Not unless he has something more than a common cold. There are a few childhood illnesses that CAN (not necessarily DO, but CAN) cause problems for an expecting mom or the unborn baby, but the common cold isn't one of them.
My 5 year old came home from school today with a fever of 101.3 and coughing and runny nose. I gave him Tylenol and some cough meds and he fell asleep. I'm also 23 weeks pregnant and not sure what all to do to keep myself and little baby from getting sick. I washed my hands after giving him his meds, and after his hugs, is there anything else? I can't really avoid him even though kinda have today. I will be taking him to the dr tomorrow, should I make a call to mine as well?
it worries me a little cause my son was born with fetal hydrops and the dr insee now said most likely due to a virus I caught because no traditional cause was found. But thanks for making me feel a little better :)
Added my sons hydrops were NOT DNA related, that's why the drs think it was a virus.

My 2 yr old has strep throat when i was 7 months pregnant. I was really worried, but couldn't avoid her being attached to me and taking her naps on me. I love her and she needed me pregnant or not. Doctor told me to just avoid her saliva. And hand washing is great!
I didnt get sick and no one else in my house did either.
Your unborn baby is in the safest place it can be.
It's not going to get a runny or stuffy nose or be sneezing and coughing in your tummy.
Your baby is safe.
What you need to do is make sure that YOU don't catch the bug because that will wear you down.
I could be wrong, but I've never heard of a baby getting a cold in utero.
I had shingles when I was pregnant with my son and he stayed in and happy.
Beautiful, perfectly healthy full term baby.
He's 16, 6'2" and 200 pounds. Even shingles didn't harm him.
Check with the pediatrician. Wash your hands regularly, don't touch your eyes. Eat well and rest well.
Best wishes.
Your unborn baby is being protected by your antibodies (which in some pregnant women, lowers their own immunity). He just has a cold. Unborn baby can not contract a cold or feel the effects of it if YOU get the cold (but remember to stay hydrated!).
Perfect example: When I was pregnant with #3, we ALL came down with not just the flu, but H1N1 flu. Of course, the only one who WASN'T sick as a dog was the unborn child, and he had absolutely no effects of it after birth either.
Just remember, when you're preggers, you can't take most OTC cold medicine, so if you DO get sick, check with your OBGYN first.
Hope your little man feels better!
I actually had a really bad cold when I delivered my first son. He was fine. I practically coughed my stitches open afterwards tho, it was horribly painful. I didnt take anything but cough losenges and still nursed him sick as a dog for the first week.
M. _ when I was pregnant with my first son I got the flu. Vomiting, diareah, high temp, nasty flu. I was puking my guts out...and I am not a puker at ALL. I was about 37 weeks pregnant and it went on for about 3 days. I was a single pregnant mama and I remember just sobbing for my mother I was so sick. The baby? Oh, he was fine. I also had a car accident a week before he was born. Had to stay in the hospital for 2 days while they monitored him (I was 39 weeks pregnant). Me, all bruised up after totaling my car. Him, cozy and warm in my belly. No problems.
Your baby should be fine mama. Even if you get sick. If it does make you nervous you could call the doctor in the AM. But, not to make you even more worried...you are exposed to germs all the time. Any time you leave the house you are breathing in other people's germs. Just practice good hygiene, wash your hand frequently, and you should be okay.

