My baby boy is 9 months old now, his head was at 60% at 6months and now at his 9 month check up his head is at 94 percent. The doctor hasn't told us much. He had a ultra sound of his head through the small soft spot on friday, but they couldn't get a good enough images. The only thing the doctor told us is it appeared there was some fluid but it was hard to tell she said. He is having a ct scan on tuesday and will be sedated. I am a concerned father just wondering for positive and or negative stories to prepare me. I am also very worried on how they will sedate him, with him being only 9 months old and 19.5lbs. His devolopment is going great, crawling, drinking his own bottle, standing at edges of his crib and couches, smiling laughing ect. thanks

So What Happened?

Hopefully i willl be able to post on my forum again, after i post this. He had a ct scan and bone survey/xray today. They didnt have to sedate him at all like the nurse and his baby dr had said. They did wrap him up like a mummy and put his head into this tight pillow type thing. it only took about a minutes or two. He was stairing at us with the look on his face like " what the hell are they doing mom and dad" Then the xrays didnt go to hott for him. they had three nurses trying to hold him steady. never really heard him yell/cry like that. anyways, the doctor called back a little while ago, well actually his doctors nurse did, still not giving us much more information yet. all she basically said is there is extra fluid in the front part of his brain and it was good that there isnt any anywhere else. They are concerned about the fluid in the front part of his head. They sent all the scans and everything down to a nueroligist down in milwaukee at the childrens hospital. Then once they get word from milwaukee they will let us know of the next step. Any ideas what that might be?

The only advice I have is to absolutely have it done in a children's hospital, if it isn't already planned for one. Even if you have to drive a ways to do so.

The children's hospital we use(90 minutes from us) has a separate pediatric section for EVERYTHING, including radiology, apart from the "main" hospital .It was a big difference from using "big people" hospitals, in my experience. When you're with people who only see children, there is much less risk when it comes to things like, say, calculating sedation medications. They're also much better at comforting the little guys!

My friend's son needed a ct scan at 3 months. She was a nervous wreck. I don't know all the details, but she said it went fine. No problems at all and the ct proved there was no problem for her. She said the worst part is that they were required to stay overnight to make sure her son didn't have any ill effects from the anesthesia, and she was ready to be home.

My son had an ultrasound done on his head at about this age because the doctor thought his head was on the larger side. Both my husband and I have larger heads. My son was fine. Don't worry, but I know that is very hard! I am sure your son will be fine too! Good luck and God bless!

They don't have to sedate him for a CT we went through this exact thing 3 years ago with our middle child a boy. He had a 50% head at birth and it sky rocketed to the 110% by 8 mo so he had a CT scan to start...took less then 30 second and they did not sedate him. They had a cool wand that glowed lights and spun to distract him and it went off without a hitch. CT was inconclusive and he had to go in or an MRI where the did sedate him. It was harder on me then him he was 10 mo old for the MRI. I would ask and see if they can just try first with out sedation there is really no need for a CT scan. Anyhow long story short, all scans were o.k. they found him to have fluid buildup between the skull and brain in the front of his head, think it might be from a traumatic birth but couldn't tell us for sure. at 2 he had a follow up CT to see if the fluid had increased, decreased or stayed the same and it had stayed the same. So no worries. At about 2.5 years we finally noticed his head circumference starting it's own growth curve (which is what they wanted to see and looked for) it is well above the "normal" growth curve but it started making a curve! he is now 4yrs old and doing just great. Our little man just has a big head like his daddy!

Now what they are probably looking for is the fluid in the center of the brain with could mean hydrocephalus and that is something better found early they late so it is a wonderful thing that the doctors are going through this step now!!!Best of luck and I would love to hear what the results end up being.

My 3 month old's head was average/small at birth and in the 75th percentile at her 2 month check-up, but my ped wasn't concerned. I pointed it out and he said she's doing great. I have a big head and so do my brothers, so I just chalk it up to taking after my side of the family :) Hope your son has a similar outcome!

My great niece was checked for a big head. It turned out to be nothing, just has a larger head. I will pray that it will be the same with your son.

Hoping all is well. My son, who is now 3, has had numerous CT scans since 5 months old due to increased head circumfrance. My son was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Most likely attributed to traumatic birth/c-section. He is fine but has had a shunt placed due to the hydrocephalus. Otherwise completely normal 3 year old. Our issues started with vomiting etc at home. Given the concern is size and nothing else is wrong I would not worry. My son goes to children's in Milwaukee and I live in Appleton so it is a drive but they have the best doctors you could ask for.
