Looking for Reasonably Priced New Bikes in Pdx

I need bikes for my 12 and 8 year olds. I would love to go to a Portland owned store, but all the bikes seems to be $1,000!
Is it best to just go to target or toys R us? These are for recreation, nothing fancy or hi-tech. Any advice?

What can I do next?

Hi! I actually work next door to an owner run bike shop in the Hollywood area, it's Hollywood Cycling and is at 52nd and Sandy blvd. He has amazingly affordable prices and a great selection...Bill is the owner and he spends time finding the right bike for you. Also, if he doesn't have what you're looking for, directly accross the street is the Bike Gallery, it's a bigger store and a little spendier, but also has a great selection and knowledgable staff. Good luck!

Even Wal-mart has decent bikes. If you want a nice used bike I know that the shops in Sunriver sell their bikes after only using them a year or two...if you are out that way.

Kids grow so fast I would just go to Wal-mart or toys r us and have them pick out one the like.

All of the bikes my family has bought were bought at a store like Target. They have all been more than adequate for childrens' and parents'recreation. Those $1000 bikes are for advanced riders who commute to work or ride on bike trails (mountain bikes). Their recreational and business riding is heavy duty.

My hubby says to try the Community Cycling Center! http://www.communitycyclingcenter.org/index.php/bike-shop... It is a non-profit that helps people learn bike safety and other stuff and it sells used bikes for pretty cheap.

Well, they aren't brand-spankin' new, but Citybikes has good reconditioned used bikes. I bought one there for a reasonable cost and have had no problems with it. I also liked that they had the staff and knowledge to make a few changes to it that I wanted, and sold some fun bike ephemera, which could help your kids "personalize" their bikes. They're even good at helping find bikes that fit people and trying to match a person up to what they need without nickel/diming you.

You might also consider Craigslist; perhaps you can find a lightly used bike for a much lower price than brand new; then take it in to a bike shop for a tune-up and a once-over.

Otherwise, I'd try the big box stores-- Toy's R Us, Joe's, Target, etc.

J.,
My vote is for Toys R Us. They have good bikes at good prices. We bought our oldest a bike from Fred Meyer for his 5th birthday and it was so heavy that he never rode it. He would always leave it out in the rain and now two years later it has a lot of rust and is barely used. We bought our youngest one a bike from TRU and it isn't heavy. He loves to ride it. We went camping last weekend and he rode it all the time. He has put so much mileage on it in that one weekend that the training wheels no longer have tread on them. Our oldest on the other hand was ready for a more grown up bike and we purchased one at Bike and Hike. It was expensive ($160.00) but well worth it for him. It is not as heavy as the one from FM and fits him well with growing room. He too rode it all over.
When looking for a bike for your child, make sure it has a little room to grow. Make sure the child actually likes the bike and not what you like or want them to have. Lastly make sure it's not heavy.
Good luck.

I have purchased my boys' bikes on craigslist for $20 a piece! One is a Redline, the other is a Gary Fisher with dinosaurs on it, plus dinosaur tread on the tires. The Redline is more worn, but the Gary Fisher was like new. It has the Bike Gallery sticker on it, where it was purchased originally. Yes, $20! These bikes are bigger, but my boys LOVE to ride and figured out how to ride them when they were littler and they will be on them for a few more years. I totally encourage portland.craigslist.org! And keep looking, could be there one day, and not the next... Good luck! My neighbors have the Magnas from Freds or walmart and things keep going wrong.

check out clackamas cycle world on se 82nd ave. just north of clackamas towne center. i bought my son a raleigh mountain bike from them and it was less than 300. raleigh is a good brand (my husband and i have cruisers from them) and when you by from this bike shop, you get lifetime adjustments or tune ups on the bike. and the guys that run it are super cool and low key.

You might also try Freecycle, which is a group in which members offer things they no longer need for free, and others who might want something can ask if someone has such a thing. You never know what you might find, and it's all free! Wouldn't hurt to check.

Hi there,
I would look on Craigslist.com first. A lot of times you can find 'Used' bikes.... ones that were maybe used a handful of times. Also, Costco usually had good deals and a great return policy.
Good luck and happy cycling!

I think a responsible and econnomic thing would be to buy used. And then have one of those nice local shops make sure that it is safe and give it a tune up.

I have noticed that the pawn/second hand store have more bikes. With the cost of living going up people are having to part with some of there things. You may eve try Graigslist. If you are lookin for new I would check out Walmart, Target, and so on. These place have so good bikes for reasenable prices.
