My 9 Mos Old - the Biter :(

My dd just turned 9 mos. She has her 2 bottom teeth (just got in July) and her 2 top teeth are now trying to pop through. She is biting EVERYTHING - including me. She has binkies, teethers, cold wet wash rags, toys, etc to chew on but she crawls to me constantly and tries biting me. It hurts! She has chewed the slats of her crib up already (as in had to take sand paper to sand smooth again) and our coffee table is a total mess right now.

I have been doing oragel and tylenol (the past 2 days b/c fussiness has now come along with biting).

Any suggestions on how to make the biting stop - or at least her biting me? Again - she is only 9 mos old.

Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Laurie - Ha ha.. Yes this is what she does. She comes up behind me and bites me in the achilies tendon - like she is trying to take me out or something!

She's biting because the counter pressure helps with the aches and pains that come with teething. Give her something she CAN bite, and if she bites you, gently pop her mouth and say 'no'.... persistence is key. She'll get it eventually! And if you're not comfortable popping her in the mouth, don't... that's just what I used to do and it worked ;)

Try giving her a frozen bagel or waffle, if she can mush finger foods with her gums... my babies LOVED that kind of stuff (and my 3rd was teething at FOUR MONTHS!!)

Wow, get photos of all of that bite marks.. she will love seeing them when she is older..

At 9 months the only thing you can do is distract, be aware and constantly place something for her to bite on when her mouth is open and heading for the "bite".. Our daughter was sometimes like this.. We just shoved things into her mouth.. Those little teeth and strong jaws could do some damage.. Maybe she needs to be placed in a walker or activity saucer when you cannot watch her.

My husband apparently was also a biter and chewed on his crib.. His mother let those bites on the slats.. She said the worst bites were on the backs of her legs while washing dishes.. He could walk at 6 months, so he could walk around quietly and surprise her.

Ha, ha, read your update, she sounds like a lion stalking you.. watch out!

Ha ha my son at 9mths bit my toes incessantly--I even posted a question about it on this site. I took into account all the suggestions, nothing worked at all. And as so many moms mentioned I really should nip it in the bud or it could become a huge problem down the line.

Well its a huge problem at almost two he's still biting. Once he figured out that the bite got reaction out of his brother, to his favor, it was no longer the loving, playful, pain relieving bite. IIt became his weapon. And IT gets horribly bad when he's teething. We are finally on our last 2 year molar, I'm praying once it cuts through the biting will slowing disappear.

The only recent thing I read online that I didn't think of trying, and I don't know how it would work with a 9 month old! But I read somewhere that a mom took a plastic tubing (kind of like off the filter of a fish tank) and made a necklace, and whenever her son started biting she'd put it in his mouth, and tell him he can bite this. She said he'd walk around with that thing in his all day long, and days he kept it in, the biting was to a minimum!

Good Luck sure hope you find something that works :)

PS I'm sure you'll get probably the same answers I did, but here's the link to my post a little over a year ago
