Hair - to Perm or Not to Perm - That Is the Question!

Hello Ladies!
Well, I got a wild hair and have decided to get a perm! (I can hear some of you snickering now!) I know what you're probably thinking and you're right - permanents aren't exactly in style right now, but I am desperate! My hair has grown long since having my last baby and my husband is in love with it. I, on the other hand, do not have time to style it and end up wearing in a ponytail every day. Because of the length, my hair doesn't hold a curl for long and the constant use of a curling iron and styling products damages it terribly. I have decided to save money by having my mom help me perm it. Ha ha ha! Relax; she's done this before (never mind the fact that it was approximately 20 years ago)!

So, here's my dilemma... I am wondering if anyone has any advice on what brand of chemicals and rods to use. My hair is long (it hits my bra line on my back) and is somewhat fine. I want large curls as apposed to tight kinky ones. I am hoping it will end up being something soft and natural looking. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks and God Bless,
J.

***Update*** This is not my first perm! It’s been many years, however, I’ve had it done several times in my lifetime. My daughter has naturally curly/wavy hair and I am aware that layers will help - especially the hair originating at the crown of the head. I will be getting a hair cut after the perm. I am not afraid of chemicals and up until the last 3 years, colored my own hair for many years. LOL! I am a very brave chickadee! You see, contrary to its name, a perm is not actually permanent!!! I can live with whatever I get for the next several months and if I can't, I am not afraid to cut it all completely off!!! (I had a short hair cut for many years kind of like Kate's on Jon and Kate Plus Eight!) I am sorry - I am just way too frugal (to put it nicely) to pay $100+ on my hair - especially this close to Christmas!!! I just want recommendations on the brand of chemicals and the rods to use. Thanks!!! :>)

What can I do next?

I would really have a salon do it. Or if you know someone who works in a salon mabye they could do it for cheaper at home. When you are putting chemicals like that on your head you don't want to play around. Its kinda like dark brown hair going blonde. You don't wanna do that at home or you end up with flaming orange hair!!! If you really want it done, I would have it done professionally!!

Have a blessed day!!

I agree with the advice to go to the salon. I have been having the same delema with my hair. It is getting longer and lately I have been using hot rollers. They seem to be doing the trick and giving me more body. But if yours is even longer than mine, I can see how you would want a perm.

If you go to a good salon, they can show you if layers might help, along with the perm. And you will end up with an awesome hair do!

I once asked my stylist about a body wave perm. He cringed! oh my...

You might need to put some layers in your hair before trying to perm. I have thick hair and it gets incredibly weighed down when it hit mid-back and all one length. So... the perm might not help if the hair itself is not styled well as a foundation to the curls.

And I get really frustrated with the amount of time my hair demands too.... I would love one of those quick 5 minute do's, But my hair has different ideas... it has some waves that inevitably don't curl the way I want it to. So, I ended up asking my hair dresser to cut & style it in a way that could accommodate natural drying if necessary.

Also, I decide to embrace straight instead of curly. I spent the money on the Chi straightener. Works so much faster than cheaper brands. And unlike curling irons that require to hold various sections of your hair for 5-10 seconds each, the straighteners work as quick as it take to pull it down the hair. 1-2 seconds. Something for you to consider...

suck it up n spend the money to have a salon do it, maybe get a body wave instead. It just adds some volume. I would advice against this since you will have to spend more time styling it to control frizz, on the other hand I have curly hair n wash it n mousse it n then it's good for a few days. Good luck
