I would like to know whether any of the downtown hospitals provide good birthing experiences. I live downtown so would rather select a hospital closer by but I am interested in having a good positive birthing experience.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm going to take a look at Hutzel. I've been trying to deal with the Henry Ford System but was blown away today when they offered me an appointment in December....

Hi KL -
I had my daughter at Hutzel Women's Hospital 5 years ago and it was a wonderful experience all around - staff, doctors, mid-wives, rooms, food, etc. Babies sleep in the room with you. All rooms are private with shower. Some have their own refrigerators. They had nice chairs that folded out to a near twin for my husband to stay as well. I can't remember for sure but it seems to me they also offered rooms with tubs for water births. I live downriver and could have gone to a number of locations closer but decided on Hutzel. Alot of my friends thought I was crazy driving into the city when we have hospitals right here but it was sooo worth it! Good luck, God Bless, and welcome to Detroit!

I birthed at the Alternative Birth Center at Providence Hospital in Southfield, not far from Downtown. It was the best experience ever for me I really wanted an all natural birth.

Hi K,

Like the others, I had my son at Hutzel. I grew up in Detroit and this is the birthing hospital of choice for many people.

But of course do your research.

~Best Wishes!~

I am also in agreement with the person who said hutzel. I did not have my son there but I have heard good things about them. But I do deal with the DMC( Detroit Medical Center which consists of Chlidren's Hospital, Detroit Recieveing, Hutzel, Harper, University Health Center and Sinai Grace(other side of town)). And I have seen them inprove greatly over the years. Iwas supposed to have my son at Henry Ford Wyandotte but I couldn't make it out there lol my sone was in a rush. But I do not advice that you have your baby at the Henry Ford Hospital on W. Grand BLvd. they botched my son;s circumsision and don;t want to be acountable. So try Hutzel. And welcome to Detroit and I hope you stick around.

I would recommend Hutzel - although I cannot speak for the birthing experience, the staff there is highly trained and prepared for worst case scenarios - because of where the hospital is, they have seen "one of everything" and therefore nothing much fazes them. Not only that, but there are also high-risk OB's and neonatologists present and on the OB floor to handle any emergencies for you and/or your newborn. They also have a Level III nursery, and that is important.
