Lots of great advice here, G..
I would encourage you to make a list of all the things you'd want from a job so you can really decide what YOU want. For instance, how much extra income do you need to bring into the house. Figure out the realistic amount that would make an impact and be worth your time. Decide how many hours you can commit to that. Then figure out if you could bring that income in if you had to pay childcare, gas, etc. if you worked outside the home in your field.
I left the corporate world after becoming a mom and have been home for 7 years now. My children are now 5 and 7. I also had strong feelings about raising my own children and finding a way to make it happen so they didn't go into childcare. I have 20 years experience and my degree and I searched for months for a part time job that was flexibile, etc. It just didn't exist. Then I researched several direct selling companies and ended up choosing one that fit for me. Nothing else had the flexibility with the great pay that my business affords me. The result has been a very fulfilling career and a balanced home life. I work from home and am available for my children. I work part time hours and receive full time income. I pay the mortgage, private school tuition for both girls, other house bills and we've been able to travel several times a year on my business. It's a total win-win for me because I'm still growing professionally, contributing financially, and have lots of quality time with my family. I take them to school, pick them up, volunteer at their school, have all summer with them, etc. No worries where they'll go the days they are sick, etc. It's totally awesome!
Running a home based business is definitely a great option for anyone looking for quality of life without sacrificing time spent with those you love. It also brings with it many tax benefits too!! You just have to find what fits best for you and your family. Good luck with your search.
Also, if you'd like to learn more about what I do, please feel free to email me at ____@____.com for more information. I can send you a 10 minute DVD that gives you a real sense of the business and it's culture. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have as a result if you decide you want more info. If you decide to look into direct sales, weigh all the benefits and choose one that you are excited about and can see yourself doing.
Best of luck,
Renee
