My daughter did Athena. We took a white sheet and wrapped that (pretty much Toga style) cut her a sword put of cardboard then covered it with tinfoil. I believe we did something for a headpeice.
It was easy and mythical. :-)
Okay Folks,
My daughter's third grade teacher has thrown us a whammy and written that the entire 3rd grade's costumes have to have a special tie-in for their Fall party. My almost 9 year old daughter needs to think of a literary character to dress up as. One that's a myth, legend, fairy tale, folktale or fable. So no, now she can't dress as the hippie she wanted to.
Problem is, she's 9. She has decided she hates princesses. Most of the suggested books the teacher sent home are quite obviously the pinky sparkly princesses and my daughter isn't having any of that. Beauty and the Beast, Goldilocks, Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, the Little Match Girl. etc. She's nixed them all.
Any ideas on an awesome girl-oriented costume that she can get in to? Keep in mind, I will most likely be making this outfit.
Thanks for any suggestions folks. I really appreciate it.
ETA. It has to be a myth, legend, fairy tale, or fable.

Pocahontas-although she was a real person many myths and legends have been written about her, so she should qualify as a literary character in myth and legend.
Medusa
An Elf
A Fairy
How about going mythological? Isis, Medusa, Artemis, a Valkyrie, Corn Maiden, a Japanese kitsune spirit, Demeter, one of the Fates, Brigid... none of these are princessy, and all of them are definitely female.
<grin>. Have her check out THIS list
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_women_warriors_in_fo...
Women warriors in folklore
______
There's also the warrior goddesses.... Sehkmet the lioness Egyptian goddess of war springs to mind. If she wants to be all in gold and get to growl at people, no better option!
_____
All of the above, even if real historical people or pantheons, have myths, legends, and fables surrounding their exploits.
How about a Greek goddess?
I also thought of warrior queen Maeve.
Hermione Granger.
:)
I say, find a way to make the hippie costume work (even if you need to find a book to have her take with her on the day of the event). Here are a few ideas to utilize a character or two from (and still be kid friendly)...
http://www.amazon.com/My-Hippie-Grandmother-Reeve-Lindber...
http://www.amazon.com/Max-Said-Yes-Woodstock-Story/dp/061...
http://www.amazon.com/Would-Have-Gone-To-Woodstock/dp/143...
Since these books are fiction...they are all mythical or fables in a very loose sense of the word. The one is based on the farmer that had Woodstock on his property so his sisters would be legends too right?
If that doesn't work...how about Arietty from the Borrowers?
Artemis, goddess of the hunt
Athena's owl
find a children's book with a hippie in it, or she can write her own book and carry it around during the party
Brigid of the Celtic people
Japan's Sun Goddess
the sirens
Babe, the Blue Ox
Johnny Appleseed
Casey at the Bat
Ichabod Crane
Headless Horse(wo)man
Puss 'n Boots
Lady Murasaki, author of the Tales of Genji
Mulan
You are right. This is a tough assignment if the child does not want to be a princess but does want to be female. I hope she finds something she likes. And let her be a hippie to go trick or treating.
My daughter did the Greek goddess at that age and it was very cute without being sparkly (she chose the blue one vs the pink one). If she really doesn't want to be girly get that Medusa foam wig that Target has right now!
The Bride of Frankenstein---definitely NOT a princess!
Does she have to be a girl character? She could be Robin Hood or Peter Pan. Or she could be a villain, like Captain Hook or the Evil Queen from Snow White. She doesn't have to do anything frilly and girly if that's not what she's into.
If something like Alice in Wonderland is allowed, there's the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit.
why does she 'have' to be a girl?
i'd go with grendel, or the Wolf, or king arthur. if she WANTS to be a girl, she could be an amazon, or the hansel and gretel witch (if parents squawk that it's halloweeny you just smile and point out her literary origins) or an Ugly Stepsister or the bad fairy from sleeping beauty or babe's big blue ox.

