very well. I fed him 2 tsp for 3 days and then started pureed vegs. I'm making all his baby food myself from organic produce. I started with sweet potato for 2 consecutive days and then yellow squash for 2 days. I want to make a carrot puree next, but I read that carrots along with beets, turnips, collard greens, and spinach should not be home prepared because of nitrates found in these vegetables. Would this go for organic produce also? If anyone knows the answer to that, please let me know. I would like to introduce him to these vegs, but if I have to buy these in baby jars I'm just not going to introduce these to him at this moment.
I forgot to mention that I'm also breastfeeding. =)

What can I do next?

Salve L.! I made both of my boys homemade baby foods. I also heard about the nitrate levels, my husbands uncle is an environmental scientist and lives abroad so I prodded him for information. The deal with the nitrates is this, if you see white on the carrot that is the increase in nitrate levels. If you get the foods fresh and puree and store (follow any book you like) you will be fine. It is when it is left in the fridge for up to a week prior to puree process you want to avoid. I fed both of my boys all of the vegetables you are discussing. As far as organic goes, that is great, I used what I grew and from the Farmers Markets and frankly not always organic as my Uncle -In law brought o my attention that the organic pesticides have not been studied long enough to determine long term effects on human consumption as well as the fact that the machinery used to produce organic products lets off more damaging emissions to the Earths atmosphere. I know it is not at all related to your question but when it comes from an environmental scientist nominated twice for a Nobel Peace Prize I found it noteworthy. I guess my point is this, pick the foods you think look, feel and smell the best, the greatest part of your child's diet right now is the breast milk! I am Sicilian so we live on a Mediterranean diet and lifestyle so I am all about the veg, fruit, bean, fish etc exposure! I have a 3 1/2 and a 2 year old, both boys and they eat Sicilian Pesto, olive oil with garlic, carrots, salmon, cannelini with pureed tomato,etc...all home cooked...I am a firm believer that they eat this well due to the home cooked baby foods! Bravo-ciao-F.

I breast fed my daughter up until a couple of weeks ago, and at 4 months I started making her baby food. I recommend the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. I haven't followed all of the recipes. But what I really like about the book, is it tells you when's a good time to introduce certain foods and a section on how to choose, how to cook and how long to store specific fruits and veggies. I loved making my daughters baby food, it was so easy. However after just 2 months when she was about 6 months old she wanted to eat food on her own so I had to find finger foods she could eat with no teeth! I'm sure there are tons of new books on the market, but this one was given from a friend and I enjoyed it. Good luck. ~ C.

i used both jarred baby food and homemade. they also make organic baby food too. i didnt start to feed my baby vegies or fruits till 5 1/2-6mo and started the rice cereal and other cereals at 4 months. i would suggest to mix a new food with the rice cereal because its something familiar. im not really sure about nitrate levels but i did look it up to learn about it. here is a web site that seemed really good... GOOD LUCK!!!! --

Hi L., sounds like you are starting your baby out really, We are an organic family to, well sorda, I'm not sure about the spinanch, but they do have organci baby food. When you do the csrrots, they have a tendency to be watery, so you may want to mix that with somethig else. I ave the Magic bullet, and I make baby food for onhe of my daycare care babies, and he loves it. J.

From everything I have read Nitrates are only a problem if solid foods such as beets and carrots are givin at a young age. younger than 6 months. Past 6 months babies have the stomach to properly deal with the nitrates. Plus even baby food carrots have nitrates. Check out this website it explains all about it. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/nitratearticle.htm
