How to Help Coworker Dealing with Cancer

My sister has asked me for ideas; I had only one (not so useful) suggestion. So I’m hoping you could help. My sister has a coworker who doesn't have family and is rather introverted. She lives alone (with the exception of her cats) and has limited mobility. She’s undergoing cancer treatment and has lost a lot a weight as she has difficulty keeping foods down. So, my suggestion of meals might not be very helpful to her. My sister and some other coworkers want to help but don’t know how.

What does someone battling cancer need? How can others be of some help to them?

www.lotsagelpinghands.com is a GREAT place for anyone trying to coordinate meals, tasks, etc. and a GREAT way to keep all if her friends and coworkers and family updated on her journey through this. Maybe your sister will step up and start a page and coordinate it?

send in cleaning crews! people undergoing cancer treatments are usually enervated and can't deal with basic cleaning, laundry and so forth. give her a hand with that (especially those who are okay with changing litter boxes), and maybe stock her up with ensure and pedialyte so she has some sort of nourishment even if she's having trouble with food.

Here is a list from Breastcancer.org of things a person going through chemo for that cancer would need. I can't iamgine they are that different from whatever cancer that she may have.

OneandDone posted what I would have. There's a Lotsa Helping Hands site for my town that I'm a part of and we do meals, light cleaning and give rides to people in need during illness or recovering from injury. Very easy to do, but someone who she knows well and trusts needs to sit down and say "please let us help you, it would be a kindness to us to know what we can do for you" and then get specific tasks.

When one of my colleagues was going through cancer treatment she did have lots of family support but accepted help from us in the form of hiring a cleaning service. Her sister got us the name of a cleaning lady in her town and we pre-paid for three sessions that my friend could schedule whenever she wanted.

Another option might be, if she doesn't already have one, to take up a collection to get her a Kindle Fire or some other tablet that she can use while she's at treatments and resting afterward. We offered that to my friend but she said having a clean house was more important with people coming and going all the time to help.

* Cleaning
* Shopping
* Come over for short walks
* Yard work or repairs in or around the house
* If "chemo brain" gets to be a problem, even help going through the mail and the bills! OMG - dealing with insurance and bills can feel overwhelming with any illness, let alone one where the brain ends up feeling fuzzy!
* Preparation or availability of some easy to digest but nutritional food. In our family, the key was homemade juices and smoothies to get the healthy fresh foods down. Make sure the person has a blender (or better yet - a quality juicer), and food to make fresh juices or smoothies. Or better yet - someone to make one for her daily! (and clean up afterwards). Our loved one had non-dairy, non-soy based protein powder put into it.

does your job allow you to donate sick and/or vacation days to co-workers? This can be a big help if she doesnt have much time off available or uses up what she does have.
