Homemade Mummy costume...ideas?

Hi all,

So have any of you ever made your child a mummy for Halloween? Any ideas on how to accomplish it? I was thinking of using ace bandages? Someone else suggested T.P but I am not thinking that would work very well...

Any and all ideas/suggestions are very much appreciated!

One of my sons wants to be a mummy and the other one wants to be a ghost, so I am feeling pretty lucky this year that I do not
have to be too crafty because I am not that great at it :)

Thank you!

What can I do next?

Cheesecloth or cheap white fabric. Rip it into strips and then dye it with tea. Then wrap around and attach to some clothes.Ace bandages will be really expensive, TP will fall apart if it gets wet.

I would think that TP would rip...but if you are able to sew even a little bit, you could probably take a white flat sheet, cut it into strips, sew them together, and wrap away! Might be cheaper than ace bandages!

Ditto the old white sheet ripped into strips. They will already be aged some and you could add to that with a dip in some tea here and there. Just wrap him up over some light colored sweats and you have a great costume. Use the other sheet for the ghost.

Sacrifice tan or white sweats (for white, rit dye will make them beige... you want the slightly darker colour for contrast, and because it makes playground dirt less noticeable... one of the worst things ever is trying to calm a child crying because of "dirt ruining their costume" -it's not like it can be washed before the main event, if at all-,). And sweats, rather than something lighter, because you're here... in washington. Nasty cold weather at halloween.

Whip out a glue gun and lots and lots of GAUZE. Wrap and glue, wrap and glue.

(Medical Gauze is cheap, plentiful, widely woven, and the whole thing can be tossed laster. You can buy rolls and rolls of it, not just the little guaze squares).

For added fun (and again, to circumvent the dirt issue), spray paint (glitter spray is my fav, but I don't mind sparklies all over the house) a fine mist of bronzish color a little bit (just a little, here and there) for "age".

ETA: I really like the spiderweb idea. I'd do both... gauze and spiderweb.

My girlfriend's son went as a mummy one year. She took a white sheet and dyed it by soaking it in diluted tea and drying in the sun (so it would have that old look), then rip the sheet into strips and wrap him up. Make sure he uses the bathroom first, as it's very difficult once he's in costume.

We did this last year for my 7 year old. I bought some muslin at a fabric store and tore it into strips. I sewed some of the strips together. He wore sweat pants and a sweat shirt underneath and then I wrapped the strips of muslin around him and safety pinned them onto the clothes. I hope that helps.

You are on the right track with the ace bandages. Get the fake spiderwebs that people string through the bushes and come in bags like a bunch of cotton clumps. Start by wrapping his body up in the spider webs over top of a neutral sweatsuit like grey. Over top of the webs start wrapping your ace bandages...leaving slight spaces between the rows so that the webs poke out some and give him an ancient look. To really make the bandages authentic try dipping them in tea...yup...like Lipton. At some parts use extrmely strong brewed and othes use weak brew to set off a dingy look! You did get lucky this year! I am stuck sewing a bustle and corset on a "beautiful witch" costume...but I could have always bought it...we enjoy our mommy duties!

sounds like a set of sheets would do you. my mom did that with me one year took an old white sheet and cut into strips and knotted. the other old white sheet would make the ghost. cut eye holes and go. I am sure someone has some old white sheets or shirts they can donate. have fun and happy haunting.

Go to a store that carries fabric and get white flannel. You can then cut it into 3 or4 inch wide strips and wrap your son with that. It is pretty cheap (4-6 bucks per yard and depending on how tall your son is, you will only need 1 or 2 yards). It will be much more durable than ace, will look more mummy-like because it will be white rather than tan, and that much ace bandage will cost you a fortune. You can pin the ends with safety pins, or even use white medical tape.

Have Fun!!

I agree with denise. Ace bandages does sound like a clever solution, but are they pricey? That's the first thing I thought when I read your post was the strips of sheet idea. You could use velcro if you don't want knots showing.

I don't know how it falls in the price comparison with having to buy a sheet, but my thought was to buy muslin fabric. The staining ideas are great, and muslin is pretty cheap. Have fun!

Put some black sweats on him and then buy a few rolls of white duct tape (Walmart carries it) and then cut strips of tape and wrap around his sweats spacing a little bit apart to give the look of loose strips. That way you don't have to worry about it falling off and if he needs to potty he can pull his sweats down.

I bought a pattern from a sewing shop and followed the pattern and the directions. It was easy. I have made bear costumes and all others things.
DO you think I can sew. NO. I used a glue gun to get the feathers to stick when I made a swan costume. I used the glue gun for the pirate, the mummy and all else. The glue gun held the costume together for the night of trick or treating.

I would use cheese cloth, which is not expensive and readily available.
