Opinions on Best Hospitals in DFW to Have a Baby

Hi Moms,

I had my first baby at Dallas Presby. I'm starting to plan my next pregnancy and am thinking about switching ob/gyns and hospitals. I'd love to hear about where you delivered and what you thought. I'm especially interested in hospitals that are fairly accessible from 75 (Dallas, Plano, Richardson, Allen) but would love to hear about any DFW hospital. How were the nurses? Did they take good care of your baby and you? Do they encourage rooming in? Were the rooms nice and comfortable? Were their any little extras, like a celebration dinner?

Here's my review of Dallas Presby: My daughter was born in March of 2009. The labor and delivery suite was very nice and comfortable, with a large tub for labor. However, the room that I stayed for the rest of the stay was old and a bit shabby, and my husband said that the bed for him was the most uncomfortable bed that he ever tried to sleep on. They encouraged rooming in, but they did have a separate nursery. One nurse looked after me and one nurse looked after the baby. Some of the nurses were great, were really on top of my pain meds, and were really helpful and caring. Some of the other nurses were borderline rude and I had to ask for my pain pills, which should have been coming very 4 - 6 hours per doctor's orders. The lactation consultant was amazing and I don't think I could have managed breastfeeding without her extra help. I do know that the hospital recently refurbished the rooms and they're a lot nicer. One thing that I didn't like was that after we were wheeled upstairs a few hours after the birth, they took my daughter to the nursery for her check up, first bath and other things. I know that some hospitals now do that in the room with the mom, which I would like. Overall I was reasonably happy with the experience, but feel that there was room for improvement with the comfort of the rooms and the friendliness of some of the nurses.

What can I do next?

E.,

I delivered at presby in April of '09 and had a very similar experience. My labor and delivery nurse was awesome. She was an advocate for me when I didn't know what to ask for. I am so thankful that she was there.

However, I was very unhappy with how they handled the post delivery. My son's cord was wrapped around his neck and he did not pink up right away. They took him to get a NICU evaluation after quickly showing him to me. I was OK with that because I more than anyone wanted to make sure he had all of the medical attention he needed. It was almost five hours before they brought him back to me. I later found out that he was in the NICU for about 30 mins and then instead of brining him to me they took him to the regular nursery for his first bath etc. I was in shock, scared, and accepted when my nurse (at the time I didn't realize that she didn't really know what was happening with my baby) said that he was still in the nicu and that I could go see him with she heard from them (I kept calling the nursing station to ask about my baby so I think they were annoyed with me). I will know better for next time but as a new mom I expected the priority to be to get mom and baby together and apparently that was not the case. The right hand did not know what the left was doing which I think was a communication error on the part of the delivery, NICU, my, and my son's nurses.

Overall, I have a good experience but I wanted to share my story just in case someone finds themselves in a similar situation.

Congrats on expanding your family!

It may be a little further from you, but I highly recommend Baylor Frisco. I live in Richardson but thought it was worth the drive. They have a celebration dinner the night before discharge of steak/lobster. The room was very comfortable, it was almost like staying in a hotel (with a hospital vibe). The recovery room could stand to be a bit bigger, but it wasn't an issue for us as we never had more than 3-4 people in there at a time. I loved all the nurses I had, I didn't want the pain meds but they offered it to me when they came in to check on me. The breast feeding consultant stopped by once a day. I had taken the breastfeeding class there before delivery and wasn't having issues, but I believe that if you are struggling they will offer more visits. They don't have tubs there.

I LOVE my ob/gyn and therefore put up with the hospital. I see Dr Mark Godat at Medical City. (His dad delivered my husband and his siblings, and I hear Dr Dad Godat was incredible too.) The delivery room was pretty standard, but no tub in the room. The delivery nurses were great and put up with a ton of questions and were gentle when they needed to be and drill sergeants when the time came. Since I gave birth at 2am, I didn't want to room-in, so I don't know their policy on that. The maternity nurses were great and stayed on top of my medication, but the rooms were pretty simple. The lactation consultant came without me asking, and answered questions I didn't know I had. I know 3 years ago, they took my daughter to the nursery to do all the tests, but again, at 2am, that didn't bother me... I just needed some rest. Having said all that, I'm trying for #2, and am sticking with Dr Godat even though he isn't on my insurance anymore. I would follow him to Baylor even though I hate navigating through downtown, and didn't like anything about the hospital when I visited friends there.

Baylor Dallas. I had two kids there and my most recent was Dec 09'. The delivery rooms are very nice and you can easily fit a few people in there. The rooms themselves were recently updated and are real comfortable. They do have a place for the babies to be checked out in the room vs. having to go to the nursery. My husband stayed with and thought it was a good stay. The lactation nurses go way out of there way to help. I loved them and esp'ly loved the nurses. Incredibly sincere, helpful and knowledgeable people. The food was also good. I never had to ask someone to pick something up for me. Also, if you're interested in a mommy and me class post baby the instructor is awesome. Melissa is a great person and someone that just feels like a quick friend. The topics are really good also. My OB is Dr. Sandra Brothers. She's great. Her partner, Dr. Crochet, is really nice as well.

I love Plano Medical Center. The nurses are super nice. The lactation consultant came everyday and answered all questions you had with a smile. I've had 2 babies there and had different nurses each time but they were all kind. The rooms are nice and a decent size, not too small and cramped. There is a pull out bed for the hubby to sleep on. But it's definitely not what you are used to at home. There are restaurants, gas stations, and a walmart within a 2 block radius of the hospital incase you need to get anything the hospital can't help with. A lullaby plays throughout the floor everytime a baby is born. And I think you get a copy of the newspaper that day so you can know show your baby what happened that same day baby was born. Room service was the best. I ordered my meals several times a day and the food was very good quality. My OB and Pede are also officed in the same parking lot so they have a good working relationship with the hospital. They do take baby away for bathing, testing, and feeding but will leave baby with you as long as you want. My OB is Dr. Melinda Spooner at West Plano OBGYN Specialists, ###-###-####. My Pede is Dr. William Stanton at Pediatric Place ###-###-####. Both have wonderful bedside manners and will listen and answer all questions and concerns you have honestly. All can be looked up on the web. Good Luck.
