how about plain brown paper bags stuffed with newspaper or shredded paper? you could tape the ends and conceal the tape. i bet your son would enjoy helping you stuff.
I am looking to make a few fake rocks for my son's 1st safari birthday. Has anyone ever done this before? What did you use?
Thank you everyone for your great ideas! What I ended up doing was I bought some $2 pillow cases at WalMart, stuffed them with newspaper, tied the ends with rubber bands and then spray painted them with black paint and the rock/stone paint from Michaels. They looked awesome and so real! Thanks again!

I don't know how large you want, but we made fake boulders for a haunted house one year. We just carved some Styrofoam and then sprayed it with that fleck stone paint you can get at most hardware and craft stores. I wouldn't recommend this if you intend for the kids to handle them, the paint may fleck off.
***BTW Styrofoam can be a bit pricey, so we were able to cheapen it my buying some pink foam insulation boards at the hardware store. We cut and stacked pieces and hot glued them together until we had a block to carve. It was a little more work but a lot less expensive than if we had purchased the Styrofoam blocks.
Chip up styrofoam, and paint it using black and white paint mixed to make gray. Vary the shades of gray to give it depth. :) Very easy and cheap to do.
You can use the 25-40% off coupons offered at places like hobby lobby (go to www.hobbylobby.com) and I know michael's offers discounts too, but I don't shop there as often)
what about paper mache? If you google "how to do paper mache", you will get directions how how to do the glue. you could start with a chicken wire frame and then put paper strips on it to form your rocks and then paint them to coordinate with your safari theme.
have fun at the party. and remember to get a picture of the parents with the birthday boy!
