Need Advice on Diaper Rash- 6 1/2 Month Old Infant

One other thing on top of all the great advise you've gotten that I've found works wonders when my daughter has really bad rashes. I have her sit in the sink and soak her bottom with either Aveeno baby oatmeal bath, Dumboro medicated soak and finally for the really bad rashes I make a soak using sea salt. That usually clears up even my daughters worst rashes withind a day or two!

A mom once saved me, so let me save you! Aquaphor Ointment, and Tylenol, the rash should clear up soon, I would say 24 hrs, but you mentioned oozing. The Tylenol helps keep the inflamation down and offer a little relief, while the ointment soothes and protects the skin. I know when my little one gets the slightest bit of a rash she screams in pain with the wipes, and then I smooth on the Aquaphor and she is immediately relieved. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear of your daughters diaper rash and ear infections. I know where your coming from. My son is 15 months old now and still gets periodic diaper rash. I usually soak him in an extra warm bath and let his tush air dry for a while, and then put on loads of Aveeno. I've tried everything under the sun and sometimes the triple paste will work and sometimes just plain old vaseline, but my best results seem to be with the Aveeno. As for your daughters ear infections, I was told by my sons pediatrician that antibiotics don't really work for ear infections and that they usually go away on there own, they need to run there course. Usually a doctor will prescribe them because they feel its what the parent wants. Plus they seem to be the culprit when it comes to diaper rash! My daughter suffered from bad diaper rashes when she was an infant. My doctor gave me a prescription for Nystatin cream. That was for fungal rashes. He also told us to put triple paste on and then put mylanta on top to coat and keep anything from touching her bottom. We used a thick coat of triple paste. At my daughter's daycare, they swear by boudreaux's butt paste. You can mix that with desitin or balmex and that works also. Change her as soon as she has her bowel movement. That is most important. hello, well when my daughter got a bad rash which was a yeast the docter medicated something but it didnt work. the best thing that i found was every time i changed her diaper i would wash her with cool water then let her run around with no diaper for 10 minutes. when i was to put her pamper back on i would use balmex alot of it a nurse told me it was good an it worked she cleared up in 2 to 3 days good luck

So, here is my 2cents. Change baby every hour or two max (INSIST that Day care does this also). Use either BUTT Paste (pricey) or Triple Paste (still pricey)at every diaper change. Stop using the baby wipes and use the warm cloth. If you are at home wash her bottom every time. Like may Grandmother use to say "soap and water works everytime" Pat dry and air dry your baby 10 minutes is enough. And this should be it... if it continues CALL the prediatrian.. Another thing - FYI! when a baby gets earinfections constantly is not fun. But, this does happen alot when the child is in day care. Infants are prone to ear infections because their inner ears are not formed correctly yet (usually happens by 1yr. on its own). So any mucus (boogies) just sits in a small puddle that never drains out creating an ear infection. Not fun for you or baby! My daughter was 1 month in day care and got 5 ear infections. She ended up having ear tubes put in and it was not so bad. Very common!! You have to give them antibiotics which are known to give yeast infections so, keep an eye on that. Don't give your child TYLENOL for her diaper rash. That's internal here diaper rash is on the outside of the body. No need to overmedicate your child. Anyway that's my input... My little one was sick with diarrhea for two weeks I took him to the doctor because it started to cause him welts that broke open. The doctor said put him in the bath twice a day just to soak his rear and put Cortate 1% on the rash. I was surprised it was gone completely with in two days. Good luck!

At the drug store, you can buy a product called "butt paste". It is in the baby section by the Destin and A&D creme. It is incredible! It comes in yellow packaging. It clears baby rash up in hours! My son has never had a rash! If his butt is a little red, I put it on and the red is gone by the time he wakes up from his nap.

This will sound funnny to you I am sure as it sounded to me when a friend recommended it to me. It is called BUTT Paste and invented by a doctor. It is packaged in a yellow box, looks like if it was packaged in someones home but I asure you it is the best thing ever for diaper rash. I have worked with newborns and triple paste and find this stuff works better that that. It has the consistency of balmex or that other brand I cant think of right now. The difference is that it comes right off when you wipe. I used it with my daughter when she was an infant and I can almost sware the diaper rash was gone in 2 days. GOOD LUCK.

My 6 & 1/2 month old had that type of diaper rash a couple times now too - our pediatrician gave him a prescription cream that worked right away on it. I'd ask your pediatrician for something and then once its cleared up just use straight old vaseline to protect the area (also our pediatricians recomendation)Also don't use wipes while the rash is present. Just use a soft wash cloth with warm water. If you can - try to let your babies bottom air out a bit between diaper changes too...I'd fan my sons bottom or blow on it to dry him off before putting anything back on him. I also changed his diaper constantly when he had the rash - I wouldn't wait at all b/c it would irritate his bottom even more.

