How to Remove Cat Urine Smell from Plastic Toddler Bed

We just bought second hand a plastic little tikes race car bed. Unfortunately we didn't notice until it was put together in my sons room (and his crib had been disassembled) that it has a distinct cat urine smell. My husband gave it a shot at cleaning, but the smell is still there. Any ideas on the best way to remove? Bleach, vinegar, any other ideas?

Hey K.,
I'd just throw it out and be more careful next time you find something on craigslist. Usually its an awesome place to find things, but sometimes not so much. We just bought a swing not too long ago and didn't realize til we got it home that the tray was missing. When we tried to re-sell it no one would buy it for that reason. Now I go to Once Upon a Child to get baby/kids stuff. Their stuff is inspected and certified so you run into way less problems. I hope that helps. :)

I bought a used Little Tikes outdoor climbing cube. It must have been sprayed by a cat. On the way home I wondereed where that smell was coming from. Ugh. I ahd my kids wash it using Lysol and then I scrubbed it with bleach and soap. The smell seems to have gone away. I couldn't find the stuff I used to use to get rid of cat smells but you could find something at a pet supply place.

Absolutely go to a pet store and buy either Nature's Miracle or Simple Green, both pet odor removers that work with enzymes to remove the smell. They're non-toxic and they work. Both petco and petsmart stand by their products and provide refunds if they don't work. This will take less time and much effort than the other options; and you don't have to worry about having an icky replacement smell (vinegar works, but then it smells like vinegar).

There's a product called Nature's Miracle that you can get at PetSmart or PetCo. It's specifically designed to eliminate the spray smell of cat urine. I'm not sure how it would work on plastic, but it's worked like a charm on our carpets at home.

get some oxyclean. that stuff works on almost anything. i would make up a bucket of water/oxyclean and scrub it all over. do it outside where you can spray it and then let it airdry outside

don't you hate it when you buy something and the person doesn't tell you up front about a problem. i bought a beautiful couch from a sale once. got it home and the next morning my daughter was covered in flea bites. turns out the couch had been the dogs bed for the previous owner she had vacumed it but didn't tell me about the fleas. sigh..........why do people do that?

please let me know what worked for you. I just got a second hand firetruck bed. The smell is actually not cat pee...the people I got it from did not have cats (or any pets). After I received it, I washed it (in pieces) in the tub with bleach. All of the water never came out, and I think the smell is actually mildew on the plastic or stagnant water. I cannot get all of the water out of all of the pieces. Le t me know what works, please.

Thanks so much!

We stored our racecar bed in the garage while not in use and had the same bad odor appear after we brought it in for kid number two...we don't have kitty cats since I am allergic and realised it may be rodent pee that we were smelling. My husband had to drill holes into the bottom of the bed and we poured bleach into the holes and let it sit and then stuck a hose in and flushed it out for a couple of hours. We let it dry out on our covered deck for a few days before moving it back in. It really, really helped. The smell was completely gone.

A couple weeks ago, people were calling into this radio show and telling what, if anything, they'd found that worked on getting rid of cat urine smell. Several called in about a newer product called What Odor? that you order over the internet. It's a Billy Mays pitched product. There is an official website that sells it, and the people calling in said it worked EVEN BETTER than the Natures Miracle & other similar enzyme type products they'd used. They said it's not cheap, but they swore it completely got rid of the smell for good. Good luck!

Either go to the pet store and get the cleaner used for when a dog gets sprayed by a skunk or use a gel called pinksolution. It comes in a tube of gel and is an enzyme cleaner. Smear the bed with it and let it sit for about 8 hours and wash it off. Worked for our lovely garage sale purchase of a dresser. I wish people would be honest when they sell things that you will be making an investment to clean them.

You could go to PetSmart and try an enzyme product like Nature's Miracle to neutralize the odor. But unfortunately, as a cat owner, I hate to tell you that my experience has been that NOTHING ever quite gets the smell out completely . Good luck

Hi K. ~

I was actually going to say the same as the previous poster (Jennifer)! Do not use Bleach on your toddlers bed - it is way too harsh of a chemical to use on your childs bed. I actually am a marketing executive at the company (we are not supposed to advertise their name in a public forum) mentioned by the previous poster (Jennifer). If you would like to hear more information about that please contact me. ALL of their products are non-toxic and chemical free.

You can also look into The Bedwetting Store - I noticed they also have products to get out the smell of urine. I'm not sure what type of ingredients they use, but it is another option.

Good luck!

Hi K.!
I had to respond right away when I saw you had considered using bleach to clean in your son's room. It is such a harsh chemical, yes it disinfects but even inhaling too much of it can lead to breathing issues and so much more. I just wouldn't take the chance and not use bleach to clean the bed or anything else around where your child sleeps. :)

I am a home daycare provider here in Rolling Meadows and about 7years ago I removed all caustic chemicals from my home and shop through a company called Melaeuca. You probably have seen/heard of this company if you read posts on Mamasource. They have an amazing all-purpose cleaner that would knock out urine, smoke, skunk and in my case killed the scent of the cornish hen that had fallen out of my freezer and sat for at least 1month un-detected. My husband was amazed that after just 30 min. of spraying and airing out the basement the stench was GONE.
Whatever you choose to use, I encourage you to take a second look at the labels and limit the use of bleach or other harmful chemicals around your children and in your home. If you are interested in hearing more, I'd love to show you how to shop with Melaleuca risk free and give the solumel a try! I use it to clean all of my little tykes stuff too--it removes permanent marker and those pesky crayon marks that the children write with on everything.
Good luck!

We had a cat who used to pee on our bed. There is not smell quite like cat pee! We would pour Natures Miracle all over the spot, seriously saturated it and let it dry all the way. It didn't take the stain out, but did wonders for the smell. We haven't had that cat for 5 years, but we still have the mattress

Is it the bed itself or the mattress? I would replace the mattress if that is the problem.

If it's the bed, then you have to determine what is holding that smell. If the bed is plastic, then I'm not sure how it is retaining that smell.

I had a cat that decided to mark a spot in our basement for some reason. It took me several weeks of constant carpet cleaner and then Febreeze to get that smell out of the spot in the carpet.

There is an upholstery cleaner for the car that works great and I think it's called Blue Coral. Follow that up with Febreeze.

If the bed is plastic, I don't know that it can absorb the smell. Plastic isn't exactly a porous material. Maybe it is another part of the bed that is retaining the smell?

You can make a paste of baking soda and water and put it all of the plastic and let it sit for a few hours. Then hose it off if that does not work you can purchase a pet odor elimantor at most big box pet stores there is one but the name escapes me but it is in a white bottle with a red cap and red lettering that is all natural and owrks great

At the pet store you can purchase an item called Natures Miracle. (Its kind of costly) It is in a white bottle with red writing. It can take some time for it to work. (I had to get rid of my cat because he was urinating on all of furniture) I am suprised that the plastic would smell! If you got it with a matress and the its the source of the smell I would suggest replacing it! It could also be the supports in which it might be easier to replace. Good luck That is such an bad smell!
