We have had great experience with Lowes. BUT really the only we really had a good experience was because the first time we got carpet we ended up with a really GREAT installer. Its luck of the draw with them because it is all contracted out. When we moved unexpectedly and needed new carpet again we were able to request the same installer.

We got Smart strand by Mohawk and it has been wonderful in all of the five clors we chose!

Dont use empire. Do your homework so that you know about 'twist, density, texture'. Good luck!

Carpet and what to consider:

1) stain resistance?
2) carpet padding. How thick? Costs will vary accordingly
3) synthetic or natural fiber???
4) durability
5) Manufacturer warranty? What does it cover??
6) is there a pattern in the carpet or not? If the carpet has a pattern to it... it will require more carpet, in order to 'match' the seams/design in the layout and installation. Thus it will affect the costs.
7) What is the installation costs? Hourly labor? Per square footage?

No matter what store, look at and research and read the Reviews, of the brand of carpet you are considering.

Flor is also a good option. They're carpet tiles you can arrange to form an area rug or lay out to cover an entire room. They're made from recycled materials, emit very few VOCs and don't require glue. Another bonus, you can replace just a tile or two if there's a super stain you can't get out: http://www.flor.com/

If you do go for conventional carpet, ask the company to store it in the warehouse to air it out for a couple of days before you have it installed. After it's installed and for at least three days, open your windows to let the fumes disperse. They're pretty toxic.

we used home depot a few years back when we were moving - the carpet was nice, but my husband got into it with the installer. He asked him to install a certain way around a bar area, and the installer told my husband "I"m the installer I think I can figure it out" haha my husband almost told him I'm the homeowner and I'm paying for this get the hell out of my house. But he bit his tongue and it all turned out OK in the end. I see you are in CA but here in KS we have Nebraska Furniture Mart and they do excellent work, maybe there is a similar place in CA good luck to you!!

Depending on where you live, we went to S&G Carpets in San Jose on Almaden. We priced Lowe's and Home Depot, and S&G had a no sales tax special and after installation was included, we got a better quality carpet for less at S&G. Both Home Depot and Lowe's had cheaper, but they were not as good and the padding was not as thick. The guy that came to install was really nice, prompt and fast, which was important to me since I had to have my 2 toddlers out of the house during the process (both bedrooms were being done). Anyhow, we were happy with S&G and plan on using them again for 1 other room. Good luck!

Go to Lowe's. My husband's part-time job is there. :-)

We don't have carpeting because it promotes mold growth and dust collection. I have some sensitive contact allergies so we just have area rugs that are easy to clean and "beat" outside as needed. I can wash them easily too or throw them away and replace them without a second thought.

I like having hard wood floors throughout the house. It looks so much cleaner and shinier.

All I can say is that whatever you find at Home Depot you can probably find somewhere else for a LOT less money.