I use plain old vaseline. My daughter used to get severe diaper rashes and is allergic to all of the diaper rash creams out there. Vaseline would clear up her rash within 24 hours. I think it works great and it is not expensive like a lot of the creams out there. Hope your daughter feels better soon.

If you are still using baby wipes, you should stop using them at least until the rash is cleared. Use a wet washcloth instead. My son had terrible diaper rash when he was 2 months old, so bad in fact that even a wet washcloth would be too harsh on his bottom. So what I did was to take him over to the bathroom sink and rinse his bottom with warm water and mild soap (Aquaphor mild wash). Doing this helped clear up his rash in a couple of days. I also let him go diaperless whenever I could until the rash cleared up. It is a lot of extra work, but it was worth it.

The best tip that I could give is...let the rash air dry. Leave the diaper off for a few hours even if she potties again. Just lay an old receiving blanket or something to catch the potty. Change it as soon as it gets soiled. In a few days, it should get better.

C. Please run and get some Boudreaux's butt paste. It is pricey but got rid of my son's bleeding diaper rash in 24hrs flat! It is worth it!!!!!!

Don't fret my son has been on & off antibiotics since he was about 3m old (I have an older child in school - a walking germ factory) & he had the same problem, my pediatrician told me to use equal amounts of AQUAPHOR & CORTAZONE OINMENT, mix into a paste & put it on the baby's bottom every other diaper change but especially after a BM. I also slathered the baby diaper with VASELINE so there was no chafing & the diaper stayed moist & kept the urine & poop away from the skin. You'll notice a difference & the baby will feel better.

Every time my daughters were on antibiotics (especially Augmentin) they would get diaper rashes that were so bad they would bleed. One Dr. recommended using Pepto Bismol mixed with the diaper cream because it neutralized the acidity. Another time they were able to prescribe a medicated ointment which also helped. The best solution, however was changing the type of antibiotic prescribed when my little darlings got ear infectons! (Which was every time they had runny noses!) You may want to discuss this option with your pediatrician for next time! Good Luck!

As a mom and a preschool teacher, I have seen this numerous times. Starts off as a cold, then ear infection, they come back to school seeming to be better then a few days later relapse. Its the horrible germ cycle.

First, its probably being passed around from kid to kid at the daycare. Second make sure your daycare workers are keeping toys and play areas sanitized all day and at closing every night.

Its one of those things that goes with the territory of babies being in daycare. We tell all our parents to save there sick/vacation time at work for these long winter months. We send sick babies home all the time because they put EVERYTHING in there mouths, the germs just constantly are passed around.

Just stick it out. Make your baby as comfortable as possible and try letting her air out without a diaper for an hour or so a day. If she has an accident on the floor it can be cleaned up but it might help with her rash.

Some babies are just prone to sicknesses more then others.

When my son had really bad diaper rash at 6 weeks (now 17 months) he recommended giving him a bath in baking soda and when we changed his diapers to use a mix of baking soda and water and to wash him off (and to not use wipes) The baking soda dried up the rash so quickly we immediatly do this when ever we see a rash forming now and we have no more problems like that.

Try mixing Lotrimin ointment and desitan together and put it on the area to see if that works. It worked for my son.

Does the daycare disinfect the facility. I own and operate my daycare/preschool and the children haven't been sick. I also clean all handles especially in the bathroom.
Do you live in Pompton Lakes or near, the children and parents love my school. Would you want to switch daycares? Disinfecting is very important and it helps kids not get sick.

Stop using baby wipes. Use a warm washcloth to cleanse when you change her diaper. DRY WELL. If you dont dry it well and then you put on diaper rash ointment it will lock in the moisture and make matters worse.
I use TONS of aquafor. If its sore and she doesnt like you to rub it on, you can slather it in her clean diaper and then 'smooosh' it around once the diaper is on. Its a little more wasteful, but its a little easier on your baby. AND, I always give a dose of Tylenol for inflammation and soreness. ESPECIALLY AT BEDTIME! :)
AND, let her go bottomless whenever possible. Without any ointment on her bottom. The air works wonders. If you have a good absorbent pee-pee pad (mattress pad) you can let her nap bottomless. It may be a little more laundry, but it will help the healing process.

Oh the joys of the daycare germs. I went through this with both my kids too when starting out in daycare around 5 months+. As for the diaper rash, I have always had luck with plain A&D ointment, cheaper and better than most diaper rash ointments. As for the ear infections, ask your doctor about the drops for antibiotic rather than oral. It dries out the moisture in the ear and clears the infection, without ever having to hit her stomach, so you can avoid the diaper fun. I actually found it worked better, but the pediatricians office never even recommended it. I only found out about it when we hit the ear, nose and throat doctor after about infection #6.