I think the best way is to keep yourself healthy. We all get exposed to viruses no matter what and some can affect your fetus. (Like chicken pox) My daughter and I go for regular chiropractic well visits. And I try to keep us on a healthy diet.
I would suggest washing your hands and you son’s hands to prevent it from spreading. Getting plenty of vitamin c and rest. If you are not feeling sick then I don’t see why you would need to go to the Dr. There is not much anyone can do for a virus except let it run its course.
I understand your concern. But a fetus cannot contract a disease like this. Almost anything that happens in the womb is DNA related. The placenta acts as a buffer in many cases.
It is most likely that your son contracted fetal hydrops if you had a unusually high fever (the baby has no way to cool down).
The best prevention that you can do is thoroughly wash your hands and take care of yourself, ensuring that IF you get sick, you keep your body cool...
GOOD LUCK!
I am not a medical expert nor have I taken the time to read every response but a baby in the womb can be affected by certain diseases. It is not true that it is all DNA. For example, if a woman has never had chicken pox while pregnant and becomes infected and/or exposed, the unborn baby could be at risk. This not a DNA issue...it's a viral issue. I DO understand your concern and fevers and illnesses can be scary when we think about the unborn precious life in our womb. ANYTIME you are concerned, talk to your OB. And you have to remember also that times do change as well as knowledge and research and doctors can only tell you what they know at that time. Good luck and don't worry about your baby. Wash your hands often, keep your hands out of your eyes, nose, and mouth, get rest, and eat well. That is all you can really do to keep yourself from getting sick.
You're ok and so is the baby. The unborn can't catch a cold. The worst thing that might happen is that you get a cold and have to suffer b/c you can't take the usual meds. For a cold with a minor fever, there really isn't any reason to take your 5 year old to the doc either.
Since you are past the first trimester I think the chances are much better that your unborn child is fine even if a virus did go to your baby. It is when organs etc are developing that the baby is at most risk.
I was never sick during my second pregnancy but the docs believe a virus went through my placenta to the baby during my 5 th week of pregnancy or I was somehow exposed to some kind of toxin. I'll never know for sure. Nothing anybody could do about it even if we had known though.
I've had several sicknesses during pregnancy which required antibiotics. There are much worse things to catch while pregnant than a cold, so I don't think you need to worry. If you're not sick yet, there's nothing your doctor can do anyway. If anything you may catch a cold and be uncomfortable. See your doctor then if you need to. Your baby can't catch a cold.
A fetus doesn't catch illnesses. He can't get the flu or strep throat. If you get sick, be sure that you keep well hydrated and try to avoid taking any kind of medication, even over the counter.
M.,
The best thing you can do is wash your hands frequently and ask your son to cough in the sleve of his arm/elbow. Your body will protect your little one inside you and so I wouldn't worry to much about that--take your prenatals and you will be fine! GL

You're immune system works for the both of you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor. Or talk to his doctor when you take him in. He should give you some advice.
Your 5 yo has a cold which is caused by a virus. There is nothing the doctor can do for him or for you. Call the advice nurse before taking him in so that you won't have gone in for nothing. They will tell you to bring him in if it would help.
Hi M.,
There are two routes you can go and if I were you, I would explore both. Chiropractic care is essential in keeping your body working appropriately so that you won't get sick. Keeping the spine (your God given life line) correctly aligned is like keeping the hose in the back yard straight so the water can flow through or even moreso, your electrical panel in your house, making sure ALL the breakers are turned on so that EVERY room in the house has light.
The other way is to make sure that you are on a prenatal that truly absorbs and does NOT create free radical activity. Most are inferior and just because a doctor prescribes it, doesn't mean it's the best one. Most doctors don't investigate. See if yours did. I can recommend one if you like.
Elderberry extract is simpy food and keeps your immune system strong. It's safe for your little one. Digestive enzymes, which your body should always have, will keep viruses at bay. I'm sure in Orlando you can find a licensed clinical nutritionist or a naturopath to give you specifics.
I came to my way of thinking when I was pregnant with my first child twenty years ago. The doctor contradicted so much info that I was recieving from friends and it didn't match up to the books that were written and when I confronted her she said she knew nothing other than what she told me. No explanations. Not even a sense of care... ...Hope this helps.
Congratulations on your little one to come!

For thousands of years children have died of diptheria, mumps, polio and mama stayed pregnant and had a healthy baby. Doctors are like trained dogs they can only do the tricks they are carefully taught. Thinking outside the box turns their heads to mush because they aren't healers with a connection to God. Even when they go to church it's not a direct connection to God. So they fall to the ground and give out stupid answers.
Look up Iotrogenic disease. It comes not only from giving incompatible drugs but stupid answers to important questions.
