Looking for an OB in Rockville Area

I'm just starting my second pregnancy after a gap of 14 years. I'm a bit nervous and would like a doctor that's caring and able to answer questions, especially since it's my husband's first child. My daughter was born in a birthing center in NY and despite the long labor it was a wonderful experience. There don't seem to be any BCs in Montgomery County but I'm thinking I'll go to Shady Grove. My sister had her 3 children there and had a very good experience. I've told Capital Women's Care is good but am concerned about seeing different doctors each time. I'm used to having one doctor throughout the whole pregnancy. Any suggestions?

Thank you!!

Dear M.,

My sister has delivered all 4 of her children at a birthing center called Special Beginnings Birth and Women's Center. It's in Arnold, MD. The phone# is ###-###-####. (She lives in Frederick, MD.) There used to be a place in Bethesda called Maternity Center, but I believe that I heard it closed.

I had a wonderful OB deliver my second son at Shady Grove. His name is David J Zuckerman, MD FACOG. Loved him. My boys were 10 years apart. He also delivered all 3 of a friend's children. She loved him as well. He is in Rockville.

Many of the doctors at Capital Womens are fine physicians. However, there is one doctor at Capital Womens that I would avoid. Contact me if you would like more info.

Hope that helps!

T.

Hi M.:
I would highly recommend Capital Women's Care. I have gone to their Silver Spring office since 2001. I had two children with them. They have always been wonderful. Although it is a group practice, I had come from a sole practioner also. I found that all of the doctors were very likable and professional. And, if you prefer to see one doctor in particular, you can schedule your appointments with him/her most of the time. But I found that it is nice that there is no waiting around like there is when a sole practioner gets called to a delivery or emergency. The only thing is that you won't know who is going to handle the actual delivery since they rotate days being on-call at the hospital. Good luck with your pregnancy, delivery and the soon-to-be new arrival!

I heard from a friend who used to work there that Dr. Schipper and other doctors at this practice are using Mirenas and Paragards imported from other countries. This means they are not FDA approved. This puts patients at risk because coming from other countries, the product's identity, purity, source, handling, and storage cannot be verified. Using these overseas pharmacies can risk receiving unsafe and ineffective counterfeits, even if they appear the same. And the physician can save hundreds of dollars on the non-FDA approved product, but charges you and your insurance the same price as a US FDA-approved product. Please be careful and ask to see the box and insert with ENGLISH language only. If you think you had an unapproved IUD inserted in the past five years, go back and talk to your doctor about a fda-approved replacement at no charge. omg...my obgyn is the best. steven maggid of capital womens care. they have 2 offices, silver spring or rockville (on shady grove road). all the doctors in the practice are extremely nice. but with both my pregnancies being pretty complicated, i would basically only see him. and that was fine with him because he knew my history/chart best. i needed to have an emergency cerclage done and he is one of only a few in this area that is exceptionally qualified. that practice works out of shady grove hospital and holy cross hospital. it is a good idea to meet with each doctor at least once, but you don't have too. it's just so that you won't be meeting whichever doctor's on call for the first time when you deliver...good luck with everything.

M.,

The best OB to me would be Dr. David Zukerman. He is located in the Shady Grove Medical Center. I had a very complicated pregnancy. He was very patient, he was always on call and he called me back right away when I called. I also had a C-section and I didn't feel anything, he made me not afraid and now you can't even see the scar.

I had my daughter in 2004 with the midwives at the Maternity Center in Bethesda. Unfortunately they are no longer doing deliveries, but I believe they are still doing prenatal care and are using Shady Grove for deliveries. I had an absolutely wonderful experience with them and highly recommend them.

I also heard that capital womens care is very good. Its seems that most of the practices with more than one doc do alternate who will see patients on which days. I go to Metropolitan Womens Group and there are 3 doctors there, and i have seen all three, however, you can schedule your appointments so that you will see one frequently. Thats what I do, since I got really used to seeing one doctor, I just always schedule her. As for the BC, my cousin's wife had all three children, the last one in December 2005 at the one in Bethesda off of Democracy Blvd. but I think they recently closed! I will try to check around and get back to you because I know there is at least one around here.

i also had my baby at shady grove and had a great experience. the practice i go to is simmonds and simmonds (they are kinda popular in this area and at shady grove hospital). they have offices in rockville, damascus and frederick. i have been going to them for 20 years and am very pleased with their service. however, i dont think they can assure you that you would have the same doctor all the time. i didnt. i was suppose to have one doctor deliver and everything was scheduled for a friday, but my daughter decided to start to come on thursday, so i had a differant doctor. (who was also great!). but what ever gives you a warm fuzzy feeling is what you should go with. congrats and good luck! ps. one thing i did when pick a ped. was ask the nurses in the hospital who they liked, maybe you could do the same.

I have a lot of friends who used Capital Women's Care, and they liked it. My OB/GYN is from a large practice, but in Silver Spring, and they "recommend" that you rotate through all the OBs, but you're not "required" to...I usually made my appointments with the same one, because of some hypertensive issues I had. It was just understood that might not be the doctor who showed up at the hospital...you take whoever's covering. Coincidentally, it ended up being the same one...not my regular doctor...for both of my kids who were born three years apart.
