I have a 20 yr old son who does take showers wears clean clothes and uses deodrant and all the typical hygiene stuff your supposed to do but he has a pungent odor. What can he do different to control this? I told him to put baking soda in his laundry and put baby powder on but something had to be causing this. Any ideas??? all suggestions welcome. I don't think its a medical condition. He uses brand name body wash we use all free and clear detergent due to my allergies and he uses axe deodrant. we went to only name brands due to this issue it still persist. any feedback would help logical or not.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

hes smelling better haven't noticed the smell for a while now. I found out he was taking a shower before work not after and he works as a cook in a hamburger joint. I think that was it. I washed his bedding and told him to shower after work not before. Still not sure thats what it was but I guess time will tell

I don't know what type of odor you need help with, so this sounds really weird, but try using Listerine, the original forumal, on a cotton ball and swab the entire armpit area. The let it dry. Apply anti-persprent/deodarant as usual. The listerine helps kills the bacteria under the arm that cause the smell.

it is his feet?
Or maybe any hygiene products/hair gel or anything he may use on his body?
His breath?

What does he eat? If eating only meat or starches... then it can make a body stink... and as they say, with people who eat a lot of garlic for example, they can have a "smell" too.
Does he eat balanced? Drink enough water? Brush his teeth?

Does he eat alot of garlic or some other type of food with a strong odor that may be seeping through his skin? I once worked with a girl who took garlic supplements and boy did she stink!

It is diet related trust me. Something he is eating or drinking is causing it. I know it might sound simple or ridiculous but look it up for yourself. most of all tell him to be honest about what he is eating because if he lies you wont figure out the problem. Good luck

This may sound silly but have his doctor check his thyroid levels. I have had a thyroid condition since I was in my teens. Once when my doctor totally messed up my dosages, I was extremely hypo. I noticed that I seemed to have a stronger body odor than usual. I never connected it until a couple of months AFTER my medication levels were corrected. The thyroid is involved in everything.
Good luck,
R.

If the odor is musky, then it might be pharmones and I don't know if there is anything you can do about those but you could check with an endocrineologist.
If the odor is dirty it might be toxins and you could review his diet.
If the odor is sweaty then try antibacterial moisterizing hand soaps using a puff, not the body washes.
The smell of sweat is actully the gassy by product of bacteria eating and reproducing and the antibacterial ingredient in hand soaps is stonger than what you typiaclly find in bodywash.
Perfumes never do anything about the source of an odor because they are not chemically designed for that. If you are allergic then they are only aggrevating your underlying condition making you more likely to have a seriuos reaction when exposed to a substance you are more sensative too.

Hope this was helpful,
L.
P.S.- I am also toxin sensative and have converted my home enetirly to Melaleuca and found great relief.

Could be his feet, or it could be that the detergent you are using is not cleaning the clothes well enough, or the temp setting you're using??? Some bacteria and other organisms can survive a regular wash cycle. Try washing his clothes in hot water, and on the highest dryer setting, have him take a shower and give him the clothes and see if he still smells. If he does, I would suspect some weird medical thing. If he doesn't, then at least you know it's probably the clothes, or his sweat/oil after a few hours...which could also signal a weird medical issue [I don't mean it is necessarily bad..but maybe his sweat/oil glands produce something a little different than other people?]. Also, how long does he go in between washing his bedsheets/comforters, how old is the mattress he is sleeping on? Maybe it's mold or a fungus or something?

I would have him go see the dr. It sounds like he may have some kind of infection that you don't know about.

I would have the same question as SH? His feet? My brother is almost 23 and has the same problem.. we have come to the conclusion that it is in fact his feet.... they are AWFUL... it will clear out a room in seconds... He can wash his shoes/scrub his feet and they will still blow you out of the water LOL.... not sure what causes it but it is AWFUL.... He has had this problem for about 5 years now... not sure what cures it as he has never gone to the doctor for it... But that might be something to consider... Hope you find whatever the problem is!!!

He may have an issue with yeast. Try a probiotic(Pearl) for a month or so. Also, try increasing water, he could be dehydrated.

I would go and talk to the people at a health food store. We all take probiotics which is good for the digestive tract.

My first thought was like several others have answered - it could be something he is eating! I remember my mom talking about a friend of hers who ate a lot of garlic, and would come by our house while she was out on a run.... Pee yew! ;> Also, if he's on meds or any other supplements it could make a difference.

If he's been to the doctor and they have ruled out anything medical that might be causing it, like an infection, he might consider limiting odor causing foods, like garlic & onion, which seem to seep from the pores of some people. Also, using hygiene and laundry products with tea tree oil seem to work well because of TTO being naturally antibacterial.

Hope this helps!
