Ovulation and Being Sick

Recently, my husband and I finally decided we're ready to have our first baby, and I bought myself an ovulation kit. Around day 11, I started getting sick. And sicker. It's now day 18, and I never did get an ovulation smiley face. My husband and I, being troopers, went ahead and had sex quite a bit from day 11-16 (until I got too sick to participate). Now I've been diagnosed with bronchitis, and am on heavy meds.

Do you think that being so sick could have delayed ovulation? or maybe I'm just not going to ovulate this month? Additionally, the doctor put me on a z-pak and 5 days of steroids to cure things....

Am I just prolly screwed this month? :/

For my, any kind of illness or even stress will delay or prevent ovulation. I missed my period for 3 months before I conceived our first child. The doctor was totally puzzled at first about the due date - it changed from June to September.

Mother nature wants you to be in optimal condition to grow a baby.

Relax and wait. Soon the conditions will be just right :)

I don't trust the kits. I took one when we tried with my son. I didn't get a positive. Guess what, I got pregnant. Most of the time I can figure it out now by changes in my body and sometimes there will be slight spotting during ovulation. And ovulation can occur anywhere between days 9-13 depending on your cycle. You could have already ovulated when you took the test. The babycenter website has a good ovulation calculator. If you plug in your dates, it will give you a 5 day window. Good luck.

Ovulation kits are helpful, but depending on the time of day that you use them, you could miss the window. I found that just watching for signs like cervical mucus worked better. The 14 day rule doesn't apply to everyone. I have 2 children and both were conceived on day 20. There is a great book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" that is worth buying. You will be amazed at how much we don't know about how our bodies work!

As one person said, not everyone ovulates at the same time. I took about 4 months of watching my ovulation before I actually tried to conceive - just to figure out my system. I ended up ovulating regularly on days 18/19. So, you may not have ovulated when you thought you were supposed to, but you could still ovulate. Now, on the flip side of that, I used a fertility doctor with both of my kids. The first one was conceived on day 19, but the 2nd fertility doctor (we moved to a new state) did NOT like conception on day 19. He forced conception on day 15 with drugs (which was fine with me because the result was still a baby). So, if you are ovulating that late, you might consider talking to a specialist about it. Our doctor indicated that an egg that matured that late was already "old" and wasn't a good recepticle for a baby (even though my son is fabulous!).

Also, be sure to use the stick first thing when you get up in the morning and be consistent about using it at the same time every day.

Good luck!

I second the recommendation for "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" It is written by Toni Weschler. However in answer to your question yes being sick can most defiantly delay ovulation.

Yes the stress on your body could delay ovulation. You're on heavy meds too, I'd wait till next month and try again. Best of luck.
