I Need Hair Help!

OK ladies, I asked a question once about hair coloring and got some pretty good advice.

So now I have a question about hair style/cut.

I'm horrible at styling my own hair - I know some people are just good at it, I never have been. My hair is either a mess or in a pony tail.

I have a very wide and full face - if you saw a pic of just my face you would think I weigh 50 more lbs than I do. Lucky me!
So typically long hair is good for a full face, but I have awful hair, so growing it long is such a challenge, and typically it just looks stringy and ratty.

My hair is very fine, but I have a lot of it, kinky curly in some places, perfectly straight in others - again, lucky me!
I try and curl it, and it doesn't hold curls very well, or I try and straighten it, and it just frizzes. Not to mention straightening and curling hair is very time consuming. I've got to get 2 kiddos out the door in the morning, and myself. I don't have 20-40 min to do my hair.

Am I destined to have my hair in a pony tail forever?

What can I do next?

Try putting it up in an African Butterfly clip.
It only takes a few minutes and it's up and out of the way all day.
I use them all the time and have quite a collection of them by now.

My suggestion would be to find a good salon, make an appointment with a skilled and talented stylist and ask for extra time. I also have extremely fine, naturally curly hair (that is also thinning considerably) and I used to be a hair dresser :)

Look through the hairstyle books, find a style you like and then talk about your needs with your stylist. A looser perm might be in order to soften the natural curl and curl the straight ... so it's uniform.

Unfortunately natural curl (especially on fine hair ... I call mine spider web hair) tends to stay frizzy. Get a curl reviving mousse (I'm using Garnier at the moment, but I'm also a big fan of Frizz-ease brand products) and apply when the hair is still pretty wet. Comb or use a pick to spread it.

With the right cut, possibly a perm (you might try the curl reviver first) and mousse you can end up with a wash and go style most of the time. If you choose you can also leave enough length for a pony tail :)

I have similar hair that is just to my shoulders in length. This may sound odd, but here is one thing that works for me. If I put my hair in a low, loose pony tail then smooth on some freeze-ease serum to tame the frizzies, and ignore it for about an hour (while I'm getting the kids ready and driving to work), I can take out the pony when I get to work and my hair has dried pretty straight with a slight flip at the ends.

If the pony is too tight to my head, it gets that obvious ponytail dent in it, and doesn't look right. But if the pony is low and a little loose, it looks like a purposeful flip instead of a dent.

No, move to pigtails instead. I joke you not. That's been my 'style' for the past several years, it has enough length to look nice with my round face, the symmetry of having two instead of one is nice, IMO. And I hate dealing with a 'style', too.... really, beyond combing it, blow drying it and putting it up, it doesn't require anything else.

Just keep the ends trimmed, that's all. :) This may not have been the answer you were looking for, but after years of curling irons and hot rollers and round brushes-- I dig the ponytails so much more.... makes life easier for me.

Oh, and when I was getting my hair cut regularly, the gal I saw did a chin-length bob.

I wish I could give you advice, but I'm a wash and go kind of gal. I have natural body and curl, so as long as it has a good cut, I just brush it and then put gel in it.

My SIL wears hers in butterfly clips.

Go to a Salon, but more so is via word of mouth, find a good Hairstylist.
Good hairstylists can even exist in small "salons." Expensive salons do not necessarily have "good" hair cutters.
So keep that in mind.
I know this because I have cut my hair all over the place at many fancy salons. My hair is hard to cut, very thick and full of body and wavy. No one could cut my hair decently. It would grow out terribly. And I would always have to MAKE my hair nice or behave. I never could just wash it and air dry it. I HAD to style it.
Well, one day I went to a small "barber" place. Just in a neighborhood type place. And, that hair cutter was the BEST hair stylist I have ever had. I only go there now. And it isn't expensive like at full blown fancy salons. But she cuts my hair well, because she knows how to cut ACCORDING to my hair type and texture. Now, I just have to wash it. And air dry it. And that's it! I don't even have to brush my hair to make it go in place.
But I found this place through word of mouth.

A good hair cutter, will cut your hair according to the type of hair you have. Instead of making it into a style that is unnatural for your hair.
I told my hair stylist, I want something that suits my hair type/texture so that I don't have to fuss with it and force it into place.

G., I also have fine wavy/curly hair. I feel your pain. Even if I have time to do my hair, I have no skill, and feel all thumbs!

Great advice from Angi below. I have a great hairdresser who taught me to embrace my hair curl. I was it, towel dry, add a little product & blow dry while scrunching with my hands, or just let it Ir dry w/o product.

A shorter cut (above shoulders by an inch or 2) helps accent this the best. I don't do bangs.

Have a good stylist hell you, good luck! T. =-)

It's all about product. Ask your stylist what will work for you. Or if you don't have a stylist, go to a beauty supply store or any hair salon and get a recommendation. You can also try some inexpensive brands and experiment (Fructis is a good one).

If you want volume, get a volumizer. If you want less volume, get a straightening formula. Or try some argan oil. Of you want easy, get a scrunch spray or some sea salt spray. Just keep experimenting.
