So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful advice. We found it on ebay much cheaper. We also plan to try other systems. I am still pregnant so I have several months to plan.

We have it and it was a waste of money. The only part of it my daughter likes is the pull out word cards. I would be willing to sell you my dvds if you still want it. Some of my cards may be missing or broken though.

I agree w/ all the moms here. My daughter was introduced her 1st leapfrog brand toy when she was a toddler. They are so educational. We bought her the Letter Factory DVD and them moved onto the word factory dvd.
She knew her whole alphabet (letters and phonics)by age 2. Always showing her words while driving, singing the "ABC" song, etc.
Until about 1 yr ago we only had PBS shows on in the morning or videos. (Einstein, Barney, etc). Now we have Dish and nick Jr., etc.
She is in Pre-K now and knows many sight words. She picks up MY novels and points them out to me. She is easily sounding out 3 letter words w/ my help also.
So fun to watch them grow! Good Luck!

I don't know the age of your little sweetie, but if at least age 3, please check out LeapFrog Letter Factory! I purchased Your Baby Can Read and truthfully, it teaches reading through sight. The better way to learn to read is learning what each letter sounds like.
My nephew is autistic and he does well with sight words as Your Baby can read shows you the word as well as what it is. For example, the word BABY. You see the spelling of it as well as a baby. The problem that I see here is that our children are not learning what the B-A-B-Y sounds like. Go to the library and check these out.
BY THE WAY, OUR DAUGHTER, WHO JUST TURNED 4, KNOWS WHAT ALL OF THE LETTERS SOUND LIKE..THANKS TO LEAP FROG AND MOMMY AND DADDY READING AND POINTING OUT LETTERS WHILE EITHER DRIVING OR SHOPPING. NO MATTER WHAT, MOMMY AND DADDY MUST TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN OUR CHILDREN. TAKE CARE!

It's an unnecessary product. It encourages parents to sit their kids in front of a poorly made video. The commercials tell parents they don't have to do anything. That's sad. All you have to do is read to your kids and instill a love of reading in them. A video won't do that. They'll read soon enough. Don't waste your money.

Try Ebay I am sure there are parents willing to sell theirs. As an educator please research this product before you purchase it. Studies show and I agree that it can be counter productive. Babies need to reach many other milestones and reading is not one of them. If you want to foster a love of reading then just reading everyday to your child can accomplish that. Basically this system is sitting your baby in front of a tv and watching videos for hours on end. Sorry didn't mean to put my two cents in but I wanted to give you both sides. Good luck!!

Honestly we have it and its interesting, we might try to use it again, but my kids have learned more pre-reading skills by watching Superwhy. They watch Superwhy once per day while I am cooking and also have a grasp of lots of common fairy tale plots. For it to work you need to watch the "My Baby" series twice a day and it is SO boring and poorly made. We started it while my kids were about 6 months and then quit and decided to teach them signing instead since it was actually useful. And really there is no reason to focus on teaching reading so early when there are so many wonderful things to explore with your kids.

I use to have it, honestly I used it a week then got rid of it (it seemed poorly made and not worth the money)... It is much more important for a child to learn the sounds of the letter and letter recognition FIRST then learn how to recognize words.

Reading to your child is a much better way. My daughter is 3 1/2 years old and she know all her letters, the sounds they make and has started reading because we read with her at least 30 mins a day if not longer.

I know you didn't ask for what we thought of the product, but please, please save your money. Watching videos for hours is not good for your baby. And so what if your infant can recognize a word on a card? How is that useful to him or to you?

If you want to jump start language development, get an infant sign language program. It's fun, it's interactive (with you and not a television set), you will learn something too AND it will be useful since your baby will be able to communicate with you way before he or she has the developmental capacity to speak.

If you want to foster a love of reading, read to your child every day. Google "How to read to your child" or something similar about how to instill a love of books and reading, i.e. by asking questions about what you are reading or seeing on the page and then supplying the answers until they are able to supply their own. I also second everyone who likes Letter Factory DVD by LeapFrog for learning letter sounds, but I would not start that until your child is older.

Congrats on your baby to be!

just want to say that you'll be very happy with all the PBS programs available and they're free! don't worry about your child's first year..it's all about physical developments and play. But my son is now 21 months and i don't know how he learned all his letters, but i think it has to do with watching SUPER WHY on PBS and playing with his Leap frog letters that i leave for him on the fridge.

and we just read to him everyday.

I bought it & returned it within a week. My kids wer 2 & 3 and the first video did not hold their attention. May work if your little one is an infant & can't walk away from tv. I even tried using it in car where they had nothing else going on, but they talked to each other etc & never watched it. Hope this helps you....

Babies and toddlers learn through play. This is why developmental preschools are the best. I didn't know this until I had kids, do some research and you'll learn all about it.

I suppose ebay or Amazon. However as other's have said research this product before you start using it. Reading to your child at least 30 mins per day is necessary regardless of any other system. Your child gets introduced to so many words you will see a much wider vocubulary.

I also absolutely love leap frog letter factory, you can get this at walmart. My son had his letter sounds down at 2 1/2 after watching this about 2 times.
Starfall.com is also good.

Again, read, read with your child. You will also see what your child is ready for, each child develops at a different pace. True reading requires maturity and some children will achieve this in preschool some at the first grade but reading, teachin the alphabet, teaching the sound of letters, making rhymes, scribbling etc will provide your child with excellent pre-reading skills.

I would love to get feed back on the "My Baby Can Read" though.

I have a set of the videos but I don't have the books. We really destroyed them. I'd be willing to sell you my set of videos if you're interested. I bought them 3 years ago.

We bought it when our son was a few months old and due to our driving a lot we put it in the DVD player while we were on the road. In my opinion i dont think anyone can really determine the effects of the product since we are not the child, so my value in it is as much as i put into using all the tools it comes with.
My son who is now 18 months, is clued to the TV for the 1/2 hour that its on and wishes to have it played over and over again.
i have noticed he has picked up the songs quite well. as for the words its hard to say. but i read to him everyday, as he is always handing me books to read and often sits on the floor surrounded by books just looking at them. Is he recognizing the words? I don't know, but it's more educational than most Disney movies or whats on TV. He also loves the flash cards and picture books that come with the package.
The videos are 2nd rate but the most important features of learning are there. like the arrow pointing to the word as its being said and read. repetition and having it said in a sentence. real life animals to correlate the words with rather than technicolor replications of the animals.
I don't regret purchasing it because he enjoys it.
all my best,
