My husband and I have made the decision to move and we now have decided to move to North Carolina...found a realtor who sings the praises of Hillborough. Can anyone give me the inside scoop on the town...likes dislikes, schools, places to live...places to avoid? My husband wants to move to Greensboro because it is more active and things are closer. His worry is that we'd have to travel miles to get to a supermarket if we lived in Hillsborough...Help!!

thanks D.

Hi D.

Hillsborough is a great town if you like small towns low crime rate. As far as grocery stores there are two Food Lions, and one Lowes foods. There is also a 24 hour Walmart that is clean and is open 24 hours. You are right on the highway so you are 20 minutes from Durham, 20 minutes to Burlington, 10 minutes to Chapel Hill. The orange county schools are great. We do not have a Mall or movie theater but you are so close to Durham, Chapel Hill, Burlington that have Mall. Greensboro is 50 minutes away. It depends on what you like. If you like the friendliness of small towns with virtually no crime you will like Hillsborough. We have several brand new neighborhoods with beautiful homes that will fit whatever price range you ar looking for. I suggest that you just come and look around. It is an old town. This is ACC country and people are very much into the colleges. In close proximity is Duke University in Durham, North Carolina Central in Durham, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC State, Shaw University, St. Augustines and Meredith College in Raleigh, Elon down the road in Elon. We also have a brand new technical college right in Hillsborough. I would suggest you have your realtor show you around. Oh and don't forget that you can buy some land and build right outside of Hillsborough in Cedar Grove!

Good Luck

C.

I don't know what part of Hillsborough you are looking at. We live outside of Hillsborough, closer to Rougemont and Caldwell. It is a quiet town, but has activities on occasion and nearby. It is close to go to Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The Orange County Parks Department does a good program at the Little River Park for the pre-school set and some for older kids too (although, I've never been to the ones for older kids). The public schools are good. There is one elementary school on a year-round schedule. There is also a charter school for K-8. If you go to the Orange County NC site, there are links to the schools, parks, and farms with direct sales to consumers (Upicks, etc.) OH, and Hillsborough has 3 grocery stores (2 Food Lion and one Lowes Foods) and a Super Wal-Mart that I can think of.

I live in the Rougemont area as well, only I'm within spitting distance from the Person County Line. Hillsborough is BOOMING right now....there are a lot of new developments right now and like Beverly said, there are some great schools. I'm in Orange County but cwntrally located so that I could go into town, Durham or Roxboro. The people are friendly anywhere you go, so just remember that if you do move to Hillsborough, youdon't have to live in the city limits to be in very close proximity to lots of amenities. I think you'd really like it here!

I am laughing my head off- no grocery stores! There is a super wal[mart that I love, right at 85 and 86. A Food Lion, and a Lowes. About 5 mi down the road toward Chap3el Hill is a Harris Teeter. In Chapel Hill, there is a Whole Foods and A Trader Joes. Oh, and Hillsborough, just got a Weaver St market, which is all natural and has a great bakery. Orange county is beautiful, HIllsBOROUGH IS A PICTURESQUE LITTLE TOWN. tHERE ARE SOME LOVELY HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS GOING IN. mY DAUGHTer just sold, and is buying a lot in Churton Grove, has a pool, playground etc. Kids go to Cameron Park elem. Very well thought of. Email me, and I will connect the 2 of you, she has a 3 and 6 yr old. Would love to help you out on anything you need. K.

I live with my husband and three of our four children (one just married) in Hillsborough. I attended college at UNC-Chapel Hill where I met my husband and never left the area. I food shop at Weaver Street (downtown Hillsborough), Food Lion (two locations in Hillsborough), Kroger (Durham), Whole Foods (Durham), Sam's Club (Durham) and Super WalMart (Hillsborough). My children attend Orange County Public schools and for the most part I'm happy with the education they are receiving. We are aggressive about homework and what we think are their weaker academic areas so we don't leave all responsibility with the classroom teachers. My only complaint is there is one elementary and one middle school that are year around, but not a high school. I like the small town feel, I grew up in a small town in NC, however I don't like the small town politics. Alot of stay at home mothers who run the schools with their aggressive "volunteering." Sometimes sports are a little too important. However, my children are happy and able to find things to be involved in that they are good at. I think Greensboro is too big and there are only a few select schools that excel. Hope this helps. A. B.

Hi D.,
Ten years ago, my husband and I moved from Chicago to Hillsborough, thinking that it was close to Durham where he worked and was cheaper to live there. It was a major shock to go from big city to small southern town! Now we live in Durham and I go to Hillsborough now and then to visit friends. It's become more cosmopolitan, there is plenty of shopping and even upscale groceries and stores are moving in. But it's still definitely a small town feel and can be a bit isolating if you're used to more of a city.

Hillsborough is not so remote as your husdand may think, there are grocery stores there and you are not far from others in surrounding areas.