What does she like? Brainstorm with her.
She could be a pirate from Peter Pan. Figure out what her favorite book characters are and adapt then for her in a non girly way.
What about a Greek goddess? Medusa! You can braid pipe cleaners in her hair. They won't stand up too high, but they will bend and stay.
They are usually very sexy, but when we do character for figure skating, I change the top to cover up.
ok changing my answers lol. I didn't see the part about they had to be fictional.
so here are some more
lois lane side kick to superman
hermioni granger
ginny weasly
mary poppins
the tooth fairy
malificant
dracula
loch ness monster
big foot
tooth fairy
sandman
easter bunny
santa clause
jack frost
Sally Ride first female astronaut
Effie Hobby first woman to vote
Amelia Earhart one of the first female pilots
Sacajawea indian woman she lead lewis and clark on their expedition
Marie Curie one of the first women scientists she won 2 nobel prizes
Rosa Parks began the first civil rights movement
Calamity Jane american fronteirswoman and scout
Clara Barton started the red cross in the united states
Juliette Gordon Low (created girlscouts)
mother theresa created a home for the dying in india
the link below is for 100 important women in history you might find others on there that would work also.
If she wants to be a hippie, all she has to do is write a story about a hippie (myth, legend, etc) - then, she can dress up as the hippie from her own story!!
Could be a cute way to do what she wants to do.
What stores does she like? Draw from that, if you can. Could she be a dragon?

Some ideas that caught my eye.
My daughter is going to be Katara from the Avatar cartoon. How about Medusa, Herimone, Pippi Longstocking, Greek Goddess, Cleopatra, The Paperbag Princess (from Robert Munsch's book), Igraine the Great (a female knight), Annie Oakley (without the gun), Mulan (the warrior, not the princess), Artemis the Hunter, Anne Bonny (a pirate), Joan of Arc, Athena Goddess of Wisdom.
Look at the website A Mighty Girl. They have a whole section on costume ideas. You could also browse their book section for ideas.
She could always dress as a male character, or an animal character, like a fire breathing dragon, or Puss In Boots, or she could be a witch, a troll or an ogre if she likes the scary stuff.
Sounds like a fun excuse to go to the library and check out some books!
From recent Disney movies, my first thoughts on non-princessy, princesses were Brave, Tangled and the Princess and the Frog. Those princess were strong and independent and were not looking to be rescued.
If she likes Harry Potter at all, Hermione and Ginny (well, the Ginny from the books, not the movies) would be excellent choices. Both are praised often for their own abilities as witches and, while they did draw the attention of the boys, both were strong individuals. Harry often mentions that how attracted he is to Ginny because of her boldness.
What movies/books/stories is she into?
ETA - What about Princess Leia or Padme Amidala from Star Wars. Those girls are not week and can kick butt!
Just read some of the other responses. From your post it sounded like the teacher restricted them to fictional characters. Is she allowed to be a historical figure?
Go to Google, click on images and plug in your categories. You will have so much to choose from it will make your head spin. She's sure to find something she likes .
What about Nokomis from Song of Hiawatha? You could totally have a white and blue hippie-like outfit for that one!
I decide Cleopatra or Amelia Earhart
I like Medusa. Get little rubber snakes and pin them in her hair! Then wear a Greek toga type outfit.
May go to the library and look at some different books for ideas. I think a fun one might be to be the witch from Hansel and Gretel, instead of Gretel. She could even have a basket of candy. Or the witch from Snow white with her apples.
A girl could be a boy character. How about Peter Pan or Wee Willy Winky etc.
Oops sorry I missed the part about her wanting to be a girl😊
Can it be a literal translation of a mythical creature. She can still be a hippie with an oversized shoe on one foot. (Big foot dressed as a hippie)
Crow mask with a pitcher
Mouse with chewed up net (Lion and the mouse)
Gretel
Little Red Riding Hood. She can make it cool with pants and shirt. And then a cool red cape. So really the pants and shirt can still be hippish.
