My 8 month old used to sleep all night then all of a sudden she started waking up in the wee hours of the morning! She had two teeth just come in and is generally a happy baby, but lately she has been super cranky! What can we do to get her to sleep all night again?

What can I do next?

Hi Z.! My name is L., I'm 35 and a 3rd time mom. This same thing is happening to me right now with my 7 month old son Kaiden. The other two did't go through this, so this is new to me also. I think, it's to do with teething. I talked to the Dr. about it and he agreeded. At first Kaiden was waking up 6,7,8 times a night now it's only 1 or 2 so I think it will go away once the intial pain of the teeth goes away. I wish you the best.

Give her a little benedryl on the nights that she is super cranky and super tired. Not every single night and not for a long period of time. Just when you feel she needs that break and you need that break. Those teeth are painful and that will help her get a little sleep leaving her to be able to deal with the pain of the teeth a little better the next day.

Have you tried Orajel on the gums. They make a nighttime version. When I think my daughter is teething I will give her some motrin at bedtime and put some nighttime orajel on her gums. Sometimes when she wakes in the middle of the night I will go in and put the orajel on her gums and then turn her music on. Good luck.

My daughter has always been a great sleeper except when she has an ear infection. Teething never bothered her enough to wake her up like that, although I know it can for some kids. If your daughter hasn't had any previous ear infections it can be hard to spot, and my daughter never gets fevers with hers until they are really bad. It's probably teething, but if she still wakes at night after taking motrin, it might be worth checking out. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be to have a cranky kid and not know how to make them feel better.

If your doctor approves, give her Ibuprophen (Motrin/Advil) just before she goes to bed because the dosage lasts for up to eight hours. Other than that, just love on her because teething hurts!!!

hyland's teething tablets worked wonders for my daughter when she was teething. also a dose of infant motrin or tylenol will help with the pain also. make sure she lots of teethers to chew on...my daughter recieved a gim care kit with included a gum massager...it had a handle and a little bulb at the end with nubbies all over. that was her favorite thing to chew on while teething. cold damp wash clothes work great also. try to avoid oragel if possible...it can toughen up the gum tissue and make it harder for the tooth to break through.

With my oldest only 1 or 2 nights were sleeples when he cut new teeth. With baby, it drags on for 2-3 weeks for each tooth. And he only has 4 so far! Even once the teeth break through the gums, the pressure can continue until the tooth pushes all the way out with can take a while. Tylenol or Motrin should help. Orajel worked on my oldest but has little effect on my baby.

She doesn't have insomnia. Your little one has sore gums. Have you ever had a tooth ache? It is just miserable. Children's Motrin works well. I would not use the stuff that you rub on their gums. I bought some of it once and tried it on the baby. He made such a face that I tried it myself. It tastes NASTY! My children liked to be rocked and cuddled when their gums hurt. Just relax she will be back to normal when her gums stop hurting.

From time to time babies go thru growth spurts, during which, they may need to eat more often. Also cutting teeth is a painful process, breastmilk has what Dr. Michel Odent calls, "feel good hormones" that formulas don't have, therefore those night nursings are serving several purposes. Give him what he needs now. When he cuts those teeth and finishes his growth spurt, he will again sleep trough the night. Giving him what he needs now sets the tone for a well adjusted person in the long run.

Hi Z.,
When my daughter was teething, I went to the Home Economist in Davidson, NC (most health stores should have it) and got Hyland's teething remedy. It worked great. It has all homeopathic ingredients, so you can give it as often as needed. Also, my doctor gave us chamomile (sp.)granules, which worked wonders for helping her calm down (not throwing things)without any drugs. Your little one can turn into someone else when teething, but I hardly remember all the hard times.....I cherish all the funny times.....they'll be here and gone as soon as you know it....Good Luck!
