I Need Your Help again.....A Little Freaked Out.....

Ok, so the other night I asked a question regarding my daughter. She had a stomach bug and it passed pretty quickly. Well, yesterday my husband began to not feel so good. He pretty much sat on the toilet most of the day. I also did not feel well, but never got sick, just icky.

Anyway, my husband continued to not feel so well today and he went to the doctor to get a note for work tonight. She told him he had food poisoning. He then told her about my daughter and I not feeling well and reacting differently and on different days and that he thought it was just a stomach bug. She then proceeded to tell him that his urine test was high in ketones and that she wanted to send him directly to the hospital for some IVs and that he may be right it could be a stomach virus instead. Then she consulted with another practioner and came back and said, nevermind about the hospital, just come back on Friday. She then gave him a Rx for something to help stop him up and a sheet on how to care for himself (what to eat, etc.) for the next few days.

Am I wrong for being completely freaked out about the urine and the wishy-washy reaction to whether or not my husband needs further medical attention? He is not one to follow-up or seek a 2nd opinion. He is not a very healthy eater and lives on soda. I always worry about his health and he only seeks a doctor when he needs to call off of work, so I know there will be no further testing on his part. He thinks I'm crazy for telling him he should have asked more questions and asked why there was a change in directions.

Maybe I am making this more than it is, but why would a doctor even mention a trip to the hospital if it were nothing to be concerned about? I do not go to this office nor do my kids, so I have no idea what the quality of care is here.

What can I do next?

He is dehydrated. Gatotrade will solve the problem. Docs realized, based
on what he said about daughter, that he had a bug which changed treatment plan.

Ketones in urine can means several things but the most likely in this case is because your husband was a little bit dehydrated due to his stomach bug.
If he's keeping his fluids up (pedialyte, Gatorade, etc) he should be fine.
If he gets very very dehydrated, then yes, he will end up in the hospital with an IV to get him hydrated again.
I wouldn't worry about it.

If he is showing improvement then I wouldn't worry. There is not much to do about either other then being careful of what you eat and getting lots of fluids.

Whether he had food poisoning, or a virus, the treatment is the same - more fluids and careful eating until better. If he's worse, then he'll need to go back in, otherwise his body should fight this off. I wouldn't go back on Friday, personally, unless I was feeling worse.

Telling food poisoning and a stomach virus apart is nearly impossible. The part about the others in his family being sick with similar symptoms told her it was not food poisoning.

The keytones happen when a person is sick like this. It does raise some flags but if it is explained away by the specific things going on they know it is nothing serious. Perhaps this doc is just a student doc and is still under the supervision of an actual doc, like most docs in a teaching hospital would be.

They did the tests and told him what to do. No matter what they told him, he had a stomach virus, it goes away on it's own. He will get well with or with out them.

I wouldn't worry either. If he isn't feeling. Well by friday then yes, go back but if he isn't showing any other signs of dehydration I would think its ok. A virus can be awful and put you down for a while. My husband had a drug test and came back he had blood in his urine. I freaked!!! Doc said it was nothing to worry about??? They are docs but human too, so take a deep breath and keep pushing the fluids!

Our whole family had this. So did everyone's family in our church and neighborhood. The nasty 24 hour stomach bug that is highly contagious. If he is vomiting a lot, he is dehydrated, so he needs to be getting as much fluids as he can.

Sounds like a young DR with little confidence. I would definitely at LEAST seek a second opinion, if not forget the DR completely and find someone else. She sounds incompetent completely.

I wouldn't be too freaked out though. As others have said, if its a bug it goes away by itself. I've had food poisoning - there is a HUGE diff bw food poisoning and a stomach bug. perhaps it was just I've always been in tune w/my body or women's intuition but there was that constant nagging: this is different, this isn't right, I need to see someone, now. With the food poisoning, I had a high fever and literally couldn't move without vomiting.

If the rest of the fam had it at diff times and with diff rxns, I wouldn't worry too much unless he consistently is unable to keep liquids down. :D
