My baby is 2 months old and her sleep habits are so irregular. She will stay up for 24 hours with only small 20 min cat naps then sleep for 24 hours then be up during the day sleep at night sleep the next day be up all night and the next day. There is no schedule at all I even tried writing it down but I can find no pattern. She stays up so long sometime that she gets bags under her eyes I keep the stimulation down to relax her but its like she has to be completely exhausted to sleep sometimes then it takes her longer to fall into a good sleep. I keep the lights off at night and keep the house quiet but it doesn't do any good. She can put herself to sleep and has no problem sleeping on her back but only if she is ready to sleep I also have a 4 year old so sleeping when she sleeps doesn't work I get so exhausted and then I have trouble sleeping when she does sleep during nigh time hours because my clock is all messed up. I worry is it ok to let her keep going on like this?

What can I do next?

Her doctor is the person to ask if is okay, only because they know what to check for. Assuming there are no health reasons behind her sleeping pattern, all I can say (with nothing but love and compassion) is get use to it :) My son (18 months) was the same way and still is sometimes. He has never been a good sleeper until recently and it's been so long that now I'm on his schedule and still don't sleep at night. I was never able to nap with him either, I'm not able to fall asleep knowing its only for a short time. Make sure you balance it out though. Crappy sleeping habits usually go hand in hand with crappy eating habits, so take vitamins. When I would luck out and my son would fall asleep it was usually in a position that kept me from moving much so I started keeping a jar of peanut butter and a spoon close by. It's filling, protein filled, and best of all, makes no noise when you eat it!!

If she is sleeping for 24 hours straight...WAKE HER UP! She needs to be eating every 4 hours. If she breast fed, more frequently. Do you have a front carrier or a swing. My #1 daughter didn't sleep well so I just kept her in the front carrier or swing for sleeping during the day, and made sure I fed her regularly, even if she didn't seem to want to eat. She was 2 weeks early, was VERY small...5 pouinds when I brought her home and was not very hungry. She fussed most of the time until I put her in the front carrier. The other thing you might try is feeding her good and swaddle her snuggly for sleeping. I hope this helps!

I would suggest the book "Baby Wise" - We did that with our daughter who is 4 1/2 months old and she started sleeping through the night at 2 months. It started out around 6 hours a night and how she's up to 10 hours a night. Basically what it talks about is - Feeding them.. then giving them a period of play time.. then a nap. Some days it's a challenge to keep her up after feeding but we do it. I even have her daycare on this schedule too. It really seems to give them their own routine to look forward too some times.

Wow, long link! It's called Secrets Of The Baby Whisperer, I got it from the library. I had a really hard time getting my oldest on a schedule when she was a baby and this book helped SO MUCH! You have to train her to be on an "EASY" schedule
E- Eat
A- Activity
S- Sleep
Y-You time!

Good luck, and it really does work. It made my days (and nights) sooo much more enjoyable.
