Looking for Fun Family Game to Give as a Gift

Hi,

I have a family of 6 on my shopping list, with kids ages 6-16. I thought rather than searching for individual gifts, we could give them something for the whole family to do together. I thought of maybe movie passes, but then the idea of a board game hit me. I looked briefly on target.com, but I thought I'd hear from those who have played some fun games. I saw one called "Beat the Parents" and another called "You Gotta Be Kidding", plus a few others geared toward the whole family. They like to joke and laugh and have fun together. Any suggestions? Also, for all of you creative ones out there, what's a fun way to present a board game to the family? with snacks or something for a "family game night"? Just trying to do something different and fun for a fun family.

We love any of the cranium games, we just bought 2 for my 3 year old for xmas. Pictionary Man is a new fun one, Apples to Apples or Apples to Apples Jr. and suppose to be great as well.
We did this for grab bag last year, we put cranium, 2 packs of microwave popcorn, trail mix, dried fruit, and some hot cocoa packets....it was everyones favorite grab bag gift.

What a fun idea! I grew up in a family of 8 who loved playing games! Our favorite was Pit! It's a large set of cards and a bell... the game box comes with directions for several different games to play. I remember playing "I'm a Donkey" and a game about trading commodities. Pit! is a rowdy favorite that the whole family will enjoy.

I found it last year at a game store in Woodfield, fyi.

A family game is a wonderful idea. We love them. There are a bunch of family games out there. Our current favorite is "Life Stories" and the newest one I just got for this christmas is called "in a pickle" You might want to consider a basket that has a board game and some card games. that way different ages can play. When we play life stories everyone from my mother to my granddaughter can play. thats an age range of 65+ to 5. our current card games include "Rook", "Hearts" and "Phase 10". Good luck.

Our family does game night alot. My kids range from 8-14. We have fun playing the Cranium games: Family Fun, Zooreeka (we do teams since it is a four player game and there is 6 of us), Balloon a Lagoona, regular Cranium. We play yatzee, uno or Wig Out. Wig Out is another card game that we all have a blast playing. Cranium also has a card game called Zigity. That is similar to uno but still different and Fun!

hi J.,

I've given family gifts to my sisters and their families for years now. Get the fun board game (I've actually gone on to the DVD games like Scene It. they are a little faster paced and the kids loved the disney one. Has both older and newer disney things on it) I also gave them a box of microwave popcorn, M & M's, 2 liter bottles of their favorite soda, and gift certificates for Mcdonalds. they pick up dinner, start the game and have snacks for the night. I know they've always liked to see what the new game is.

Try checking out SimplyFun. SimplyFun has games for all ages that are not found in stores so you are sure to be giving a game that they do not already have. The website has video demonstrations of how to play all the games. I'd be happy to recommend some games if I know a little bit more about the family you are buying for (ages, boys or girls, etc). Check out the website at www.shelleyjohnson.simplyfun.com

Hi J.,

Our entire family LOVES the game Wits and Wagers, from my (at the time we got it) 8 year old stepson, all the way up to my 85 year old grandma. It's kind of a trivia game, but all of the answers are numeric. Everyone writes their answers on mini dry erase boards, and then you line them all up in ascending order on a "betting table," and then each player gets 2 chips to place on the answer(s) that they think are most likely correct. The person who wrote down the answer that is closest to the actual answer (without going over) wins chips, and all the people who bet on that answer also win chips. So, even if you don't write down the correct answer initially , you can still win.

I am certainly not doing it justice, but check it out; it's so much fun!
